Updated MC5 - No more audio.

Ok, applied the 5.05 patch and now MC5 tells me every time that another program might be using my sound card or that it's not available. I know it's bogus because Audacity and Audiomulch work just fine. Even immediately after a restart I get this. All my normal windows sounds are piped through my onboard realtek.

Any thoughts?

for the onboard realtek soundcard, change to MME driver mode
    OPTIONS>AUDIO>DRIVER MODE = MME
    click APPLY
it will run the wave profiler again.

Ack I seem to have forgotten to mention that I'm trying to get it to use my Lexicon Alpha (USB) sound device via ASIO not the onboard realtek.

I'm not sure if MC has this option but in Options/Audio see if there's an option that says 'share drivers with other programs' and un-check it.

Also be sure that you have the Alpha powered up before you open MC5.

ok - using the alpha makes a big difference.  in addition to what mike said, I'd also suggest you use ASIO driver mode for the alpha (follow the same directions above, but the wave profiler won't run for ASIO mode).

Yeah I never have used shared audio, I turned it on but it made no difference so I turned it off again.

Beagle, that's my whole issue. I've been using ASIO since I got the lexicon 6 months ago. I applied the patch and it refuses to work, so I've been switching to MME then back to ASIO again but MC5 refuses to believe the Lexicon is working or not shared. If I then open Audacity, Audacity has no issue using the Lexicon. Audiomulch didnt work at first but I checked Lexicon's website and found a driver that is only 2 weeks old, so I grabbed that and now Audiomuch works, Audacity still works, but no change in MC5.

I'm really not sure what's going on, but I guess my last option now is to just reinstall MC5 and not patch it.

    ok, a couple of questions:

what operating system are you using?
do you have the latest lexicon drivers for your operating system?
what is listed for the RECORDING and PLAYBACK TIMING MASTERS?

what operating system are you using?
    - Windows 7

do you have the latest lexicon drivers for your operating system?
    - Yes (I mentioned earlier I went to Lexicons site last night and got the latest (2 week old) drivers).

what is listed for the RECORDING and PLAYBACK TIMING MASTERS?
    - I'm not actually sure. I have seen the field you're talking about, but I think that was way back when I had Pro Audio 8. I can't seem to find Timing Masters in MC5. If you mean the playback and recording devices, they start out as "Alpha ASIO OUT L" and "Alpha ASIO IN 1", but then if I go hit record, I get the message "Unable to open audio device. Device may not support the current project's  audio format or may be in use." The current audio format is 16bit 44khz and I have loaded nothing else that uses audio (if it does it's set to use the realtek).

    How embarrasment.

It was my fault all along. I removed the speaker plug from the realtek and it auto sensed that I had nothing plugged in and rerouted audio to the Alpha. Sometimes technology is too smart for its own good.

    Thanks for your help guys.

It is a little odd that Windows using the sound card would be enough for Cakewalk to complain about it.

It is a little odd that Windows using the sound card would be enough for Cakewalk to complain about it.

That's so if you're in the middle of recording the perfect take, the program won't stop because your DING announcing a new email takes control of the audio drivers.
In fact, it's good to just turn off the Microsoft system sounds.

I generally turn Windows sounds off anyway, but Cakewalk afair asks for exculsive mode on the driver unless you tick shared, so windows shouldn't be able to interupt it with an unimportant sound. That was my understanding of it, but then I was using this system more than 10 years ago and I know the sound system has changed now. It stands to reason that it is still the case if they still provide an option to share the driver.

I really should be able to work these things out on my own as well (and well, in this case I did :p )... I've spent quite a lot of my life (ab)using computers and hardware, but hey, I don't know everything :)

There we go... not quite working yet but progress. Once again the Realtek onboard card is interferring because there is NOTHING plugged into it. It's kinda like windows needs someone to pipe its sound to so it can leave the USB card free.

I think its more like I need to set the default audio device to NOT be the USB card, so windows doesnt try and use it. That's helped the most so far. I was able to record somehow, it selected a stereo input for me, but I still cant see any inputs in the track inputs, even though in option->audio I can see the "Alpha ASIO IN 1" input.

However all of this is not consistent. I've lost them all again.

if you keep losing your inputs and outputs then windows is losing the device.  do you have the alpha plugged into a USB hub?  if so, don't.  plug it into the back of the computer in a port by itself.

same thing for the front - sometimes the front plugs can carry less current than the back ones.  use the back and see if that helps.

    Re:Updated MC5 - No more audio. 2011/01/18 09:17:04 (permalink)
    Hi Beagle,

No hub, its in the back. I have no such issues with Audacity (same as last time). I can now get the device consistently, I've determined that I must have a jack in the Realtek and I must set the Realtek as the default audio device, and I must not check the "Listen to this device" checkbox in the recording device properties for the Alpha.

So now, Audio->Options says I have an input and output, and the ASIO panel actually opens (it doesn't if any of the above are set incorrectly), and I can set a tracks output to Alpha ASIO Out L, but when it comes to a tracks inputs, I have "None" and "Selected Track Inputs". If I click Selected Track Inputs, I can select Alpha ASIO IN 1 (Left, Right, Stereo), but I get no input signal. It's definitely not the hardware, I can jump straight into the Windows Playback device settings and hit Test and it works fine.

So I'm at a bit of a loss as to why I have no inputs appearing but MC5 seems to know they are there.

OPTIONS>AUDIO make sure the Alpha is listed as PLAYBACK and RECORDING DEVICE or it won't show up as an input or output for your tracks.

Also, in Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices, turn off the Microsoft system sounds (Sounds>No Sounds). You may want to disable the RealTek in the Device Manager, too.
By chance is this a Media Center computer?

Audacity is a very bad ruler for success with a Recording sequencer. It always works regardless of setup, kind of like saying Microsoft recorder works but MC won't.

Audacity is automatically setup, but MC requires a bit of effort due to the plethora of choices.

Beagle: Done that. That's my whole issue. It's there in Options->Audio in both playback and recording, but wont show up in the track!

Greg: Disabling the device totally was something I kept meaning to do and got side tracked. I feel that may end up being a problem though because then Windows will try and route default audio to the USB, which cakewalk doesn't like.

Robo: I'm using Audacity to prove that the hardware is in fact connected to my PC correctly and audio is coming through. Beagle had asked me to make sure it was plugged in correctly, and it definitely was.
