Track Icon Trick
Maybe I'm the only person who didn't know this, but if you navigate to any PNG or BMP picture in the browser and drag it anywhere into a track, it will become the track icon.

I thought Sonar was able to see JPEG's now for icons. I could have sworn this was a new feature in one of the past updates. I guess not.

SONAR used to do BMP only, but added PNG, not JPEG.

Not really, but when I create new track icons, I pass them along to Cakewalk. Many of these have been added since Platinum was introduced. Guess I need to do more...

That's a good one! Though we may clamor for "revolutionary" features, it's often the 1001 small improvement that make day-to-day DAW use more productive.

Good tip! I made a few basic .png icons quickly in Paint. Just solid color backgrounds with Bold type, ie: blue backrounds are all drums, yellow are guitars etc and put them in the template folder. Also some templates for the Aux busses. It adds another quick visual clue especially when it console view.

I know I could just try it, but do images get autoscaled, or do they need to be sized before drag/drop?

Just drag and drop. Of course, if you're trying to squeeze some big rectangular shape into the track icon, it's going to look fairly abstract

No. But if you open the Track Icon folder in the desktop so you can see the images, you can still do the drag and drop into track thang.

Just wanted to explain why I was looking for additional TRACK ICONS. Yes, so when I use a LES Paul Deluxe and a LES PAUL Custom on the same song.... it would be nice to find the track in console view by guitar picture (they are already grouped together) or if one of the PAULs is GOLD and the other WINE RED.... bingo, aid to an old blind man. Also, I have multi vocal tracks, if I like to know which MIC i used in case corrections are needed later... let's say I used a NEUMANN U-87 on one vocal track and a TLM 102 on another track..... not only can I find the vocal tracks but now, the console view would become a detailed track sheet (which eventually would be nice to print out or send to a file for quick archival later (who knows for what). Somebody asks you what mic did you use on the vocals on the main vocal.... do you remember that 3 or 4 years later? Anyway, would be nice to just open up the TRACK SHEET PDF and you could see the icon of a U-87, no? If somebody asks what COMP did you use (that kind of detail) then it would be OPEN the song up and see all the signal chains. Just some thoughts, Jim PS - Craig, thank you for all you do in supporting us.

What I do is try to find my exact instruments on a music store site, like Musician's Friend or Sweetwater. Save the picture, then use it as my track icon to show the actual instrument used.

If you mean the little icon to the right of the track number, those can be changed with something like Duckbar or any resource extractor. They're in the PNG section of TTSRES in earlier versions of Sonar, TungstenTheme in Tungsten (IIRC), and TTSImage for Mercury. I'm not at my computer, so the filenames for the Tungsten and Mercury versions may not be exactly correct. The icons are in the lower numbered resources near the top.
