Upgrade price for P5 v2.0?

After reading the P5 v2.0 news, I could help but NOT notice any upgrade pricing info for existing P5 owners. Or for that matter Sonar 4 and P5 owners -- what is the scoop -- upgrade pricing just not set yet?

Looking forward to April.

Keep up the good work Cakewalk.

Rob.

i think it's the ususal policy that the product is announced, the feature set described and the proposed launch date.

that all works to build some excitement and anticipation. any mention of upgrade price at that point would just bring things down.

as we approach the launch date, the prices will be broadcast. Like everything else it's complex. If as i suspect the multi-pad feature is being 'borrowed' from Kinetic there may be different pricing for Kinetic users (since it would seem that Kinetic features will almost completely be swallowed by P5 v2), than Sonar users, and, of course, the handful of existing P5 users.

We all think software development cycles are long and arduous, but nobody has any idea what those poor souls in sales and marketing go through to determine price points. So many lunches and business trips and extended fact finding junkets. They're always exhausted and pounding the caffeiene and aspirin. Not everybody's cut out for that sort of life.

And after all that research and number crunching is anybody happy with the prices they come up with. Well, no, 'cause free would be better.

I'm a software engineer so I really don't mind paying full retail as I do know exactly what goes into releasing retail applications. 90 hr work weeks are common.

1 year is a short cycle, but that is what most companies aim for -- EA for example are desparately trying to get below 18 month cycle.

I was just curious why they didn't provide an upgrade price, but they did offer a retail price for P5 -- when they announced Sonar 4, the upgrade price was provided at the time of the annoucement.

I however, don't understand why everyone wants everything for free? Is that really the case? Sounds like communism to me -- are you suggesting musicians and hobbiest are all communist? I personally have no interesting in working 90 hr weeks for a year and then proceed to give away my work to millions of people. But I'm a capitalist.

I would buy the product at full retail as it is worth every penny.

Its certainly not free. Only those who buy P5 after February get the upgrade for free....

I agree with Robains. Sounds like CAKE really earned their way on this one...we'll see!

So if P5 right now is about $150-$200. the up grade should be no more than that. If you dont own p5, i think its a good idea to buy it now at the cheap price and get the free upgrade. and if the upgrade is more then $200, can;t u just buy p5 and upgrade it when the time comes?

gosh, I'm a software engineer as well
and as far as i know not a communist
and most probably a capitalist, given the debt load I'm carrying and the belief that sometime in the future I'll be able to pay off that debt

i've been developing software since about 1978 and brought a lot of products to market in that time, but have never worked or been expected to work a 90 hour week. Occasionally (once or twice a year maybe a few weeks at) 50+ hours a week. I get tired. All the Mountain Dew in the world doesn't help at some point. A company had a lot of management, productivity and burn-out issues if they're pushing employees to work 90 hours/week.

If Cakewalk developers are working 90 hours a week ... well, please don't. I'd rather have the product a few weeks or months later than to have a product written and tested under those conditions.

For which I'll pay a fair price, as offered.

Maybe that is why you're carrying a debt load -- sorry couldn't resist, but point being your cash flow situation is not a determining factor is Cakewalk's prices.

I don't know what type of products/applications you produce, but the entertainment industry (of which Cakewalk is a member) has a unique structure/deadlines as compared to other types of applications.

I've been coding since 1980 (had a few articles published from 82-85), professionally since 1987 and I've had many 90 hr weeks, in fact, I'm coming down from 4 consecutive 90 hr weeks right now to meet a Jan 31 deadline. So long as I'm learning, burn-out isn't a problem.

I don't think the price structure will be determine by what you consider "fair"? But as pointed out, I can't see the upgrade costing more than $200.

So if u see the upgrade being more than $200. would u think its a scam to buy p5 again now for the price it is now and get the free upgrade?

Not sure I'd call that a scam -- but it would definitely not be in Cakewalk's best interest and Cakewalk have consistantly been very generious with their existing customer base in the past.

But I try to avoid "what if" situations when I can't validate the result of the "what if" -- it's just a waste of time to guess and assumptions are perhaps the cause of 99% of the worlds problems today. :)

i hope you had somebody come in to feed your pets during that time.

just out of curiosity what part of the country are you working in where 90 hour weeks are common?

I dont think i would take the time and effort to buy p5 again for the free upgrade, but i would think that cause u can get a free up grade if u buy p5 now, that they would make the upgrade for p5 owners just as much as P5 cost now or even cheaper.

Live in CA -- where you too can own a 1200 sq/ft home for only $750,000 and pay 50% higher gas prices and 200% higher power prices. :)

I'm still trying to figure out why the CA real estate market is the way it is -- my only conclusion is that there are a lot of people in CA that can afford $4500-$5500 mortgages. The entire real estate market in CA is bizarre, I've never seen anything like it -- my property value has increased $97,000 in 6 months.

My only conclusion is that there must be A LOT of wealthy foreign investors keeping the trend going as there is no other place on the planet (legal) where you can drop $650,000 and get a return of $97,000 in 6 months.

No pets, no kids, fortunately my wife works 24/7 also -- but when we do allocate time off, we play hard. :)

Dang! You know how much avocados are going for here in California??? They're like $1.00 EACH!! And that's for little ones. I haven't had an avocado in months.

Back on topic- Cakewalk has historically priced their upgrades very fairly and I have complete confidence that they'll take care of their loyal users with a reasonable price for the upgrade. My guess would be something like $99.00.

Ok, I can't concentrate anymore. All I can think about is tons of avocados lying around.....

as an employee of a small coffee company here in Seattle, s\where I work MAYBE 50 hours/Week (the extra 10 hours spent finding parking and loading up on caffeine) I would gladly be willing to barter my free pound of coffee a week.....

Having said that- I am a new owner of P5 (well NOV purchase) and I think that this board is amazing due to the depth and breadth of knowledge that is so willingly shared here. So- a belated thank you to all of you for your informative and sometimes humorous posts from a lurker that is now out!

Coffee, now ya talkin' -- there really is no substitute -- in fact one of my 15 min works is called "Coffee" -- as you may have guessed the tempo increases thru the duration -- starts about 80 and finishs at 140.

The new P5 v2 at $200 is good for about 4000 lbs of western Canadian barley... Freight not included. Takers? Just an example to put into perspective the value of $200 to some....Are our rural communities treading on 3rd world status?

Yow $200 upgrade for Sonar customers!?!?!?! Its only $289 if you buy it straight out, that means I lost ten bucks buying it for $99 when it was on special. This just seems wrong to me - if you bought it for $299 originally, you would be in deep now! Or at the $199 price its I think the upgrade price is out of line.
Still, I don't see a price for existing P5 customers, so maybe there is a chance it will be less, I'm not really certain I will upgrade at that price, seeing as a great deal of what is new in P5 was simply ported over from Sonar, which of course I already own.
Am I off base here? This just seems a bit much to me.

Nice snag, Blue. I was planning on the worst case scenario, and set aside 2 bills. Looks like I've got some "found money" to waste ...er, invest in some other audio-related direction.

Now how weird is that - if its $199, and the free upgrade version is a $100 value, one might suppose that the pay for version upgrade would be $100.
Still, $199 is still $199 no matter how you cut it - Brock, you own Sonar right? So how does this benefit you?
Or maybe I am just being dense here..........

I believe $200 was stated as a worst case scenario. I called Cakewalk and talked to a sales rep, they have not yet set an upgrade price for either exisiting Sonar 4 owners nor existing Project 5 owners, but he assured me it would be lower than $200.

But if your choice is food or the new Project 5 v2.0, then I'd suggest you opt for Food and live with Project 5 v1.5 unless you have the talent and skills that requires the new features of Project 5 v2.0 -- but there again if you did, I don't think you'd be so concerned about cost.

Sorry, I'm just over it -- in the Sonar forum in Project 5 forums, too many folks just whining and moaning about upgrade costs and how Cakewalk are causing them to give up food, yada yada yada. Get over it and move on. If you are really so concerned about cost of living, then move to Etheopia or Ghana and get things back into perspective. And yes I have lived in Ghana so I do know.

Yeah, Dana, I've reached Sonar 4.02 through various upgrades, and also own P5, of course. You're right in that I am assuming a $100 upgrade cost for current Sonar/Project5 registered users from the blurb that Blue posted. The advantage to me is that I had planned on spending up to a limit of $200 for the upgrade, and now it appears that figure will be on the high side.

You've got to hand it to Rob, though. When you take in the big picture, chasing this or that upgrade on the endless path to the latest & greatest means nothing. I count myself among the fortunate to even be able to consider 'difficult' choices like this. Having said that, if the promised feature set of P5II really delivers on its potential, I'd say that it will be well worth the (speculated) upgrade cost.

If my concerns came off as whining, that wasn't what I intended.
Everyone has the right to express their opinon here and that's fine with me, but isn't there a better way to disagree with someone than getting personal about it?
