I want to attach mini meters to the track Header that remain visible when the track is minimized.
And the MSR buttons could be narrowed to create more title space.

As far as a general overhaul, just as long as readability and font size isn't reduced, a little beautifing might be nice.
I would prefer if the interface update focused on interface functionality, like cleaning up the menus.
Make those context menus specific to the item being right clicked
Put all the settings in a setting dialog.
Move all to ini and reg setting to the above setting dialog
Make the TV grid lines usable
Make Tool Bar Window that will hold Tool Bars, that is dockable in the tabbed area.
Ability to AutoHide the Windows title bar and Standard Menu(file, Edit,...)

Why do we need the Little Auto Group Triangle, why not Auto Group all the controls in all Selected Tracks, including Input and Output setting?

How about a Track Properties window Update. Put all the controls in there, including the "builtin" EQ and FX.

How about some midi sends.

As to nice but superflous, why not be able to open the Track Icon dialog and drag the icons to the tracks.

Obviously I could go on.

Lots of stuf to do before a dangerous mono colored super metalic modification to user interface is undertaken.

I would like customizable toolbars, as some of them take up too much space when I only want to use one or two of the buttons. Also, I don't mind the look of the GUI, but the colour schemes aren't the greatest. I'd appreciate slightly brighter colours and more red tones like the fudge template in ableton live. Also, i'm not sure how to describe this, but the border colour (eg where the audio scale is displayed for each track) is always the same colour and it often clashes with several of the colour templates, rendering several very nice templates pretty useless.

RESULTS AS OF 2/18/06 4:30 p.m. EST

The votes are almost 50/50. PERHAPS Cakewalk should look into making some slight enhancements to its GUI. Skins would be a great option.

MAKE SONAR LOOK RICHER and/or MORE 3D: -------- 49%
KEEP SONAR THE WAY IT IS: ------------------- 47%
UNDECIDED/DON'T CARE: ----------------------- 4%

There have been a lot of requests for SKINS as an alternative to changing the GUI altogether

I think the look is fine
I'd rather Cakewalk spent their time getting studio connections up and running. I use an 01v96 v2 and I would dearly love to control Sonar with it but I'm hamstrung by Cakewalk not implementing the capabilities.

Put me down for 1 Vote for studio connections or at least an 01v96 control surface.
Until then Cubase it is.

I feel like a broken record Cakewalk has not written for any control surface they did however provide a library of calls to interface to Sonar. The supported control surfaces were written by the manufacture (ie Frontier Design for the Tranzport and FW-1884) or individuals like Chris Boucher (Mackie Control).

And I vote for a change (I would like to see a cleaner looking screen) less is better.

I vote for a sonar facelift .. all the way .. I like very much what Adobe have done with their new software .. premiere, encore and audition 2 all use the same GUI .. and it is FANTASTIC!!!
that is exactly how a gui should be!

..but is it 20 - 40% better ?

Calls for skins have been unenthusiastic. With two exceptions, they have been along the lines of: have your skins if you must, as long as there is a way to return to the standard look.

Well you know what Sonar needs? A more organized way to display plugins. It's a mess to have a bunch of plugins populate your screen; it would be neat to have a "rack" that displays the plugin name and where it goes, and double-clicking it would open the full plugin window. When you don't need to see it, just double-click on it or click on the corner or something.

Elson I think you are on to something there, as well as sorting out the mess of folders and files in the plugin list, perhaps there is some scope for and 'expose' / 'kompose' (http://kompose.berlios.de/index.html) feature where you drag the mouse to the side of the screen and you are presented with all the plugin windows as thumbnails and some right-click tools to help order and sort them.

This is still not a vote for a facelift! I want a 'snagging' release where there are no new features, just that the ones that are there already are made to work seamlessly.

Have you tried Sonar 5's Tabbed views? maybe this would go some way to what you're looking for.

So we have a mixed bag,

Some would like:

1) options to skin

or/and

2) a change in the look to make it similar to other apps

and others

1) See that this is not as important as audio issues/feature enhancements and improvement. eg true side chaining etc etc.

2) are happy with it as it is.

 Yes.

What if we had a widget to select two modes?

(1) show all open plug-ins
(2) show current track open plug-ins only

If you had (2) selected the screen clutter would be reduced and you'd only see opened plug-ins related to the focus track. But, then, you'd probably have a lot more plug-ins actually open at a time than you normally would. I don't know what that would do to your system performance.

No skins, no bloat. Put me in for a no vote.

Sure, evolutionary change is gonna happen. Nobody said freeze it.
And sure, the more that is on the screen, the more clutter you have.
But I WANT to see as much as possible. That's why I got a matrox triple head card.
And the current scheme allows the user to see as much as possible in as much space as necessary.

While I think that the current look of SONAR is nice, I must admit that a more modern interface would be great. I just love nice design looking interfaces and a skin option would definitely be a good idea to improve the look and please all users. Ofcoarse this woudln't make it sound better, but hence I just love good looking softs ...

Personally, I'd like to see some usability improvements to the toolbars. Not sure if 3D would help, maybe some color would help make the individual buttons jump out more. As it is now, the toolbar buttons are just a monochromatic blur and it takes too much effort/time to find the button you want to click on.

I'm happy with the current interface. If any dramatic changes are made, please allow some way for us philestines to go back to the current interface.

The boring Windows-look is stable, customizable...

Same here. I don't need Sonar to look "cool", "hip" "pro" or anything else. I just want it to function as unobtrusively and efficiently as possible. I just want it to work, so I can focus on the music. Whatever modest computer literacy I may have was learned on the Windows platform., so this is what I'm comfortable with. The less extraneous GUI gloss to fuss over, the better.

But if CW wants to make skins, and Sonar users want them, fine by me. But I don't think I'd pay any attention. I don't even use track icons. Couldn't care less.

I concur.

You guys on the "Yea" side of the question need to "put up or shut up" in my opinion. How many of you have actually tried to design a GUI, particularly one of SONAR's complexity? If more of you were putting forward mock-ups or prototypes as suggested improvements (and I absolutely do not count "look at product X - it ROXXX!" comments in this category).

I have spent (and continue to spend) time tweaking a custom color scheme in SONAR 5 and I have learned to appreciate the UI designer's decisions in keeping a complex process simple. Being a programmer by trade, I have tried mocking up a "better" ui for SONAR and I gave up because it is very difficult to get a better, more productive UI together that wouldn't represent a loss of productivity or features.

Frankly, kudos to the designers, and let the developers spent time on things that matter.

RE: VOTE for a Sonar facelift!!!!! 2006/03/08 15:02:06 (permalink)
I just started a new thread on this topic myself.

I think this topic depends completely on the type of person using the program. I Myself am also a cartoonist/graphic artist and so the visual appearance of a program is a huge player in how much I utilize it and enjoy being in its....atmosphere, for lack of better verbage.

So here is a huge vote for a streamling of the Sonar GUI. I find it too cluttered and in general not up to par with say logic or any of the NI softies. Having recently checked out the Dimension Pro and Radius instruments one of my first thoughts was, Man those are tight interfaces, and then it stuck me that I paid double that for Sonar 5 and didn't get nearly that class of an interface (even though the icons are nice).

Skins would be a great idea, as well as some simplification similar to Ableton Live.

I just feel like all the buttons in Sonar look the same and everything is....boring, visually speaking.

But on the good side all the new features and the new sound engine in v.5 pro absolutely Rock!! way to go Cakewalk..keep it up!
