It would be very handy if we had more track color variations to choose from.

Are you suggesting a larger display for colors, or more to choose from? If you click other here  you get this

I'm not sure if this is what the OP meant, but I'd like previously used custom colors added to the list of standard color blocks. Like Microsoft/Office apps.

There is SONAR mods , cakewalk forum post . Why cant the person who make the mods, collaborate with Cakewalk and send his theme's to them, he can get some benefits from cakewalk by making theme's. Personally like to have it simple IMO and not having to use other programs to do so having a lot of themes then it is simple to change the look of sonar, it certainly need some variation. It is not just about the " colors " but the texture and shape, like wood, metal, knobs, switches etc it is also important that buttons, etc clearly indicate if it is PRE or POST " understanding of the visual's. " ( If a post button is green, we know it is in post mode, when it is in red then, it is in PRE mode but it is even easier if the text on it change's to PRE, when it is red. ) Appearance is important.., not only for the users, but for new DAW buyers " appearance sell " right ?

I was thinking instead of 12 default colors immediately available to choose from, it would be nice to have maybe a few dozen with more variations to choose from.

There are 12 "factory preset" colors and 16 "user preset" colors. It takes a click to get to the user presets.
After selecting the clip, it's 2 clicks vs. 4 clicks in total to change the color. For those of us who frequently change clip colors, it's a big difference.

IMO, if/when colors are able to be stored in templates the click burden will be substantially reduced. For me anyway ...
