I don't think I'm in a sitution to advise you Kenny, more thinking outloud, but great it kicked off an idea. Melodyne and Sonar I think made the decision easier to buy a bass instead of the samples, being that it can allow me adjust take. So I don''t have to nail it, but just come close. Focus on getting a good tone and some expression. Someone else posted recently, when talking about the harmonic tool. I had been thinking how it could make one of my cheaper flutes sound smoother, pulling back some of the higher harmonics, and adding weight to the lower. He had had similar ideas and succuss trying it it on bass. So when you says it doesn't care about whats on the headstock, seems we can now play with that sound in ways that make us care less too. The conversion stuff bring a whole different perspective. I was quite excited about this idea with upright bass, after disucssing yesterday, more so being that you've had success with it. Thanks for giving it a shot and confirming.

Hi, I tried this with a simple accoustic guitar track in Sonar Platinum, but all I got was a synth track with all B's played in the rythm of the original guitar track. I followed the instructions in the video. Am I doing something wrong here? Thanks, JW

It needs to be set to polyphonic mode. What version are you on? It's not on Essential

What version of Melodyne do you have? If you have Essential, then set it to monophonic for melodic (monophonic) lines. If you have Editor or Studio you can analyse polyphonic (2 notes or more (chords)at a time). If you are getting the same note, it's probably set to rhythmic.

Ah, the melodyne version. That would be Essential. I changed the settings to melodic and indeed it works now. Thanks!

Hello Forum , I would like to take this moment to share with you a file that clearly indicates how good a proper Audio to Midi conversion can sound like with out any editing what so ever Here's a quick run down of what I did ... I took an acoustic recording of an Iconic Master Jazz Guitar Player ( Joe Pass ) playing a Jazz Standard and imported the performance / song into SONAR SPlat ... I converted the stereo track to mono and then i set the volume to where it wasn't pushing too hard with the transients . On my audio's track effects area I placed Midi Guitar Beta there enabled as a softsynth ... Then I opened the synth rack and called up an instance of Strum Session 2 as a simple soft synth .. I set the Strum Session 2 to receive the midi data from Midi Guitar Beta ... What I did next was arm the midi track of Strum Session to enable record and hit r on my computers keyboard . For those of you that will take the time to listen to this MP3 . I did not edit the midi whatsoever because I wanted to be able to compare the midi to audio ... I recorded this in file in real time at the original tempo of the song ... then I panned the audio to one side , the un rendered midi to the other and did an exported a file out of SONAR .. If I had wanted to I could have rendered the midi to audio and then lined that up w the audio ... I did not do that because I wanted to hear it exactly as it was converted to midi w out any edits ... It may be certainly true that this is not audiophile quality ...I know that ...for me this was just an experiment... The Amazing thing is , I think that the route I went in SONAR using what I used did an unbelievable job of processing the guitar performance .. Now that it is Midi , I can do what ever I want with it .... This MP3 is being posted for educational purposes only . http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13311064 I do hope you enjoy the possibility's of what I'm trying to convey here ... all the best , Kenny

You don't even have to play an instrument. You can use your voice to make a pseudo "trumpet" type sound and get pretty good results getting a melody or harmony part down.

Kenny I defiantly get what you are conveying. Its remarkable! Thank you for taking the time for doing this and showing what is possible. Of course you know this will put many a MIDI sequencer out of work!

Hello John , Yes everything is pretty remarkable , Joe's playing , SONAR SPlat , Midi Guitar Beta and Strum Session 2 ... Each individual element has brought a lot to the table with their own unique set of strengths . As far as my own involvement goes , I'm happy i still hold the desire to be teachable and learn new things . John Of course you know this will put many a MIDI sequencer out of work!
Hey you might be right about that one John . I just checked my phones answering machine and all the messages that were on it were for Strum Session 2 ...no messages left for me Have a good one , it was nice talking with you . all the best , Kenny

Yea I used to do this, but had to open melodyne for the conversion. It came in handy for using vocoder to follow a vocal underneath a main vocal. Nice to see its so much more simplified now.

MC7 does not support ARA. If you purchased Melodyne, the included stand alone version could generate MIDI which may be imported into MC7. All current versions of SONAR support ARA. Melodyne Essential is included with Professional and Platinum.

I've been trying this, and sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't (Sonar Professional, x64, Manchester). For example, I earlier I took an analog bass synth clip, dragged it to a new MIDI track, and it worked. It wasn't time-aligned, so I figured I forgot to shift-drag (as it wasn't a zero-aligned part), so I deleted the MIDI track and created a new one, did the same thing, and it came in as one long note. It goes through mixing down audio, creating regions, analyzing audio, and the piano roll view shows one B3 note the length of the clip. Same result with a simple instrument track. I have a feeling it's Melodyne crashing or erroring, I haven't tried rebooting but that's next. Edit: reboot did nothing, update to Newburyport did nothing. When I apply Melodyne alone to that track now, it just comes in as one long note, so I think it's maybe the Essential version that can't handle the tonality in the synth part, which is single-note, but lots of overtones and filters. And when I remove the RegionFX off of that clip, it's a flat clip now. I repeated this for a synth track that's not as rich, and it worked just fine.
