Touchy?
So there's an interesting thread upstairs relating to an issue with panning and mono/stereo. All is going well until an experienced poster adds a comment that the OP might want to spend some time with the manual. Not unreasonable, and this wasn't a RTFM type rant- in fact he started out 'No offense..'. And wham, OP takes major exception. Now that thread is probably light up and die. People can be so quick to ire... Was thinking of adding "it's safer in the CH", but I know you're already thinking of wind-up responses

Do you really think he was quick to ire? He has one guy pestering him about something that he has imagined is the cause yet isn't actually applicable. There are a few sincere people trying to teach the OP how to help them self... Good job! And then someone throws a signature "I don't really have to read or respond here but I like busting people's chops" post down the rhetoric chute. It's been going on for 5 days... and finally the person points out that the wild assumptions aren't appreciated. That seems fairly reasonable to me. It is surely some small detail in the set up... and it may be awkward that the OP will have to develop some skills specific to learning how to get help here at the forum... but that's where it's at. The situation doesn't seem worthy of gawking. best regards, mike

Lol..... I think his response to daveny5 was harsh but fair..... Whether or not he should be reading the manual it was still a pretty condescending post. No we don't get paid but then again no one forces anyone to respond to posts. If I try and help someone and they don't appear to be taking the advice I just bow out rather than respond as daveny5 has. Hardly friendly is it?

I remember, many years ago, when I was still using S4PE, I created an account to ask some questions. Three people responded. Bitflipper, CJ and DaveNY. CJ and DaveNY replied ... "RTFM" and basically told me to go F off. Bitflipper actually tried to help me. Some people just aren't any good with finding things in manuals, especially with the ****ty way the search function works in Sonar. I don't think there was a PDF available back then. Like I said before ... some people get off on busting balls. But anyway ... the responses to the thread don't surprise me in the least. If I tell someone to RTM, I leave out the F, and if I can find it in the manual myself, I try to post a page number for them. Facing a 1200 + page manual kind of freaks some people out ... myself included.

Although I'm one who does try to RTFM, I usually prefer third-party manuals or training videos/classes. I think it takes someone a little removed from the actual developers (who are just too close to things) to help explain it. I know I've been guilty myself when I try to write things like a user's guide for software I've written. I'm so used to it that I forget to identify things that seem completely self-evident. Sometimes I forget that a few people are just born bass players, ya?

Me and Daveny5 go back a long way. I'm not allowed to use the 'T' word any more, but that particular word describes him perfectly (you could say, to a 't'). Still, him telling someone to RTFM is a vast improvement on his previous modus operandi in the Home Studio forum of insinuating that anyone who didn't know the basics about the software was obviously using a pirated version. In the 'Goodbye' thread upstairs, I was sorely tempted to politely point out to him that AnnieDog was not, as he kept referring to the OP, a female of the opposite sex, but a bloke called Barry Dave's just another of the high-posting, self-aggrandising, pompous, self-important forum dinosaurs that talks a good game but doesn't have a single note of recorded output available for anyone to listen to. What a complete twit.

:-( I probably should have just stayed out of that thread I guess. The tuts are pretty darned good though as far as getting a general idea of where and what things are. Man, it always bums me out seeing negativity on here. Oh well. Peace.

See - the CH really is a much safer place. Steve - David Cameron got away with the T word easily enough. Called myself that only last night after I left my phone on the train!

What a complete twit. Agreed. When I first came around asking silly questions Daveny always had some sort of condescending, snide remark. After one or two of those I just started skipping over his post's. I still do that to this day. Oh, and I would like to give you kudos on using twit instead of what you really want to use. I know that mustn't have been easy for you. Out of respect for you, from now on whenever you use the word twit I will mentally replace it with the original term and meaning. Mike

It's not all in the manual anyway. If you're going to refer to the manual, tell them what page.

You gotta love Papa2004/5. I accused him of being drunk once to which he became severely offended. Reading text can be a bit awkward sometimes and it is difficult to understand exactly what people mean, as in their manner and tone of delivery. As for RTFM! I always though it was offensive to say that because lots of people use the forum to educate themselves through interaction instead of reading in solitary confinement. I remember CJ as someone who responded to one of my first posts as a newbie with RTFM. Found it a bit isolating that some people thought his utterly patronising manner to be useful and friendly. Still, I think the forums are better without the CJ's and the Papas : ) Why some people can't just use a little empathy and go along with a thread topic is beyond me. It seems that some want to belittle others with their alternative perspectives instead of passing a thread by if they cant be of any positive and constructive use. Cheers Rodney

Rodar6 Why some people can't just use a little empathy and go along with a thread topic is beyond me. It seems that some want to belittle others with their alternative perspectives instead of passing a thread by if they cant be of any positive and constructive use. Cheers Rodney There are so many variables. -There are newbs who really don't understand that starting a DAW hobby for the first 2-3 weeks its wisest to concentrate on reading the manual, with the F or without it. They think that being spoonfed is the normal way. And without the slightest exaggeration, this has become almost the habit with the youngsters who are used to finding everything in the net. - There are "dinosaurs" to whom things are so obvious, that they often misunderstand the whole question, because they expect it to be "the same old one". - There are eager manual readers, who twist things far more complicated than what they actually are, and refuse to believe the solution is simple. - Asking and answering the questions there are non-native english speakers (or native ones to whom verbal expression isn't easy) who can lead the conversation to unimaginary paths being plainly, sincerely helpful. - There are overly helpful forumites, who give a thorough answer to even the most basic questions instead of pushing the request maker to help himself, thus feeding the will to be spoonfed. - And everything between those Of course, it would be good to just stay away from the forum for a few weeks or months if you feel you're losing your patience, but that isn't easy to do, either.

I always wonder that if the answers are all to be found in the manuals, then why do we have these forums in the first place? Apart from Bapsi to become famously unfunny.
