I see. Yes. I do something similar. A Two Notes Torpedo Captor into my Scarlett 18i20 ... then running NadIR I load OwnHammer IR files into the track. It works great! But here is the shortcoming. You don't really get the feel of the speaker this way as you are laying down the track. Whereas if you could have all of this inside a single box, not only would it be better in s tracking environment, but it would also be portable enough to haul around with you and use live.

My ultimate direct recording tool would be what I described above. Just like the OxBox, but it lets you run Third Party IRs that you can load directly into the box and configure using a PC or even a smartphone.

it appears i've fallen off the tune-wagon yet again ...

actually, just sticking a mic on a cranked up rig still works best for me.

Nothing will ever beat the real thing.

The OX is setup like this:
  • Cab (17 different cabs)
  • Mic 1 (6 different mics, on/off axis, HP filter) - dedicated EQ
  • Mic 2 (6 different mics, on/off axis, HP filter) - dedicated EQ
  • Room Mics (condenser and ribbon mics mono/stereo) - dedicated EQ
  • Master Section - dedicated EQ, 1176 dynamics, Delay/Mod, Plate Reverb

FWIW, I've spent a fair amount of time creating cab IRs (for use with Helix and Axe-FX).
By comparison, the OX may seem limited having (only) 17 different cabs.
With the various mics, positions, EQ... you can find a good cab sound for just about anything (clean to super dirty).
The sound is more dynamic than using IRs (primary reason I got it)... thus, I don't miss the ability to load IRs.

OX is using Apollo/UAD2 technology.
At some point, I'd expect to see optional cabs/mics/FX.
Recording via USB may also be a future feature.
Those things said, I didn't buy the OX for what it might be... I got it hoping the dynamic speaker modeling would be a step beyond IRs.  IMO, It is...

It's a long video, but it'll give you a real-world idea of the possibilities (multiple amps, multiple guitars, etc).

You pulled the trigger!
Pete's video pretty much says it all in terms of the sounds you can get, so I won't go there.
I did do a quick latency test. I've posted a screen shot here.
All signals were captured simultaneously.
Here's a quick signal chain.
Guitar > Little Labs DI > DVA 50 > Palmer PDI-09 > OX AMP > Digital and Analog > UFX > SPLAT
Using the DI recorded signal as the base:
the Palmer is 5 samples late (speed of light huh?)
the OX SPDIF is 114 samples late
the OX Analog is 126 samples late
Does it matter, what's 114 or 126 samples at 44.1k; couple feet?
The big thing is the "feel", next the "dynamic speaker modeling".
I'm really wanting to love this thing.
My concerns:
The digital out; is it locked at 44.1k?
Of course going analog in you can sample at any rate you want, but with the additional DAC.
Will additional speaker, cabinet, mic models be free or "pay for play"?
I'm guessing that additional effects will become available as "pay for play".
Will there be a MKII at some later date that "fixes" any issues?
ie: if the digital is locked at 44.1k and requires a chip change to add 48k and 96k.
I'm guessing that there will some pressure to add at least 48k.
Lack of Windows support is an issue, but if its WiFi only, I don't think I want to go that way.
Well that's my nickel98's worth.
This bad boy IS pricey! But it does "feel" and "sound" right.
The Two Notes Torpedo Reload with their "Wall of Sound" is a similar (kinda) solution.
Wish you could link the DI to the "replay" internally.
Or the Captor, save some ca$h with that option!
I won't go there with the Studio, I'm sure its the greatest thing since sliced bread; my GAS isn't that bad!

Yes, right now the S/PDIF out is locked at 44.1k
Kind of odd...
My guess; this is to cut down on DSP load.

If you have an audio interface that can sample-rate-convert its digital input, that's an easy way to get around the limitation.
  • UA Apollo series can sample-rate-convert its S/PDIF input
  • Lynx AES-16e can sample-rate-convert it's digital inputs

This thing sounds fantastic and "feels" right. The iPad app turns me off.
So, I've made the decision to send my OX back.
I'm in it $1105 (MF 15% off Valentines sale), if you're in the Seattle area and want to check it out, PM me.
Looks like the next batch is due in early June, get it now and save me the return shipping!
