Very new to Sonar artist, where to start?
Hello Everyone, I am very new to this, and I've been clicking around on my new program for about 5 hours now... and I have figured out close to nothing.. LOL. Is there any place I can get basic how to videos? thanks for all the help something I noticed too, when I playback a recording that I have recorded, the "bar" that moves across the track isnt matching up to whats being played out? I recorded a 12 second test vocal track, but it only shows up as a 6 second track. any reason for that? it will play the whole track, but on blank space inside the track scroller.

It's like that when I record too. the white line that goes across the track if going faster than what audio I am recording.

Hi. ^^This. I would also check the videos in that is available when installing through CCC. Whenever you have a question, just ask here in this forum. There is always people willing to help, if asked nicely And always include as much info as possible. This includes Audio Interface, pc specs and OS (X86 or X64) See my signature. This can be done in your user control panel on the top right of the screen. All the best. And I forgot to say welcome

And if your question somehow indicates you've done some homework, you'll get even more help. The ones that expect themselves to be spoonfed from point zero up never get the best place in the queue.

I'll second the other poster regarding the many free videos available online. Here's a link to a recent post for an entire course on YouTube (It's for the older Sonar X2, but the differences are fairly minimal): http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3354336 For a Sonar course that's more up to date, check out Groove3.com. The guy who teaches the Sonar vids, Eli Krantzberg, knows his stuff and is especially popular. They are having a NAMM special right now -- 33% off video downloads or streaming subs (monthly or yearly): https://www.groove3.com/cakewalk-training-video-tutorials/SONAR-Explained

You can also search on Google. Everything in the manual can be found there. You could print it out, but that thing is like 2,000 pages!! When I started with Cakewalk I just picked a few basic things to learn, such as how to record audio or how to record midi. Then when I felt comfortable with them I started adding other tasks such as how to add effects to audio or how to edit midi. The truth is SONAR is a VERY DEEP program, but the basics are easy to learn and if you give yourself a few days you'll be able to do quite a lot. Lastly, don't give up!! Come here whenever you need help, the guys on this forum are very helpful, and every problem I've ever brought here has been resolved. Best of luck to you with your music!!

Thank you all! I really appreciate all the help, And I will really try to exhaust all googling before I come here. I'm thinking the "white play bar" that goes across the channel that's playing is tied to the Metronome somehow, whenever I change the tempo, the whole track time changes, which shortens or lengthens my audio recording. I really wish I would have listened to the Amazon reviews that said "DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU ARE NEW TO RECORDING" LOL, I am not THAT new to recording, but what I was using before (freeware like Audacity) is like playhouse compared to this.... however, I have a lot of work to do. Thanks again!

I would also if you are not familiar with how a "real" studio works, or workflow, that knowing that would be helpful. At least the general methodology of how people have recorded throughout the years. And if you have any questions, this forum in invaluable for getting great answers. Just remember, even if you get frustrated, to ask with respect and you will have people helping you as much as humanly possible.

It is not shortening or lengthining the actual recorded audio. The audio you recorded is "fixed"... as in it is a set duration of time (so if you recorded 2 minutes that audio "clip" will always be 2 minutes unless you do some fancy alterations to it that allow it to be time "stretched/warped"). So that clip will (if unaltered) will have it's own tempo. That would be whatever tempo you, yourself, play it on your instrument as. So if I record a guitar clip at 120bpm... that clip is 120bpm (unless I manipulate it using fancy audio stretching tools). What happens is if you change the tempo in Sonar then the PROJECT tempo changes but your audio clip does not. So it may look like the your clip is getting longer/shorter but what is actually happening is that the "Timeline" in Sonar is stretching or contracting thus making the audio clip take up more or less measures on the timeline. Soooooo... you should be deciding on a tempo for your song BEFORE recording your audio tracks then using the Metronome feature in Sonar to record to. Stick with that tempo throughout the project. You CAN use some of the more advanced feature in Sonar to make it so that audio clips will follow tempo changes (this would normally be done by converting the audio clips into "Groove Clips" or using other time stretching methods) BUT whenever possible you should record live audio at the tempo you want the final product to be in (because stretching digital audio can cause "artifacts" which is essentially audible glitches that are unpleasant and need to be managed/mitigated). Everything I typed above pertains to "audio" clips. Now if you are recording "MIDI" clips that are feeding "Virtual Instruments" then the MIDI clips WILL expand and contract to your tempo changes and then trigger the synths their feeding at the new tempo. That is because that is all done inside the computer and MIDI clips are merely instructions that are much more felxible than real world audio (like a guitar or vocal track recorded with a mic or live input). As for learning the program... Star by opening Sonar and pressing F1. This will open the Help files/Reference Guide. Navigate to the very beginning of these files and look for the "Tutorials". There are a series of tutorials that will walk you through all the common functions in Sonar using content Cakewalk provided with your download/install (if you installed everything correctly). Once you have completed those then you will have a better understanding of how things work. Then I also highly recommend taking a look at the Youtube vids posted above by JonD as well as taking a good long look at the CakeTV section of this site. Good luck and don't feel weird about asking questions here. The only thing is you'll get a lot further if you do these tuts and learn the basic concepts and terminology first (as best you can). That makes it easier to ask questions and have us understand what you are asking. Good luck... and welcome.

Thanks again guys, I have made a short video explaining my whole "now time" bar issue as you can see in the vid, as im recording the bar moves faster than the recording, and during playback, same thing. I hope this makes it clearer... :D oops, can I not post youtube links?

Nope. Not until you have 25 posts. Please list your system specifications (including your audio interface, operating system, Sonar version, etc). Could just be a graphical glitch or you are misinterpreting what is happening.

Alright... never seen that before. Again list your system specs. You may want to call support too (which is a free call in the US... otherwise you can email them). Is it playing back properly though? Like if you record a bunch of tracks do they sync up and sound okay? This seems like a video glitch of some kind.

Here is my system specs, I am just using a simple USB headset mic for recording. using WDM/KS Driver Mode imgur(.)com/bpoqe4K playback is normal, no weird sounds or glitches, it will just still be playing, while the track says nothing is in the location at that time.

Best advice is to pick up a proper audio interface that uses ASIO drivers. In the meantime download a program called ASIO4ALL and use it instead of whatever you have going on now (you set that up in Edit > Preferences > Audio - Devices). ASIO4ALL is a very BAD stopgap solution to this problem but might get your through until you get a proper interface. What exactly are you trying to do? Just record a voiceover or are you trying to record music through yoru headset? If you just want to record your voice for like a tutorial or something Sonar is kind of like swatting a fly with a Buick. Anyway... this seems to be a "latency" issue that is likely coupled with a video glitch. I could not see your system specs and am not copy pasting again (sorry... got other stuff cookin'). Cheers.

I would highly recommend that you get an audio interface that has ASIO drivers, and a mic with XLR connection. It will help a lot when it comes to audio recording. If on a budget, look secondhand. You might not be getting the results you hope for otherwise. And I do not mean to be negative. Best of luck.

I take it you are using the on board sound card to record and play back? If this is so you will have some trouble with it. I recommend a proper audio interface that is meant for DAW use.

Have you ordered your mic already? Is it one of those USB mics? If so cancel the order and get your money back so you can buy a proper interface and microphone. There are quite a few good brands on the market but I'll recommend the Focusrite products (because I use one with Sonar). You can get a Focusrite 2i2 for $100-150 that will have two proper XLR/Line In/Instrument (HiZ) inputs and proper ASIO drivers that work well with Sonar (or any decent DAW). As I said there are other brands out there but that's probably gonna be the best bang for the buck. USB mics and standalone thingies like that generally have horrendous drivers that don't play well with pro audio apps like Sonar (and Sonar can be particularly finicky about such things). USB mics can record okay for basic stuff but the thing is that's just about all they are good for (and barely). Once you start trying to do any kind of more advanced playback, editing, mixing, etc they can't handle it. That's why you need a proper interface. It takes on the extra load required by streaming audio tasks. So as I said... in the meantime you may be able to eke by with ASIO4ALL but if you want to do anything beying simple recording you need an interface. Cheers.

Cheers.
Thanks a lot! This is all very good information! I had no idea is was so involved, but that's cool! very excited to learn.

Heh... yeah unfortunately there's a few hoops to jump through at first to get set up properly with a DAW but once you do... well then I guess there's a bunch more hoops to jump through... but with any luck they're much more fun/interesting hoops because you are making music/getting things done. Cheers.

One of the things to realize is that SONAR (and many DAW's) are very powerful pieces of software. With some additional hardware (audio interface, mics, midi gear and monitors) you basically have a recording studio. Artists have recorded professional albums using SONAR. You are just starting down the path. There is a lot to learn, but it can be done with some effort. There are lot of great people on this forum who have helped me and many others. There are also lots of other resources on the interwebz that can provide information on recording and mixing in general.
