VCV Rack - Open-source virtual Eurorack DAW

VCV has been in development for a few months. It has quite a collection of modules with more planned. User contributions are starting to show up. Currently a standalone synth. There is a plan to add FX and instrument VST plug-ins to communicate with it soon. Here is an image from the main page

There are also a few videos showing up on YT and a kvr thread.

Wow, that's an ambitious project. Might be a bit daunting for the casual user, though.

Still, it's clearly in its infancy, and once there's a sizable patch library and a VST wrapper it'll be much more accessible to the masses. Definitely worth keeping an eye on.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

It does look interesting. I will certainly be having a play around with it, I wonder how it will compare to Softube's commercial Modular.

It's a pretty good start. Once the stackable cables and scrolling to make connections are added patching will be comparable to Softube. Right now, it's multiples and making sure the input and output are visible on the screen. Adding/moving/deleting modules is more natural than Softube. AudibleInstuments and ESeries modules are ports of the manufacturers' open source used in their hardware.

I've downloaded and installed Rack, of course, I mean, why wouldn't I haha!

Had a brief play but had a few issues with the GUI and couldn't be bothered sorting it out.

Question for me, is, should I be contemplating the likes of Rack and Softubes Eurorack emulation when I have the real thing gather dust just three feet away from me?

Good question, it probably depends on what modules you have in your Eurorack and, importantly, why it gathers dust.

One of the advantages of the Softube modular over the real thing (apart from cost and space) is the ability to have several instances of the same module in a patch. The DAW interface is good with the ability to sync to tempo at various rates (more if you also use the clock divider) and have multiple audio outputs. Additional modules are a fraction the price of hardware.

I have had fun building patches with multiple sequencers and slew limiters at different tempos controlling various parameters, something that would probably appeal to you for creating the sort of evolving soundscapes you produce. To have all those sequencers would make for a pretty expensive and large hardware EuroRack.

Aye! You have me there, Glyn, for sure... Soft versions of modular stuff is always going to be more cost effective and flexible. Perhaps there is a place for both

I am still using Reaktor Blocks from time to time, but even the so called "user friendliness" of Blocks, patching things up in Softube and, indeed, Rack, is so much more intuitive, once you know how things work.

I think, however, that having a hardware modular system can be a lot more "satisfying" than a software version of the same thing.

I'm hoping I'm not sounding too much like a hardware snob there haha! I still love all my soft synths and effects

There was a problem prior to 0.3.1 requiring presets load from the same folder as the program or the modules would not display properly.

The developer is pretty responsive. Either email issues or report them at Github.

I believe the program is being developed on a Mac and the programmer does not have much experience with Windows. To compile the program on Windows requires MSYS2 a Unix-like environment.

updated to 0.3.2

I did not overwrite the Rack folder instead renamed it and copied the new version into a fresh Rack folder.
Then copied the session.json from the old Rack folder into the new one. This saves retyping login.
Ran rack, refreshed plug-ins. So far plug-ins must be updated with every release.

Version 0.5.0 is on the horizon should have a new zoom facility and is supposed to be using a new Audio API.

Re: VCV Rack - Open-source virtual Eurorack DAW 2017/11/19 18:15:52 (permalink)
Yes, I just compiled the current dev version. ASIO is broken on Windows and the suggested fix is not working ATM. It appears the plan is to drop ASIO support in 0.5.0. Not a big deal as other drivers work.

Zoom is handy and Rack size is now persistent.

Some nice new modules too but I suspect that it will be a little while after 0.5.0 before most user modules are brought up to date. The module API is still a moving target.

Looking forward for the VST bridge which should be coming up next month.

I have got a make environment establish on one of my PC and have been successful with a few of the ones not complied for windows, but have been a little busy with other things.  The ASIO support is a little annoying the current 0.4.0 version also seem to have a problem with Firewire devices (other have reported the problem) it frequently (read mainly) fails to find my Pro 40 though it appears to be the WASAPI that actually breaks the audio.  That fails and just kills off all audio.

Did not bother to announce 0.5.1. It temporarily added a plug-in manager for free and paid modules. Plug-in manager free module support was suspended until the release of 0.6.0 which is scheduled for March. The plug-in web page does list most of the module creators and pre-compiled versions of the free modules. Even bigger news...0.6.0 will include the VST/AU bridge to interface VCV Rack with your DAW.

Re: VCV Rack - Open-source virtual Eurorack DAW 2018/03/28 18:42:10 (permalink)
So 0.6.0 is rolling out. Currently, the binaries are available from links provided on the FB discussion group. The audio portion of VCV-Bridge is included. It works as a GUI-less FX plug-in. I have it loaded on a couple of tracks in SONAR 2017.09. Since it is an FX plug-in it must be routed to an Aux Track to record in real-time. Still more convenient that using one of the record modules in rack. Most of the plug-ins developed in 0.5x have been ported to 0.6.0. All of paid plug-ins have been ported but I have not found the new Hora modules.

update:
Hora modules released today.
Played around a little more with the audio VCV-Bridge. It can send and receive audio. Not only will the plug-in send audio from the track it is on but shows up as sends on other tracks as well. Add to that 16 CV automation envelops for each of the 16 ports in the plug-in.

0.6.1 released
change log here https://github.com/VCVRac...blob/v0.6/CHANGELOG.md
breaks modules from Bidoo, NYSTHI and trowaSoft see update below

Update: Bidoo and trowaSoft compile OK from source so, a fix should be released soon. trowaSoft update from plug-in manager has a bad dll. Chances are the old version is still good. Version 0.6.1 of NSYTHI works. The problem is Spectre in the newer releases.

Update2: NYSTHI updated for VCV 0.6.1. Modllz crashes VCV 0.6.1.

Update3: Modllz fixed

It is not a plug-in though. It is a stand alone synth. VCV Bridge the VST/AU plug-in that communicates between VCV and the DAW now supports MIDI. Just verified the DAW can control synth start/stop and a bug in 0.6 which crashed Rack on windows if multiple MIDI were added to a patch is now fixed.

have you managed to get bridge to work with CbB?  If so how?

For
  • audio channels 1+2 from VCV Rack
  • 16 CV signals to VCV Rack
  • 16 MIDI channels to VCV Rack and
  • transport control
use
  • VCV Bridge set to port 1 in an audio track FX Rack. Set the track output to an aux track (for recording)
  • create one or more MIDI tracks. Set the track output to VCV Bridge.

For additional audio tracks from VCV Rack and CV signals from CbB, create an FX Chain containing VCV Rack. Here is the FX Chain preset I created. Note: while the VCV Bridge supports multiple outputs, using the plug-in in an audio track restricts the plug-in to the first 2 audio channels.
  • add the FX Chain to the FX Rack of a stereo track and set the track output an aux track
  • set the port to 2 or higher on the VCV Bridge in the FX Chain
In VCV Rack
  • set the Core Audio module to Bridge and the appropriate port number. Use output channels 1 and 2 only
  • set the Core MIDI-CC module to Bridge and the appropriate port number (when using more than one Bridge)
  • the rest of the MIDI data from the Bridge looks just like it would from any controller
  • for transport control use start and stop on the Core MIDI-1 module

I failed to mention VCV Bridge can send 8 audio channels (4 stereo pairs) to VCV Rack, 2 from the track VCV Bridge is in and 6 as sidechains from other tracks.

VCV Rack does not transmit MIDI data.

VCV Bridge can send MIDI to VCV Rack. To do so set MIDI track outputs to VCV Bridge.
