To upgrade or not to...
Hi.. I have been using Sonar 8 producer edition ( 8 not 8.5) and have recently bought Roland's Octa Capture. I am wondering if now is the right time to upgrade to to Sonar X1 producer editon or should I just wait for X2? Hope someone can advise. Thanks...

How new is your computer? The best way to do it is to also update your computer. Get more ram if you can. And a better video card. And a bigger display. And a new OS (if you don't have Win7 64bit). You might just want to get a new computer. And then, YES UPGRADE TO X1 you will love it! I do. Will never go back to 8.5

Hi A1MixMan.. Thanks for the lightning quick response. Infact I just built my new PC. It's a Core i7 machine that runs on Win 7 Ultimate edition (64 bit). A Radeon video card and I have installed 8GB of RAM in the machine. Got myseld an LED monitor (was using a CRT all these years). That's was why I was thinking of getting X1, but was a little concerned with the reports bugs in X1....

1. In my opinion, X1 is a completely new DAW. You can buy it at an 'upgrade' price, but I don't really consider it an upgrade because it's totally different than anything Cakewalk has previously released. 2. You'll have to relearn almost everything you know how to do in 8.0. 3. 8.0 is no longer supported (IOW no more critical updates or patches.). 4. There seems to be some backward compatibility problems with X1 for some folks so if you do decide to upgrade, keep 8.0 on your system so you can run both. I'm using X1 exclusively now and I'm very happy with it. I still have 8.5 on my system, but I haven't used it in quite some time. If you have a solid system and sound card you should be fine ... but, even if 8.0 is running flawlessly on your system, you should not expect X1 to do the same. It takes some tweaking sometimes, while some folks have had no problems at all (that they'll admit to). Make sure you get all the patches and Quickfixes and you should be good to go.

You will love it. The only thing I would recommend is have two 23" or larger displays. Make working in X1 awesome. BUT, X1 is designed nicely to work well a one single large display as well. I say go for it. The sooner you learn X1, the sooner you will be loving it! Go get the Groove3.com X1 vids and start learning right now. For me the hardest part was just learning where they put everything. Unlearning bad habits really. X1 is sweet. And I'm still on X1a. We just finished a killer sounding song with X1. It really sounds fantastic and X1 helped do that in record time. I'm sure digging it. Can't wait to upgrade to X1b and the quickfixes. Damn, that sounds like the new band they started at the Cakewalk X1 Release Party. "...And now, here is X1b and the QuickFixes!!!" Loud applause from the back developers table...

Hi... Thanks guys for the messages. I am very much tempted to get it. I just got off the phone with the local dealer for Roland/Cakewalk. I was told that they don't have the software in hand and may have to get it from the Roland head office in a neighboring country. I remember when I got my Producer 8 editon from them, I had to wait over a month to get it. If I were to place an order with my local dealer for X1 now and I wait for a month or two before I get the product, that will be June or July. If X2 were to be released at the end of this year (I am assuming cos if I am not wrong, X1 was released at the end of 2010) than that would leave me with only a few months to play with X1 before getting X2. Does anyone have any idea if X2 is around the corner? Also is there a way I can bypass my local dealer and get the product directly from Cakewalk? Hope someone can advise. Thanks.

I'm very efficient with 8.5 and they haven't added anything of value for me. I certainly don't need another channel strip. It seems to me that Cakewalk now sees their target market as 1st time users and hobbyists. They lowered the price and have now dumbed it down by taking way choice and forcing everyone to work the same way.

I just upgraded from 8.5 that I was happy with and knew very well. I decided to try the upgrade after fresh installing Windows 7 (64 bit) from Vista (64 bit), and though there is some learng to do I am happy to of made the switch to X1,some nice features like the Pro strip and Smart tools are very good, and I like the new look of the GUI.

Glisando- buy the upgrade thru the online cakewalk store. If you have a slow connection (it's a massive download) buy the disks as well. They arrive anywhere in about 7-10 days. X1 is a crap name for a great daw

Thanks guys.. In the page meant for online purchases, I see different prices quoted for the upgrades, depending on which version one is upgrading from. I have 2 questions: 1. Does it mean the the upgrade files for let's say, Producer 7 and Producer 8 are different from each other? 2.Does it mean, I must have the old version in the system as I install X1? Thanks

Upgrading from Sonar 8 Producer to X1 Producer costs £129 and it is a fresh install, you do not need your Sonar 8 on the computer.

There is only one product. A full version of which ever SONAR you buy ie Producer, Studio or Essential. the term upgrade only effects the price. It's still the full program that can be installed with previous versions in place as each SOANR version installs to its own folder.

I've had nothing but problems with X1 so far on a new machine; loads of bugs, compatibility issues, stuff not working -- I would not upgrade. Wait another year until the programme may be stable, then consider the upgrade. Right now, it has way too many issues to be used for professional work.

Awe man, there's enough good music out there to compete with, and now I gotta worry about you to? Be sure to get the Groove3.com X1 vids so you won't waste alot of time with the learning curve. Just remember, X1 is a new way of thinking. It makes sense. Just go with the flow. Once you wrap your head around the concept you will instantly see the benefits. The number one thing to learn is exactly how the Smart Tool functions and everything that it can do. I find myself using it about 85% of the time. It's really a very cool tool. X1 is still just the first version. They'll get the kinks worked out soon enough. And don't forget Scott's X1 Power book. Very nice big book. Thanks again Scott!

Hi Folks.... I seem to have some issues with the Dimension 1.2 that came with Sonar 8. When I start a project in Sonar 8 and insert Dimesntion Pro as a softsynth, I am getting a: "Failed to insert soft synth. The synth may not be properly installed." error message. So I re-installed Dimension Pro and I am still having the same problem. I am not sure if 'Sonar Sound Centre'or 'Studio Instrument Drums' that came with Roland Octa Capture are causing these problems. I was intending to settle the Dimension Pro issue before moving on to installing X1 as I can just do an update for Dimension Pro 1.5 later. Hope some one can advise. Thanks. regards glisando
