UK Humour

Man I just love the TV and radio shows that come out of the UK. So funny and off the wall. Being a Canadian I get some of the shows rebroadcast on the CBC, but Netflix has really opened up the options. Recommended by yours truly:

Misfits, Still Game, Danger 5, Red Dwarf, Old Harry's Game, Father Ted and so on.

For folks in the UK these are probably all really old repeats, but for me it's all new. I've also watched a couple TV series that I thought were American but turned out to originally come from the UK. Life On Mars is a good example.

Anyone know of anything else I should be looking out for?

Regards, John

If you like classic British humor then you'll probably love the books of P.G. Wodehouse, the father of modern British comedy. The books he wrote at his peak (1930's - 1950's) are perhaps the funniest writing in the English language. Virtually every form of British comedy since then, from the classic kid's comics The Beano & The Dandy to classic British sitcoms like Fawlty Towers and Blackadder to the hilarious adult comic Viz, has its roots in Wodehouse in some way.

Wodehouse had a command of the English language and a turn of phrase like no other. His characters were hilarious and his plots delightfully silly. I can read a Wodehouse book and then happily re-read it 5 or 6 months later, every page is a comic pleasure. I'm currently on my 7th reading of Uncle Fred In The Springtime and will probably get started on The Code Of The Woosters after that for what must be at least the 10th time. Never get bored of them. Any time I'm feeling down, or stressed out, I know I can pick up one of the Blandings Castle or Jeeves and Wooster books and instantly be transported into a wonderful world in which nothing bad ever happens except young men inadvertently becoming engaged to women with intimidating profiles and portly Dukes who express themselves with their mustaches plotting to steal their host's prize pigs.

The Father Ted Christmas special is perhaps one of the best Christmas specials of all time.

I love Peep show, perhaps because I have known all 3 characters in real life in one form or another - Mark, Jez and Superhans. Mind that Sophie is a real beatch. I still laugh thinking about Superhans wanting to open a pub called "Free The Pedos."

My favourite is the the episode where he insults the local farmers on his radio show, and the subsequent interview with the character played by Chris Morris, just brilliant from start to finish.

Hi,

I only go as far back as The Goons, which were on radio until 1962 and a special in 1964 or something like that. They were Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe. I'm a proud owner of 124 noodles! And use many of those jokes here, but Craig doesn't care for the legs getting shorter jokes, and Bapu doesn't get the thrown in the water jokes. Of course, not sure these folks ever heard the Canal, either, the House of Teeth, or the Great Statue Debate ... that we have every day here on the Coffee House!

I RESIGN!

After that, I have a rather thorough Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, and Derek and Clive, including a DVD or two.
After that, a bunch of Monty Python albums, and solo albums, most of which have not even been done on CD.
A thorough Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, of course, including the stuff by Neil Innes (later of MP), Roger Ruskin Spear and Vivian Stanshall.

Also have Grimms, and Mike McGear (McCartney's brother).

After that I kinda fell out of it a bit, though I have the Secret Policeman's Ball's DVD's.

Watched Red Dwarf a lot, but never enjoyed that American style of living room set and comedy.

Blackadder was funny in bits, but never as good as the stuff what's his name did on the Policeman's Ball.

Also included, and not UK stuff, in my collection is the following:

Carl Stalling -- The music for the Warner Bros cartoons
Tom Lehrer
Ernie Kovacs
Spike Jones
The Firesign Theater
PDQ Bach
M. Frogg (Jean Yves Labat)

These are as good, and on par with the English stuff, and while different and crazy, the music CD's by Stalling are insane! And magnificent!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Michael Bentine too, in the early shows. He usually played 'the hero'. Still have a copy of 'The Goon Show Scripts' that I got for Christmas when I was 11 or 12.

One of my gardening customers is a lady of 87 who loved The Goons, and we often go through the sketch about the lighthouse steps. 'Did you bring the matches, Min?'

Neil Innes

I liked 'Rutland Weekend Television' and 'The Innes Book of Records', the latter was nice subtle stuff.

I have never heard a single Michael Bentine show ... never heard of anyone having a copy on cassette in those days, either!

I'm now having an issue with Amazon ... my credit card will not accept purchases from Amazon UK, and no one knows why ... miracles ... it's all miracles, right? ... and I'm working on sending one of you folks over there a work order so I can get a couple of the "compendium's" that have shows that are not released anywhere else. I think there are 4 of them I need.

I have issues buying anything on Amazon over there ... it's getting pathetically boring!

Yeahhhh ... thanks ... will do! I have to go over the list, but there is at least 3 Goon Compendiums (they have shows the other 30 CD's don't) and some other bits and books ... like was trying to get a Deke Leonard book and couldn't. Also could not get "I Dream of Wires".

Nobody's mentioned one of my all-time favorites yet, The IT Crowd.

I recently finished re-watching the entire series a second time and was surprised how hard I laughed at the repeats, despite knowing all the gags in advance.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I'm very, very surprised by the absence of "The League of gentlemen" in the lists suggested above.

I have all of it on DVD, what a great series, incredibly original and outstanding performances and production. I just wish I could get my girlfriend into it - I've tried, and she crinkles her nose up and tells me to turn it off within 2 minutes. Just too bizarre for her.

When I get the DVD, that'll be an ordeal to me as well, :o) I'm almost sure it's too tilted for my better half.
She was out of the country when the show was broadcasted here, and obviously it was too tilted for the prime time audience here as well, because I can't recall it ever been repeated, whereas all the other britcoms are running all the time on many channels.

Yeah it was deliciously disturbing. Especially that German teacher with a fondness for young boys. My favorite was the whole Pauline, Ross and Mickey saga. Pauline's pens! "Everything I know about people, I learned from pens. If they don't work, give 'em a shake! If they still don't work, chuck 'em away!"

Lots of British TV comedy first saw the light of day as BBC Radio4 productions. So, on the radio side of things, all published by the BBC, I suggest

Cabin Pressure (co-starring Benedict Cumberbatch just before he was famous)
Old Harry's Game (start both of those from the beginning or they don't make sense)
I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue (the pre Jack Dee era with Humphrey Littleton is decades worth of classic idiocy)
Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister (TV but also available as audiobooks).
And, modern TV in the same vein, The Thick Of It.

Nobody's mentioned one of my all-time favorites yet, The IT Crowd.

I recently finished re-watching the entire series a second time and was surprised how hard I laughed at the repeats, despite knowing all the gags in advance.

That's one of my favourites too.

I like the scene when one of the says he doesn't know how to behave at a funeral when greeting the relatives of the deceased.  He gets told "Just tell them you're sorry for their loss, then move on".  Of course when it comes to meeting the relatives after the event he then says "I'm sorry for your loss, now move on".

Like you say you know the gags are coming in advance but they're still funny.

'Shameless' was one of my true favourites too but I'm not sure how that would translate without being intimately familiar with the lower echelons of the British social strata like what I am... ;)

Loads, but a few of my favourites...

Detectorists (for me, the best British comedy in the last couple of years)
W1A (brilliant spoof fly-on-the-wall documentary about the BBC)
Twenty-Twelve (predecessor of the above, about the London Olympics)
Extras
The Office
Peep Show
Blackadder
Men Behaving badly
Auf Weidersehen, Pet
The Inbetweeners
Black Books
Cradle to Grave (new series, really enjoying it so far)

being a bit more metal, I will add:
The League of Gentleman (absolutely brilliant 4 man team over 3 series, macabre, bizarre comedy)
Green Wing (spoof hospital drama, some of the best UK comedy actors)
Spaced! (Simon Pegg's pre-Hollywood sit-com, if you like the Ice Cream trilogy you'll love this)
Psychoville (post-League of Gentleman. two series with Dawn French)

Memorare debut album 'Philistine' available now http://blackwoodproductio...philistine-digipack-cd

I've found that Americans are a lot fonder of some of the "sillier" British sitcoms than the British. Stuff like Are You Being Served, Keeping Up Appearances, that sort of thing. Back in the UK I used to HATE Keeping Up Appearances, I thought it represented everything that was wrong with the smug, upper middle class, luvvie darling BBC. But after living in the US a few years I came to love it and realized that Patricia Routledge is an absolute gem (along with the brilliant Geoffrey Hughes).

Looks like I need to find a bundle of money so I can stay home and catch up on all of these!  I doubt that I've seen any of the ones mentioned above...
