To Noel: Is there going to be an X1c update?

Hi Noel,

As I am working through X1b it's apparent that the Cakewalk team has definitely provided alot of fixes on alot of issues through this update.  I think it is reasonable (or sensible) to conclude that with limited amount of time and resources Cakewalk couldn't address every bug or potential issue.

Once things settle down with the X1b update and users have documented enough common past and present bugs they have uncovered, would we see a new update in the near future on things that couldn't be addressed or recently discovered (and prior to any new annual release).

What kept me positive about X1 has been Cakewalk up front communications that you were working to address X1 issues and kept everyone posted on the status of the update (weekly updates are a good thing, even if there is no update!)

We can speculate all we want in the forum (and we do), but getting an idea of how X1 is progressing and improving from the CIO can go a looooong way in assuring X1 users Cakewalks commitment that X1 is going to continously be better than the update before.

Thanks!

You have asked the 64 million dollar question  that we would all like to know.

I think it would be very good of Cakewalk to openly commit to further updates to X1.

It would certainly make me more confident that Cakewalk are determined to get X1 right.

I think Noel should answer this thread. Cakewalk could definitely benefit by being really upfront with regards this version of Sonar. Just my two cents.

I would hope they plan on keeping X1 around for a while. but it also could well be just a "break in" daw for whats to come.   if it's truely better then we will **** and moan like this time  and relearn everything again. heh   CW knows it's on top for now, but if they dont continue to push, they are gona be in trouble next year or two if/when PT goes 64 bit.
but by then maybe they will have the 128bit engine running .   ;)

Phenom Quad core,  8gb ram, 3.5tb of Fine Music Storage Vault Under Armed Guard w/ UAV support (air-hog chopper), set of MA-15D, Delta 10-10 pci w/interface, m-box 3 pro, projectmix I/O, Metal Pop Filters, Two SKB cases Full of Suck Removal Buttons, Cedar Walls, Stripper Pole (helps with mastering & block priceing) more stuff i'm to lazy to add. ;)
P.S. good Memory foam is freakin awesome.

Don't quote me but it was sort of hinted there would be another update in a post from one of the CW staff, Brandon I think.

He didn't actually say there would be but it was along the lines of something may not be fixed in X1b but maybe the next patch (or something like that IIRC) - I'll go mad searching for the post now.

The one thing I would think will help them to decide if a X1c is done is how many bugs (deemed important to fix in their eyes) come through based on the release of X1b.

Over the last few versions, there have been about three release (look at 8.5.3 for example) before they really started to focus on the next release.  So the chances are there that one more release off of X1 is possible.

S8.5.3 was the fourth S8.5 release. About 1 per month.

30+ versions of sonar since S1.

Good thing not everything in SX is new.

bottom line here: it was a tactical decision to create a new product and release it when they did.

I'm sure they didn't plan to have so many bugs, but it was a tactical decision to not have a public beta or even a "closed" beta group from our large user community, and a tactical decision to not have one now.

It is also a tactical decision to not address the bigger picture. I can see what the potential marketing impact would be, but I'd man up and say:

"We really messed up on this one. We released a product before it was properly tested and made mission-critical solid. We've disappointed our customer base. We want to make amends, so we're offering those who bought X1 our assurance that we will make X1 right, the way you expect, the way you've come to love and trust our products for years. And we're setting up a new beta program that all of you are invited to join."

I agree, dlion. I can only assume that their "tactical decision" was to appeal to a broader market at the expense of losing their long time loyal customer base. I know I'm about ready to wander from the fold, and I've been w/ cakewalk for 16 years. I think if they had plans of a 1Xc, they would be all over announcing it. I'm not saying it won't happen, but it seems like they are not willing to commit to it just yet.

Agreed, an X1c release that finished fixing any bugs, and made everything rock solid is crucial.

Plus if they have time they could fix the niggles that people have like being able to hide layers, or the automation problems.

Wouldn't that be nice...especially given that some of the bugs fixed in X1 also apply to 8.5 and could be provided to 8.5 users with almost zero effort on CW's part since they're in files other than SONAR's main executable. I'm talking about the V-Vocal crash-prevention fix and the memory leak fix in the Sonitus Delay, but there may be others.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

1A and IB got the low-hanging fruit.
I suspect the big list will grow over the next month.

I'd be looking for a 1C and 1D prior to the end of the year.
1C to debug the next round and 1D to debug and add features such as color control  a nd other customization.
Or perhaps 1D adds 64-b it versions of effects.

    Or... something...

Just keep tweaking until the bug list has dwindled to the truly minor stuff.

if a product is not stable, how can you release a demo version? which bugs will it contain?

brandon, get real. we know you guys are working to fix X1 and that there are going to be c, d, however many until...?

that's what we want to know, until you get it right (btw: at our expense, on our dime for fault-tolerant product we deserve and paid for but didn't get) or until you get bored or whatever and decide it's time to abandon X1 altogether "because the new grizzer makes X1 obsolete. and all X1 users can pre-pay now to get a looks good, barely functional... "

wtf? deja vu all over again... we have all been here before, and I for one am disappointed in the way CW has provided little more than lip service to this loyal user community. i would have waited until june for a rock-solid product. now, my faith that by june i'll have that is at an all-time low because of CW's failure to say, "we're sorry, X1 still has issues. we'll fix it and make it right."

I guess that's too much to ask after all these years...

I am really hoping that Cakewalk plans for and issues an X1c update.  The disaster of X1's release followed by a rapidly issuing X1a means that the users (most of whom are quite loyal) are going to find STRs - we're the huge test base for them.  It is well within the rights of the users to expect that the product works as claimed by the manufacturer (but probably unfair of us to expect 99.99% functionality).  I am not talking enhancements, I am talking fixing that which should be functioning correctly.... I loaded X1 on my machine but quickly pulled it off.... way to buggy, even at the X1a level.

We should probably start compiling a solid list of X1b STRs.  I'll jump in once my new machine is up and running.

    Cheers All!
