[Track] KJ4OFL (a vocoder work)

Hey Everyone
I know that I have not posted in a very long time.....Sorry....But I'vebeen meaning too...

Anyway . .. I have spent a lot of time trying to find out how to use a vocoder....and a lot of good people here helped me out so I thought I would post this to let them listen to what I was working on.... Thank you all for helping !!!!

This started out as a Groove on SD 2 and then I found a guitar lick to go with it...finished up with some horns and found a vocal clip to add a little depth....Then for what ever reason I wanted to use a vocoder and that took awhile to learn.....but I did it.....

I had to get my Ham Radio FCC License for work and passed but could not remeber my call sign........so what better way to remember it that listening to it say a million times.....give or take.......so with a call sign of KJ4OFL and using a vocder for the voice I could only imange that this is a song only a robot could sing.......and so it is

Here is the link
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8485721

*******  Due to the compression on Sound click the harmonies in the chorus really do not come out that well which I am very dissapointed in********
If you would like to hear it better then please PM me and I will send you over a better copy

Here are the lyrics for this
Verse 1
Here is where the servant stands
Ready for the day's demands
Be it left, Be it Right
Conquer, Victory do it right
Masters complaint do not I mask
I put my skills to the Task
Never faultier, never fall
My drive gives it's all

Chorus
He made me with his own two hands
With sweat, blood and time he holds
Every part, every piece
Love and patience he released
Made with only one desire
To serve with unconditional fire
Truth and honesty to report
The last day is his to sort

Verse 2
Serve the Master very well
Without a word, I never tell
information I have inside
it's only time I abide
Faster, Faster, round and round
Till I'm tired, then I'm down
My secrets will not come cheap
Sometimes locked down deep

To Chorus

Verse 3
No Flesh No Blood do I have
Metal, wire, rubber and sand
Geodesic eyes of gold
intelligent I am told
Waiting patiently I'll stay on hold
Hard Drive warm, Keyboard cold
Sometimes Master screams oh well
I'm KJ4OFL

I hope you like this crazy thing.

Cliff

    Hi Cliff,

I love that mix.   Very clean and warm R&B sounding.  Vocoder sounds fine in mp3 format on these speakers although I would boost it a bit more.   My only crit it the ending is a bit abrupt.

     Very cool work.

    Rick
    Thanks very much ....
    I appreciate it support......

Maybe it is my computer speakers at home that don't work so well the give me this impression......since the tune is less than 10 mgbits I was able to post it as a 320 bit mp3 (at least that is what I burnt it to) on soune click....but after listening to it I was not happy....maybe I  will pull out my ear buds here at work and have a listen...see what's up...

.I went back and listened to your suggestion and I do have to agree with you about it......maybe doing another chours and ending it there would be a better way.......

    again thanks

Cliff - Yes I do like this 'crazy thing'! Funkadelic! Do you break-dance and do the moonwalk too?? The vocoder sounds fine to my ears and I really like all the backing instumentation on this. Well done buddy.

Your vocoder work sounds great and really gives the track a 70's funk vibe. i liked that synth that panned across, nice touch.

The arrangement is cool and the female vocals are a nice touch.

congrats on getting your ham licence.

thanks for listening to this as well.......

I have to tell you......getting that vocoder to work correctly for me was no easy task......maybe I'm dense or something  but ggeeezzzzz.....
I post here in the software area, I searched out u-tube for help, I searched my CM Magazine collection as well as their web site and tutorials I even worked at trying to get Pentagon 1 to speak properly and I did have "some "success......a couple of weeks ago i ended up with a version that sounded like Darth Vader.......so I put it down but I kept up the thread  in the software area and finally a couple of folks gave me the inside break I was hoping for .......I followed their instructions and here is the result......

So Thank you for the complinment......I do appreciate it...

    Cliff

OH by the way.....the Vocoder i used on this is the Free Tal-Vocoder.....I thought that it sounded pretty good and had my heart set on using is.....you can use it in a traditional manner (using a carrier and a modulator Signal) or you can use just it's own internal Osc. for the carried signal.....

I jsut thought that was cool.....

Ha, what a trip!   I wanted to get a vocorder but Mark said that's what I sound like without one.  A night of favorites for me.  Cliff I like this song best of your offerings.  TOTALLY DIFFERENT!  Wow, what a great arrangement.  Dude, I have to go and listen to some of your others.  I did  not associate this sound with you. HOTTTTTTTTT !!

Too Much Fun .... Sounds great to me ...  Nothing like the call letters WKRP (in Cincinnati ) but I think Venus Flytrap would have played it.

this is excellent...really enjoyed its retro vibe..

    was the vocoder a plug-in?

Ive been trying to get some results out of one but man they are difficult to use for small parts let alone what you've managed here

    super clean mix

    nice one!

Very cool funkadelic tune with some R&B in it. Clean and cool mix, maybe the vocoded vox could have a little more separation though. Great beat/groove and very good work on the brass. Great with the female vox paired with the vocoder they make each other stronger. Oh, I really liked the lyrics as well.

I know you are correct on the vox.......cause I feel the same way.......

this started as a groove with SD one day and then I found the guitar riff and it started from there...

Woman's vox are samples I copied from a Computer Music Disk that I had laying around...I did some hacking on them a little....layered them a little and even mixed a couple of them to gether on purpose to make it sound like a slight mistake....

This was a fun track to make......I am glad that you liked it!

    was the vocoder a plug-in?

Ive been trying to get some results out of one but man they are difficult to use for small parts let alone what you've managed here

    super clean mix

    nice one!

    KC
Yes the vocoder was a plug in.....and free to boot!!!!
It is the Tal-Vocoder and if you go to the Tal web site you can down load you own for the very cool price of Nada  !!!!

You are correct that they are very difficult to get going......I have a thread over in the softeware area about how to get this silly thing to work.......

If you go over there and search for it you will see how it is done HOWEVER if you need some help I would be more than willing to do what ever I could for you......you can PM me your email address and I will give you a step by step if need be........

this Tal Vocoder is really ez (of course once you know how to !!! but is that the way it always is?)

Please just let me know...I'm a willing to help
    Cliff

    Brilliant Cliff

I just picked up a copy of the Tal vocoder with a freebie dvd so Ill fire it up...there's one with ableton but other than useing it for two or three words Im not comfortable at all

Ill track your thread down and give it a read..I definitely think there's room in my songs for vocoders..I love 'em!

will give you a shout if its bamboozelling

    Keith

    Keith
I loved the sound of this vocoder right away...and the last couple of entries of that thread deal specifically with how to use this Tal-Vocoder.... So it should help......but if not please do let me know and we'll work it out together....

I cannot wait to hear some of your material as well......I be it's killer!

Cool man...like the horns and the funky lick.  This is really well arranged.  I'm assuming you don't have a main singer.  I'm not really a fan of vocoder stuff but hey from an artistic perspective it's cool.  The samples (I'm assuming) of the female...if you could make that happen for the main verses this would be a knock down tune!!  Its got a cake vibe particularly from the horns...its got a great feel.

    Overall tho..great work on this

wow whadda lotta fun that was!...It hooked me right in from the first note! Love the break down at 1:10, 2:20 and 4:ish.....great kit work and love the fvox loops..very good job not over-using them...speaking of over using I think (for me) the use of the vocoder throughout the whole song stole a bit from song as a whole....If I were producing something like this (which you did a great job on!) I'd use the vocoder about 30 to 40% of the song as not to diminish its effect and power. ..not beating you up over it cuz its still one badazz tune...just think sometimes less is more...also not sure if you know what a whisper track is..but at times when we're using a heavily processed vox we will whisper the words (in time) on a sperate track and use  it to define vocals as needed.

Congrats on taking on the use of the vocoder and me hats off to you for putting together a very very cool tune!!

    great work!

You are correct about the main singer.......I just do no know anyone  who is willing to put vocals down for me......You are not the first one to say to me that a female voice would be killer on this track.....and you are all correct ......Everyone wants to hear the gal I've got doing the back ground vocals ......and frankly so would I.....but seeing as how she came on a CD Disk it would be a little difficult.....

But I do agree with everyone on this point..........I just do not know or have any one............

Thank you very much for listening.....

    1. Yes I do agree with the less is more concept........when I finally figured out that I could not even come close to a vocal on this track I decided to try to make it an instrumental...........when I figured out I had a hard time trying to come up with a melody for this and that I do not have a singer available to me I did the very next thing I could.........learn a new processor!!!!   (me and mbright ideas?????!!!)  and so the vocoder was born on this track for me................but yes I do agree less is more!!!!  point in case  the Female vox......and even they are different samples and a couple of them are different samples  either layered and /or chopped and glued.....

    2. Yes I do know about a whisper track and I did place one on this track.....If you listen really really close you will hear in a few spot the vocals do not line up or you will hear the starting of a line unprocessed......that would be my natural voice with a little reverb added to it.............however that being said......I did bury the unprocessed vocal because I did not want it to stand out.......I wanted the robot center stage............I think that I panned the unprocessed vocals hard left and right......(I will have to go back and check for you) but it is in there because I do agree with you on this point as well....

Thank you for listening to my track and commenting on it ............I do agree with you on all points...

excellent, Cliff!  this is really cool and original stuff!  the vocoder worked out great, but i'd bring it up a little in the mix, it sounds just a little low compared to the female vox.  where did you get that female vox, btw?  that's pretty cool!  all vocoder would not have worked, IMO, using the female vox as a contrast was perfect!

solos would have been a little better with real instruments, but it works like it is.

I really enjoyed this, very cool!

Thank you for the listen and comments!!

I tried to bring it up in the mix but it started to incoprate some distortion so I left it at that vol........But I agree with your view on this......

The Femal vox I got off a Computer Music CD ... I would have to go back and find out which one if you really want.......I am glad that you got that contrast idea.....because that is exactlly why I used it.....I  took her samples and I layered some of them, I chopped some of them and twisted some of them as well and was very surprised they came out like they did.....I was very pleased!!!!!   I have been asked what her name is ...... I just called her Ann  (for anamation!  LOL)

You are correct ...all vocoder for everything would not have worked is correct......I was just hoping that the play between the two would give enough relief to make it work...

If you really read the lyrics you will find the double meaning as well............

The Horns.......?????  Yeah....I know that a real horn section would of just been killer.......But I am having a hard enough time trying to find a female vocalist let along a horn section!!!  LOL....
I was trying to EQ the horns so that I could get the bells to buzz........if I could of .......welll I would have just gone completly out of my mind..... so I had to settle for samples......

Thanks Reece for the listen and the comments......I really do appreciate everyone who has stopped by and lent me their views......some day I may even get good!!!!!  (and then I would not even know what to do!!! LOL)

BTW - I am pretty sure I "got" the lyrics!    very nicely done!

and I certainly do not mean that the horns were bad, it's just obvious that they're samples.  I struggle with that problem myself since I don't play horns or strings, but I love to have them in my songs.  it's not a bad thing - just the way it is!

I took it in a good fashion.....and I understand .....it's all cool...........IF I had the money for you know the best horn samples I would be making my living doing this......but since it is just an obsession (lol) then I have to settle for GPO Jazz Band (which in and of themselves are not bad but your  right .....you can tell )  so it's all good my brother........
