Timelapse of The Other Side of Las Vegas with my Music

Hey everyone,

Check out this beautiful time-lapse video of "The Other Side" of Las Vegas by photographer Yevgeniy Zakharkin. He made the video to a piece of music I've been working on that will eventually make its way (in an edited version) onto my next album.

Enjoy the images and enjoy the music and we'd love to hear how you like it!

Really nice music! Maybe someday in the far future I will learn how to make crisp and clean and professional sounding mixes like this...

Thank you! I'll let you in on one little secret... I work 100% in Sonar. Have since I first started. The music doesn't leave Sonar until it's completely done. I know plenty of people jump between programs, especially when it comes to mixing and mastering, but nowadays, especially with the X versions of Sonar, I don't think there's really any reason to anymore.

Hi polarbear. Good to know. I am just slowly getting familiar with some of the features in Sonar X1. Do you think the ProChannel tools are worth delving into, or can about the same be done with other plugins that come with Sonar? If the ProChannel tools do have advantages, briefly, what might some of those advantages be?

You know what, I'm new to the ProChannel, but I'm loving it. Up until recently I did just use other plugins, but now I use a mix of both. ProChannel is great for just quickly messing with things, and then when I really need to dig in, I'll add a specific plugin to a track. But yea, definitely its worth getting into. Especially for little tweaks.

    Hei David,
Really enjoyed that - excellent soundtrack.  The arrangement was not overly complex in a very good way - just the right balance everywhere.   Are you using soft synths for this ..?   Curious to know, as I am also currently working on a similar project at the moment, I have film including some time-stretch like yours, and I add the music to it  - how did you work, for example did you get the film first, then do the music, or the music came first added to the film?  And what export setting did you use, is 44000 / 24 bit enough for this kind of thing, or something more?

    Hey thanks so much.

It is all soft synth actually. I sometimes incorporate some real guitar or a percussion thing here and there, but yea this is all soft synth... A lot of Omnisphere... and a bunch of others.

I've been composing for a lot of things lately, and normally I do get the film and compose to it, but this case was different. I was collaborating with Yevgeniy on a few other projects and he asked me to make a song in advance that he could build his time-lapse around. So I just kinda made it with a bunch of change ups and sections so he'd have some spots to work with to build it around.

As for export settings, it's actually just 44/16bit.

    Thanks for the feedback David.
Thought I recognised Omnisphere in there (I use it a lot too ;-)) ... the piano in there, is that also Omnipshere?   There are quite weird piano sounds in Omnisphere, I wasn't sure if yours was from there ... it was anyway nice, your piano sound.

To be honest... I don't remember haha. I'd take a guess that they're either from Omni or Nexus2. And they could be from one of the many expansion packs out there for either one of them. I tend to buy a lot of expansion packs (I like to mess around with sounds too... but I find having an endless sea of presets always helps me get something going).

I have listen to it without watching the video and the song stands out on its own - a very nice piece of music - I do like the piano all over it. I suppose that the video enhanced the picture. 5 stars out of 5 from here.

Thank you :-) I'm hoping to revise the song a little bit and cut it down to a more standard length for a track on my next album... Whenever that happens to happen haha.

The piece works very well with the vid. There are places where the dynamics hit the scene changes and that's cool.

    Thanks! Glad you liked it.

And to scottytunes, I think if I was to release the song as a standalone track I'd definitely shorten it. I have a roughly 3 and a half minute version I'm playing around with that I think is kinda perfect length wise, but for the sake of the timelapse I had to stretch it out longer.

The video kept blacking out on me so I just listened.   Nice!   As was mentioned above it's a fairly simple tune but very clear and has space.   The only thing I found is that the snare jumped out a bit too much at times against the more ambient sections.   But other than that minor point I think it worked well.

That's weird that it was blacking out... Maybe a bad connection or something? But glad you dug it. It's not the most complex track in the world but I think it's pretty and it sounds great when driving in my car so that makes me happy haha :-)
