UAD Twin Duo USB

Hey everyone,

So I've been eyeing the recently announced UAD Twin Duo USB ever since I heard about it. There are a couple of things that really interest me about this interface: one is the fact that it's USB 3.0 compatible and two, it can run UAD plug-ins. It's $900 right now on Sweetwater. I currently have a Roland Quad-Capture (2.0 interface) so I'm a little hesitant about spending more money on an interface (college can do that to you). My question is, would I be getting so much more in terms of latency getting a 3.0 interface?

1 yes you will get better latency almost down to 1 ms in some cases.

2 it's not out yet., expected to be out and shipping mid to late October. Manager at Guitar Center told me they expect them to be in store 1st week of November if everything is still on track.

3 the device is $899 but the plugins are individual plugins for $99 - $300 each depending on what your adding.  the cost of doing a bunch with the device and addin plugins that work with it will be a large investment of cash.

4 no midi.  none. it's an audio interface with no midi capabilities so you will still need your other interface.

the only reason I am considering this device is that I was planning on spending almost $1000-$1500 on guitar amp hardware and this might be a solution to that problem but Im still not sure yet.  there are ENGL plugins and a few other amp sims that are supposedly really great for this device.  that's why I am interested plus I was already thinking of spending the investment money in just 1 hardware device.

I'm still undecided.  it' seems like a $900 ilok dongle with some good plugins available.  is 1 -3 ms really THAT important?

the promo that is being offered

From October 1st through December 31, 2015, purchase an Apollo Twin DUO audio interface from Sweetwater and get the UA 610A Tube Preamp Plug-In, EMT 140 Plate Reverb Plug-in, and Bermuda Triangle Distortion Pedal Plug-In for free when you register on the Universal Audio website!

you get UA 610 WITH the DUO already, so they dangle the reverb and stompbox . not  value added to me, anyway but YMMV.
If this is your only audio interface then it is very good, BUT as one said, the plug ins it runs are very expensive , albeit good quality, so you can run up a big bill .you can process input signals with the UA plugs, but as one pointed out, you are printing to tape that signal

if you need MIDI, you could use one of these ... I use one to compensate for the "prg chg only" MIDI implementation of the X32 ... works ok

Well, I suppose it depends on the context. In later stages of the mixdown, I find I'm having to increase my latency a bit to be able to prevent drop-outs. Is this a problem with anyone else? For whatever reason, I'm hoping that USB 3.0 along with the ability to run plug-ins off of the interface might help prevent those situations.
