I hated to lose Vsampler! I made huge custom librarys with that thing that are just gone in a puff of smoke. I agree that if a developer stops developing the code should be surrendered to Cake so we all don't get left out in the cold. It was quite a long wait to get everything in to 64 bit for me but I finally made it. Some good plugs and librarys got left behind though.

Last I heard Sonar has it's own bitbridge and you can still use it if you bought the VSampler upgrade many moons ago. This is still one of the most underrated samplers.  Sad that it's only 32 bit. The Maz still updates their site (I think). Sonar is one of the last DAWs that still support DX.

When I've upgraded Sonar, I never remove the older versions.  I still have Sonar 8 installed.  The programs take up little space. I keep the other stuff on separate drives.

I just dug up this doc from Kontakt 5:

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/samplers/kontakt-5/specifications/

It appears Kontakt 5 can read VSampler files for versions 1-2.5 for *.vsb files.

I am only reporting that Kontakt thinks it can - I have no confirmation of this.

Yeah VSampler was one of my faves. Dirt simple browsing and editing...still one of the better envelope tools out there. It had a guitar patch I used for EVERYthing. Cake should've just bought it from that dude and taken it over.

I always keep myself flexible, in that I will openly abandon an old product. For example, Algorithmix made one amazing Linear-Phase EQ, and was REALLY expensive. I've managed to contact them a few times to see if they are working on a 64-Bit version of these fine EQ's, but even after all this time, no releases for 64-Bit. It also appears they haven't updated their website in over a year.

They've explained this is still in the works, but I've lost faith. I no longer use the EQs except in Mastering, and that's become rare. I will no longer buy anything from them. I've found that I can get similar results from DMG Audio's EQ's, and for MUCH, MUCH less $.

I personally think it's tragic that a developer will abandon his/her own product that is regarded enough to include in something like Sonar. I would suspect the guy's in prison, perhaps. It would make sense.

Reason 7 no longer includes Dr. REX.

Well you can use REX in OctoRex...

I guess if you plan on shelving something you may not revisit in that software, stems are in order.

But thanks for the good info. A few questions:

- Do you think that the in-channel stuff will at least be reliable to always have a migration path, or is everything always up for grabs?
- Do multiple version of SONAR (2 and 3) play well together installed on the same machine?

P.S. I have >20 yr old copies of Electronic Projects and Studio Recording and have built out mixers, compressors, fuzzstain (not from the books) and other distortion, and several other projects (back when I had more time and less money). You inspired and continue to inspire me. Thanks!

Yes, each version of SONAR installs in a separate directory. All versions of SONAR use a common set of utilities which are backward compatible. Also 32bit and 64bit format may be installed on the same 64bit machine. The 32bit format installs in a completely separate directory tree from the 64bit format.

If you want to get a hold of the developer wouldn't a possible way be to write a plugin called "Bintage Channel" and market it towards Cakewalk customers. (This plugin need not do anything, in fact, it need not be even exist). Report runaway success with it, and wait. Just the members here on this thread could have the front page of the Cakewalk and KVR forums buzzing for days about how Bintage Channel was the best eight-hundred-and-thirty-two dollars(we gotta all stick to the script while discussing specifics) they ever spent. I don't think what I propose even breaks any important laws.
 Good plugins dying is sad.
