I would love to see a new GUI for S6. Mainly I'd like to see something that flows with the new GUI and graphics engine of Vista. I love what they've done in 5 and would simply like to see it adapted for Vista's "glassy" look.

Windows Vista, and associated Microsoft releases such as Microsoft Office 12 and Internet Explorer 7 explore user interfaces without a traditional menu.

Although, the standard File, Edit, View etc menus are still there, hiding away. You just have to press ALT to show them.
I'm with you on this though, the ability to navigate through vista without the use of these menus is remarkable, and it really makes the interface so much leaner. now, if they'd put the refresh button on IE7 on the left instead of the right, I'd be happy! I don't know why this is, there's just something that doesn't fit in my brain about it being on the right!
I can't comment on the new Office series, as I've never seen them, but the similar features in the Vista version I got to play with were cool.

It would be smart to have a facelift to "shut people up" that use that against sonar, but obviously, many current clients dont care and dont desire a new look. I think we need the option. Like you can make windows xp more fancy on the tool bar, etc., you should be able to do it wiht sonar. I say on the new sonar, it gives you the option of new look or the same look as before "upon install". Then, afterward if you want to try the new look or revert back, it is an option. Of course, this is definitely not as important as the stability and smoothness of how sonar runs, but overall, it is a smart move marketing wise. To be completely be against improving the look is like being against loose fitting jeans and swearing by ankle biting tight jeans, lol... Really though, a slong as it is an option to revert back, I would love to see a new look that competes if not exceeds the look of competitors that dont have the bad rep of visual appeal and visual workflow.

Oh - I know that the menus are still there :) But I haven't used them in IE7 yet - and from what I've seen of the Office GUI, I wouldn't need them in Office unless I was doing something really REALLY inefficiently.

Overall, realistically, Sonar 6 will PROBABLY have an updated GUI. It seems increasingly harder to make people believe that something is new and better unless you change the visual look. I mean - itunes has completely changed visual schemes on EVERY MAJOR RELEASE. Last year it had 3 complete redesignes to my count. So yeah - it seems that in Joe Blow consumer - new look = better. And "lots of good stability and features" means nothing. It's sad, but it seems to be true.

Yay! Another Cakewalk Knight in shining armor.
You seem to be taking this strangely personally ...wicked.
God forbid anyone offers suggestions you don't approve of.
BTW...Bono sings like a girl.

In order:

+ well, I like Cakewalk's products a lot, and I've used them for over a decade, so sure, I'd back them up against people who trash them, I don't see anything wrong with that.

+ nah, just blowing off some steam about this thread... and the whole "cakewalk needs to do what we tell them" minority that gets all throng and brimstone every now and again. I like most of the people, so it's just chest-thumpn'

+ I like people suggesting anything, no worries there. I get a little eye-rolley when the tone turns towards accusatory towards a software company who has consistently made good products and has a good connection with their user base. I always support open discussions and community. I am a fanatic opponent to the whole "registered users only forum" people strictly because I think everyone should be involved in helping make us all better users of the product.

+ He sings like the richest, baddest ass girl I know. And once he's got a nobel prize under his belt I think he's going to launch himself into space to represent earth in some intergalactic american idol contest.

Maybe Sonar 7 will be fully Vista-ized, with a transparent console, so you could have it floating above your track view all the time, and Flip3D for multi lane tracks!!
I wouldn't put money on Sonar 6 being fully Vista-prepped, based on annual Sonar releases being around september-october time. Sonar 7, well, I'd be unhappy if it wasn't Vista-ready (although naturally, backwards compatability is essential - don't ditch 95-odd % of your userbase!)

Well, I skimmed through alot of the posts...musta missed the ones where Cakewals was getting trashed. The only suggestion I made (serious one) was that they could have more intense color schemes. I stated I liked the interface. But I wouldn't tear a strip off everyone who suggested they'd like a change, heh heh. I don't need the interface funkified, but I prolly wouldn't mind it either.

I just want to put my word in on this again, I really like the muted colour scheme, when I'm sat in front of sonar over a 14-hour day, my eyes aren't bleeding at the end of the session - unlike protools!

After recently purchasing cubase via their cross-grade deal I can honestly say fancy graphics do not make ape-**** of a difference.

the comping, the draggable FX, the routing in sonar are hugely more important than fancy rendered graphics.

Kind regards

I can't believe this thread has gone to 9 pages.

It is insane to think that Cakewalk would not change the GUI. I think there are issues that need to be addressed first but the user interface is always a priority, always. You might not want to hear this as there are many little issues that we would all like to see rectified, but if you don't think that there are people clocking in time, as we speak, on the GUI, you're nuts.

I agree. I still can't believe the CAKEWALK team has not submitted a response to this thread however I'm sure they must have purviewed it. They probably just don't want to get involved the debate but there are enough requests to do something about the GUI. I'm sure it will be addressed in the next build.

Doesn't surprise me too much... I doubt there's a response to this thread that would please both sides. Or maybe they have something planned and don't want to give it away just yet.

Either way, I know I wouldn't want to be the one to post here.

Well,
YOU all have bought Sonar for making music, I think. Why the hell must be changed everything for any user?
If you want to use Sonar with other people, they have to learn your sight first before they can work with it.
For example: If you have a screwdriver in red, would it be better work, when it's in green?? If you say yes, you should go back to the kindergarten, and all will be good...

I don't mean changes into functionality, please don't missunderstand me...

Detailed breakdown of voting:

All names appear once (I hope!).
The first post per name was registered. subsequent ones were ignored.
Some opinions were difficult to categorize. If you disagree with my interpretation, I'll change it.
Skins requests were sometimes for change, sometimes to protect the status quo. The intention decided my interpretation of the vote. Some requests were not for GUI but for functionality requests. I have registered those separately.

I think the biggest plus from giving Sonar a facelifet would be to benefit workflow. My feeling is Sonar's GUI should take advantage of Vista's graphical workflow enhancements a la Flip 3D. Using that for multi lane editing was a great suggestion I read a few posts earlier. I'd love to see S6 give the end user benefits in ways like that that are more than simply pretty graphics, but rather usable features and benefits based on those enhancements. I'm sure the bakers have something cooking.

Oh, I just want three things

1. Ditch the modal forms
2. Ditch the modal forms
3. Ditch the modal forms

i.e, I bring up a property page and change something and IT CHANGES!. Not "I bring up a property page and now everything stops and I have to change it and press Ok and then, oh, no, its still not right, so I bring up a property page and....

Otherwise I don't care about 2D, 3D etc. It looks perfectly fine to me right now, really.

Strange point to make, I know... but I kinda miss the stronger outline on notes in the piano roll?

The notes stood out a bit more in previous Sonar versions (regardless of colour) as they had a stronger 'faux 3d' highlight and shadow on them.

I tried searching for an option in the .ini, but it seems to be hardwired.

Would like to have that possibility back in Sonar. Perhaps it made the in-line piano roll messy.

I think the best way to please everyone is to keep the Sonar 5 GUI the way it is for the conservatives and have an option (perhaps skins if feasable) for others who want a more enhanced look. Obviously the option for enhancement (more 3d or whatever) shall in no way compromise CPU efficiency. If GUI enhancement will come at the cost of loss of CPU efficiency, then it is not worth it. But I'm sure it can be done.

It really is just a change of clothes. Changing one's clothes doesn't alter one's genetic make up. Some of us would like to see an extra set of clothes in the Sonar wardrobe. Windows XP had the option of Classic versus XP look.

I vote for having some sort of skinning function.

I like the way Sonar is and would really like it to look like Live or Project 5. I like a gui I can stare at for hours (or days) and not still see it when I blink.

Skinning functionality would sort out everyone out; The gui geeks can make it pretty and the music geeks can thank em and make music

Hear whats possible with no limits...
