VS-100 Live with Backing Tracks???

EDIT: Okay, I found these two threads (thought I'd remembered going through this).  Read if you want but if nothing's changed since these 2009 threads, disregard.

  1. Backing tracks, playlists and automation for live bands
    xen (V-Studio 100)

  2. Live Performance Set List Control
    doncolga (V-Studio 100)

Hey guys - Like many, I was excited when this unit came out.  I watched closely to the input and printed material.  After reading up on it and listening I opted not to purchase.

I've got a portable recording rig so I am really not looking at it from that perspective although I would use it as a two track backup recording device..

Main Use: My wife and I do quite a bit of small to medium venues with backing tracks with and without other instruments.  I would really like to get rid of the GigRig rack and all the separate pieces and simplify setup.  Ideal would be a single unit like the VS-100. All tracks on the SD card plug in mics wire to speakers and your off singing.

I am getting ready to send the Alesis IO Dock back as it is built a bit cheap and there is no all around good App to handle live mixing/playback setups.  Plus it is only two inputs so wouldn't work if I use a keyboard/guiatr.  I've tried Garage Band and a couple other mixing apps but they are geared towards recording not live mixing but there are some decent setlist apps geared towards live performance with auto pause and footswitch start/stop capabilities.

I've got a powered sub and sattelite speakers and am basically looking for something with two mic inputs, onboard FX, and the ability to play WAV, MP3, etc..  The VS-100 seems to have everything but . . .

Question: how practical is the playback system using the SD card and firmware?  From the manual it looks as though it takes several key presses to call up a song and play.  Is this correct?  Is there anyway to set up a sequence of songs (play/set list)?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.  Thanks!

Yeah, with vs100 a song must be selected which takes a few button presses and a few seconds for the song to 'load up.' So, an uninterrupted set flow is not possible with the 100 unless you put all of your songs into one wavefile on the SD card... your whole set as one long song and then just pause the playback at the gig when you want to. This could even be done with only a CD or even an mp3 player, but at least the vs100 is 24 bit audio.

Because of the vs100's very limited routing when not connected to a DAW (i dont have a laptop), I have to use a dedicated mixer with send/return, inserts, etc. This makes the vs100 become mostly redundant except for the SD card section. I'm beginning to wonder if the 24 bit playback warrants using it as opposed to a battery operated mp3 player connected to the mixer. If you have a laptop, the vs100 is much more useable at a gig.

Thanks Matt - sorry, I didn't check back with this thread after finding the others.

I was just about to purchase the 100 and glad I saw your comments (I still may since I do have a laptop with Sonar on it.  However, I was really wanting to minimize equipment.

I was afraid of this as there are other Roland products that just don't get there IMHO.

One other question: are all of the onboard FX usable in a live situation or just while/after recording?

Being that you have a laptop w/ Sonar, the 100 very useable at a small gig. An outboard preamp or two might be nice. The onboard reverbs are very good, the eq's are nice too, the compressors could really use a GR meter.
