Video: The 140-Track Cakewalk SONAR Session

Brandon Ryan demos Cakewalk SONAR Producer version 8.5 using a Shawn K. Clement remix of Cori Yarckin's "Everything You Said" with 140 tracks, 50 plug-ins and a high-res 800 MB AVI video file—all running simultaneously on a PCAudioLabs Intel Core i7 desktop machine.

You can watch Brandon on MixTV here.

Great stuff, Cakewalk, 64-bit is "for real."

Can you (or PC AudioLabs) tell us about the specs, components, OS and configuration of the system used in the video?

I believe it's an i7 965 with 6GB running dual channel.

Other than what I've already mentioned regarding CPU and RAM, the system is a mix of SSD and standard spindle drives and runs Vista x64 SP2 (which has been tweaked somewhat).

Thanks for the (very) prompt reply, Brandon. Were you using the Cakewalk VS-700R V-Studio I/O (and therefore their audio drivers) for the 96 buffer playback?

and when you're doing stuff on the cutting edge, people get confused and don't understand why some things don't work all the time.

In otherwords, use Audacity, if you don't want bugs.

Too many tracks though....even though many weren't playing all the time!

Absolutely, very impressive.  I'm looking forward to moving to a total 64 bit system.  Sonar, as usual, rocks.  But, if I could ask a tangential question,  how come (and like most of the stuff used as demos on the UAD and other sites) the band/music used on this Sonar demo...er...sucks?  I mean it sounds like myriad other (rock??)bands and the mix is very muddy and there is no (at least for me) wow factor or difference or newness or production values that make me go...whoa!!...well, that's not quite true...it actually did make me go...whoa!!...turn that off.  But Sonar's still the nuts.  Absolutely.

Well, I think that's based on personal preferences.  I personally liked the song they played in the demo.

It sounded well orchestrated, and had that big production feel.  The muddiness comes from it being recorded with a camera mic, and then compressed to hell for internet distribution.

It's funny that so many of you are surprised.  I was doing sessions this size on Sonar 5 (minus the video, with twice as many plugins) on my old dual-core system.  I'd imagine the i7 is probably capable of 3-4 times that workload.

Yeah, but he's doing all that at 96 samples (2.2 ms).  I don't think a Dual Core can do that :-)

The whole project is a mixed bag of live synths, audio tracks and frozen synths. There were probably around two dozen live synths in this project and maybe as many frozen as separate audio tracks. Some synths were frozen due to using audio editing on the resultant rendered tracks and also due to some sounds being part of the composers custom library.

There's also around 50 non-frozen plugins (including some pretty heavy duty ones and even synths as effects).
