Vista 64 and Sonar 8
I'm seriously considering switching from Pro Tools to Sonar 8. It just has everything that I want in PT that Digi isn't delivering. My question is I'd like to move to 64 bit windows to take advantage of the increased RAM for virtual instruments and plugins, etc. I know there is talk about some plugs not being compatible with 64 bit. In Sonar, will I be able to utilize all of the installed ram (8 gb) with 64 bit windows? I know on 32 bit the limit is 4gb installed and windows dwindles that down to 3.something, and then Pro Tools can only use 2 gb of that. I use Mixosaurus drums and it eats through my allowed RAM in no time. Will I notice a big difference, or is there just not enough support for 64 bit to make it worth it at the moment. I don't have many extra plugins, usually use the stock plugs with PT. Thanks. AM

Load 32 Sonar in 64 Vista, use yer plugs.
I'm using SOnar Platinium on a 6 core Lynx Audio machine and a ton of vintage pre-amps/eq's/comps I build for fun and sometimes money, REDD.47/API/Neve I also use the UAD stuff, and also use a Macbook Logic 9 through Apogee...

ORIGINAL: Psychobillybob Load 32 Sonar in 64 Vista, use yer plugs. This will still limit your Sonar and plugs to a little under 4 GB, but at least it won't be competing for address space with other stuff. Also, if you use Rapture, you'll have to do a bit of tweakery there, since their installer will by default install the 64-bit version.

ORIGINAL: Psychobillybob Load 32 Sonar in 64 Vista, use yer plugs. in this case Sonar will be limited to 4GB only. However, you'll still be able to use other 4GB of your 8GB-RAM for other applications at the same time. And another note that works for me: Sonar x64 runs way smoother in terms of CPU multi-processing usage than Sonar x32. So I normally start x64 for the new projects and only if there's something wrong then switching to Sonar x32. There's always something wrong going on with x64 though, especially when many plug-ins are loaded. So I wouldn't recommend using Sonar x64 for live sessions as it might crash your work very unexpectedly.

While installing SONAR you can choose to install both the 64 bit and 32 bit versions. They will both coexist side by side. The 64 bit version of SONAR can address all the RAM on your system. (I believe the limit in Windows X64 is 128 GB of RAM and 14 terabytes of virtual memory). The 32 bit version by default can only address up to a max of 2GB and a max of 3GB with the 3GB flag set in Windows. While using the 64 bit version under X64, any 32 bit plugins run inside bitbridge that handles the translation from the 32 bit to 64 bit address space. Native 64 bit plugins do not require any translation and will be the most efficient. Please also check out our portal that has a lot of resources for 64 bit computing.

Thanks guys. So what I'm understanding is Sonar will still place a 4 gb RAM limit, but I will be able to use a full 4 gb since my other 4 will be taking care of all other computer processes? I run out of RAM pretty quick in Pro Tools when I load VIs. Just want to make sure I have this correct. So my best be is to run Vista 64 and install both versions of Sonar?

Actually if you are running X64 and have more than 4GB installed I believe that a 32 bit program has access to the full 32 bit address space as long as the app is large address aware (SONAR 8 X86 is large address aware) So you should be able to gain access to the entire 4GB of RAM while running 32 bit SONAR. This is one advantage of running an X64 OS even if you are using 32 bit programs. See the following link for the Memory Limits In Windows

Does the switch have to be set in Vista 64? No. Vista handles memory in a different way then XP. The 3Gb limit is still there in Vista 32 but it is handled much more efficiently in Vista. In Vista memory is viewed as a cache to be kept filled with data. XP handles it as something that is filled on request. Properly set up Vista 32 will run more memory intensive apps then XP 32 will with the same memory space. Plus with the added Aero benefits graphics are less intrusive to the CPU giving a little more processing power to the app and also using the memory on the graphics card more efficiently for display.

Getting the full 4GB running Sonar 32 in OS 64 is still a huge plus. On a 32 bit OS, you only get a little over 3GB total for the system, then a good chunk of that is eaten by the OS, services, etc. For most, Sonar 32 on OS 64 will still offer close to double the available memory. I use Vista 64 and have both Sonars installed. While I'd like to go exclusively 64 bit there are a few thing that don't do well in Sonar x64, most notably... A few Spectrasonics plugs (which I like alot) slow the GUI to a crawl; because Sonar 64 doesn't support MIDI out from plug-ins, you can't use EZPlayer with Toontrack products. I've also had little problems using the same file, switching back and forth between the two Sonars.

Correction SONAR X64 does support VST MIDI out. The issue you are referring to only applies while running 32 bit plugins under Bitbridge. With native 64 bit VST's this should work normally. Ok, I think this is exactly what I need. To clarify, with Vista 64 and 8 gb ram... Sonar 64 would be limitless (ie could address all available ram) Sonar 32 would be able to use 4 gb ram while my other 4 gb would go to satisfy OS and other functions. Essesntially this would give me a huge boost over what I'm using now. I run out of RAM after firing up VI drums. I think this is my answer.

I'm not totally clear on that. I thought Sonar 32 should be able to see the whole 4GB that the addressing allows (assuming a person has enough memory to cover the OS, etc and have 4GB or more free), but it sounds like maybe not.... Can Noel or John (or anyone more knowledgeable) clarify?

Yeah, I think thats what is being said and what I understand. 64 bit sonar will see any amount of ram and 32 bit Sonar on 64 bit windows will still see the full 4 gb to use for itself, plus I'll have an additional 4 gb (8 gb ram total) for my system to use. Basically, I get a 2 gb increase in RAM going to Vista 64 and Sonar 32 over using Pro Tools on XP now. Thats what I'd hoped, more RAM.

I went to install the 32 bit version today but I cannot register it as it reminds me that the registration code is already in use (with my installed 64 bit sonar). So, you say both versions will sit side by side but I cannot even open the latter - it just closes. Any thoughts please? Can I really have them side by side, or do I have to uninstall one first? Thanks, Mick.

Its already registered. You don't need to register it again. All you need do is fill in the serial number and then your registration number. I hope you wrote them down and put them in a safe place. You also should have an Email with them.

Keep in mind (and you may already know this) that you need 64 bit drivers for all your hardware (Audio/MIDI interface, PCI/PCIe cards, printer, etc) or else they won't work in Vista 64. Another thing to note is that DX/DXi plugs don't work in 64 bit Sonar, BUT they do work in 32 bit Sonar (even when installed in a 64 bit OS). HTH
