It appears that this interface does not have native ASIO drivers and uses ASIO4ALL.  I would not recommend this interface based on that fact.

I am not sure you are going to find a decent interface at that price point.

You could also go through this http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/13-of-the-best-budget-usb-audio-interfaces-570850 and see what is closest to your needs. Then check ebay or second hand.

I avoided the manual for 5 + years.  I remember thinking "manuals are for computer nerds."  Turns out SONAR is actually a computer software program!  Who would have thought!??  Anyhow, after my third time through the manual I can confidently say that I would have saved myself literally months, maybe years, of frustration if I would have just read the manual from the get go.  Short cuts are only helpful when they get you somewhere your familiar with.

Beyond that, I too support Groove3.  Eli really makes sense to me.  Of course, this could change from person to person.

Good luck!

I also thought in the same way earlier, but you have to take her into confidence [gradually .. there are many ways] - This is very important for you 'HOME' Studio.

I started with Komplete Audio 6 of Native Instruments but a bit pricy, I still use.

I really wish I would have listened to the Amazon reviews that said "DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU ARE NEW TO RECORDING" LOL, I am not THAT new to recording, but what I was using before (freeware like Audacity) is like playhouse compared to this.... however, I have a lot of work to do.

Thanks again!

That review was written by some beginner who thought it's plug'n'play and making hit records by pushing the Pro Sound-button. The basics are practically the same in all DAWs. In any case it takes something like two years of intensive practice before you can say you know the software. Still, after that you'll find details you did not know about. The basics of Audacity are like those of SONARs audio features, Audacity just doesn't support MIDI.

I'm old school, so I prefer manuals to videos. With a manual you can get an overview of what can, and what cannot be done, and in which direction to look for solutions. With videos you need to know more exactly what you're looking for. And while reading, you think more, that enhances the whole learning process.
When I bought my first DAW, Cakewalk Pro Audio 6, I spend two weeks reading the 900 page manual before I installed the software. Now it's 1800 pages, they tell me :o/

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

I think you will fine with this. Maybe someone who has it, will chime in to tell you their experience.
Make sure to download the latest ASIO drivers for it from http://www.presonus.com/support/downloads/audiobox-usb

I've never used prosonus stuff before. but it always seems to get good reviews on the net. You could do a google search, reviews usually list pros and cons, so that might give you a chance to see if this unit will do what you need.

Lastly, I think if you now you're looking for opinions on a piece of hardware, rather than a question on how to operate software, that I might make a whole new post to that effect.  The guys on this forum have used EVERY piece of gear imaginable and I bet you'll get a lot of helpful input.

Best of luck with you projects!

Thanks again guys! New problem here.... when I'm testing my mic through the scarlett solo, I am BARELY getting any sound out of it... I have the input gain maxed out, and the "halo" around the knob barely turns green when im hitting the MIC. any ideas? it is a cheap mix, through xlr-xlr cable

What kind of mic are you using? It could be a dynamic mic, which needs a lot of gain..

Do you have phantom power on?

Does the solo have a power supply for a wall? If using USB power, phantom power may not have enough umph to drive a condenser mic.

It should. That mic ad says it need 48v. With 48v you should have way more than enough for the halo to go into the red, about half way up on the knob.

I  had a Solo for a while and powered it  from USB with mo issues FWIW.

Re: Very new to Sonar artist, where to start? 2016/02/07 18:19:18 (permalink)
Thanks for the reply guys, after a little tinkering, I noticed, whenever I run the phantom from on to off, I go get good sound levels for about 1 second, then they taper off from there.

when going from phantom off to on, I don't get much of anything.

that is telling me the the mic and cable are good right?

Good for a second implies a capacitor discharging, so a wall power supply is worth trying. Does the Solo come with one?

The solo does not come with one. it only has a USB connection in the back, no option for external power :(

I apologize, I am on cell so is difficult to type. Focusrite has always responded to emails for me pretty quickly, so is definitely worth sending them an email. If you give them your system specs and how you have hardware setup, they may be your best resource for gain issues. Definitely make mention of the powering off phantom power, since that may be crucial to being a setup issue or potential hardware issue.

Quick edit: if you click the "permalink" at the top of forum posts, you can include hyperlinks to specific forum posts in an email to them as well.
