I'd do two things.

1. get some more dirty on the main guitar tone
2. raise vox about 1 db
3. after you export the mix, speed the whole song up about 2-3bpm, even if it's the original tempo it feels a little draggy to me for some reason.

Other than those personal prefrences, great job guys.

Excellent cover guys.  Very exciting track, and Robby stepping out of ballad mode is a real treat.  Loved it.

Grant - Thank you for the comment.  I may do a few more VH songs, they are quite a lot of fun.

Geno - You have excellent hearing.  I added the ProChannel Hi-Hat definition and Overhead Basic Presets so the drums are a little brighter.  Thanks for the comment.  Shooting Star is coming along.....

Herb - Thanks for the comment.  I agree that the vocals add a new dimension.

Thatsastrat - Thank you, I am glad the guitar is gritty enough now, I always try to keep it just short of what I think is gritty enough so it doesn't conflict with the vocals, easier to  add the grit than take it away.

James - This one came out in 1979 on Van Halen II.   Pretty good album overall.    Thanks for the comment.

Frank - Thanks for the comment.   You get to hear Ed play at the show?    I am always amazed watching him play, he is quite the talent.

Ed - I wondered about bumping the lead vox after dousing them with more reverb.   Hmmm, I will have to check the speed and see how a little boost sounds.

Phil - Glad you liked it..  Maybe Robby will be turning over a new hard rock leaf;)

I happen to be a huge VH fan myself and I must say that this knocks the doors down! Great guitar tone and Robby sounds just like D.L. Roth...no kidding!

Phil, my goal is to be considered "the most versatile" musician you know? F'ing James Yoyo is my nemesis in this regard... MF'er does this, and he does THAT! and then it's CLASSICAL!! ARG! I'm still working on it though... hahahahaha! No really? I have much respect for Jim... BUT I'LL BEST HIM AS MOST VERSATILE!! My next offering? The theme song from Sponge Bob Square Pants done acapella in a baroque format? IN YOUR FACE JAMES!! LOL!

Mark & Robbie,

This is just outstanding. I always liked this tune and you guys killed it.

Mark, great job on the guitars and mix.

Robby, your vocal on this is a revelation, man! Fantastic!

Hey, Mark,

Dynamite work on this great VH cover!  Great job recreating the feel of the original performances and vibe, and Robby did a really bang-up job on the vocals.

Cool stuff, guys!

Scott - Thanks for tuning in.   I was testing out my DLR plug-in as Robby mentioned in his response, he actually sang it in the style of Liza Minnelli;)

Gary - Thanks, appreciate that.  I really like your recent Cotton Pickin' post.   I am sure VH isn't too much of a stretch for you..

Bob - Thanks so much for the comment.   One of these days I am going to have to post an original.  First I will have to have an original thought;)

I haven't read all of the responses, but this is pretty cool!  takes me back to the '80's!

Robby's vox are good on this, I wasn't sure how well he'd pull off a DLR, but I'm pleasantly surprised!

the mix is slammed hot, I guess that's the way you wanted it.  all instrumentation is good, mix on the instruments is really good.

nice job guys!

"Trust me..." It was not easy leaping off the back of the couch, doing the splits "in mid air mine you..." And coming down on two feet, all the while holding the mic, and "working" the performance. No sir? Not easy... I may have pulled a groin muscle? Fortunately, I have about 40 years of experience with this? But that's another story, for another website...

Isn't it nice to know that while many things change? Some never do? COME ON! You know you smiled? :-) Some of you didn't? But you're not allowed to dance either (it's a sin), so I understand...

Hi Mark, I remember listening to this when you first posted it and thinking how authentic it sounded.

With the addition of Robby's excellent vocals, you guys have created an absolute monster!

Sadly, I'm old enough to have bought Van Halen II on LP when it came out - this took me right back there

Great work on the harmonics by the way - you nailed it.

Steve,

Thanks.    Sadly I am old enough to have bought VH I on LP when it came out;(    Glad you like the harmonics, I have working on them since 1981;)

Scott - thanks.  I may re-do it again at some point, I have been getting some good mixing pointers lately.

I nearly wore out my original VH I - especially Eruption

Even though I've got their entire back catalogue on CD now, I still remember listening to those first couple of albums in complete awe

Yet another VH fan checking in on an exceptional cover!  I usually don't like when people try to emulate a band or song perfectly, you guys pulled it off.  You took just enough ownership to keep it real, without sounding like you were trying too hard.  Nice job on one of my favs...

:-) Thanks everyone! Mark is a freaking chameleon when it comes to classic hits!? I told him I was going to try to do a DLR "tribute" version on this one. I was stretched to my limits... It was almost as bad as that first long night in prison? But that's another post, for another forum... We're working the knots out of another classic. And I'm working on a new original as well.

I hope everyone is surviving in 2012. If you're thriving? All the better! I'm surviving... I Look forward to thriving again someday? (hopefully) But I'm not banking on it.. If I can survive? I'm content.

Oh, please...versatility is merely my cover for having a short attnetion span.

Anyhoo, I was real impressed with RR's vocals on this...never really thought about his voice in this way (maybe cuz I have listened to way too much of it). The BG Vox are mixed all wrong, but your guitar playing is so spot on its scary.

Great stuff!  You nailed a great sound and Robby sounds as good as I've heard him.  I know he channels Henley and now Roth.  Gheesh, this is really good!  I saw them do it live and this blows that away!!!

Awesome job you guys..... Nailed this one to the wall for sure. I guess it's safe to refer to you as Diamond Robby and Marky Van Halen?  Excellent tonal quality and an incredible likeness to the original.
