It just dawned on me that it's all probably in Scott Garrigus' Sonar X3 Power book. ***** BTW Scott told me it's on page 76 of Sonar X3 Power

For some reason it will not work for me in the browser nor a Track Icon folder in the desktop. When I drag it to a track I can see the BMP's name, the cross with 4 arrow head and a + sign to the bottom right. But when I release the mouse……….. Nothing! No icon update. The world is against me today... Just spilt my coffee as well.
I have empirical evidence this is true... (Bender told me!) Mosvalve I thought Sonar was able to see JPEG's now for icons. I could have sworn this was a new feature in one of the past updates. I guess not.
SONAR used to do BMP only, but added PNG, not JPEG.
Any idea why JPG wasn't added? Seems odd to me since it is the most used image format.

A one-liner in Sonar's help: If you want to create custom track icons, we recommend that you author them as 96x96 pixel 24-bit bitmaps (.BMP).

I'm going to guess that it's because BMP and PNG support transparent backgrounds and JPG doesn't.

FWIW, if anyone needs a good, free image viewer/editor (for converting JPGs to PNGs, or resizing/cropping to size, for example), give IrfanView a try. I've been using it almost daily for many years. http://www.irfanview.com/

Well first idea I had when I read this-- take pictures of your band mates and/or clients, won't they be impressed when the see their smiling mug beside their vocal track. And yes take a picture of each and every guitar, bass, dobro and jaw harp in your collection. If you're to lazy to take your own pictures of instruments just use google images and enter the name and colour of your guitar. You can then open it in Microsoft Office picture Manager or any editor and resize to 96x96 and then "save as" bitmap.

John Is there a way to show the icons in the browser as images and not text?
No. But if you open the Track Icon folder in the desktop so you can see the images, you can still do the drag and drop into track thang.
I would really love if the Browser did show images. The drag and drop is a handy thing to have too. Good tip indeed.
Altho I agree the icon file names aren't much good for describing what they picture, having images in the browser would be rather awkward imo. 1st, they'd have to create a whole 'nother set of icons for it (thumbnails, etc.). 2nd, they'd be way too small to see. 3rd, they would require more CPU load to display when running Sonar. Improvements to the world of track icons would be: 1. Chang the format from BMP to PNG. 2. Have only 1 (one) icon folder for Sonar instead of one for each version of Sonar. This would free up disk space and reduce CPU load when running Sonar.

Like JohnnyV, I was thinking about this being very handy for opening older projects, that I have yet to finish writing/ arranging, or am rewriting, that would have guitars/basses/keys/baritones/mandos/steels/etc, that I no longer own or have upgraded. I suppose I really should start using the notes option and keep track there (in the bundles/folder)instead of my notebooks. It's more organized and clear. Michael

I find that you should always title a track BEFORE you record it. This seems to stick in the audio folder. Re naming a track after it's recorded does not change the file name of the recording. So I make titles like - Bass 1 Rumble DI- which tells me how I recorded the bass. Vox -AT- JM - tells me I used my AT 2020 and Joe Meek pre amp. So a picture of the singer would help shorten the title.

I do that kind of coded naming, too. The icons seem to make finding "which track" in a pile of them, faster.

No offense Steve but isn't it redundant to use the same color as the track and the same track LABEL as your icon? Good idea though before CAKE added the track color option. All the power to you if this is your workflow (who am I too judge)? I do like the idea of people pictures or real gear pictures but has anyone converted a persons picture to a 24x24 bitmap? How does it look? Jim

Not 24x24, but 96x96 & it looks ok - BTW didn´t Cakewalk increase the maximum recommended size to 128x128 a while back?
