WARNING! - may upset drummers

So the other band members are winding the drummer up, saying he just hits things and doesn't actually know the first thing about playing real melodic musical instruments. He gets quietly upset by this, and goes home after rehearsal with it still playing on his mind. He decides to prove them all wrong, and as he's lying in bed he vows to take up playing not just one, but two melodic instruments the very next day. He gets up early and walks into the music shop, catches the shopkeeper's eye, and says, "Right mate, I'll buy that red trumpet over there, and that piano accordion on the wall too." The shopkeeper looks at the guy with a slightly puzzled expression on his face, rubs his chin for a moment, and then says, "Hmmm, well I'll sell you the fire extinguisher, but there's no way you're having that radiator!"

Hey, I tune my drumset almost daily to fit the song I'm working on. I usually go with something in the key of "Thwack!" or "Clang!", depending on the other instrumentation. But I've been known to use alternate tunings such as "Thud!", "Kaboom", or "Ding-a-ling-a-ling" when the piece called for it. In fact, I recently worked on a complicated jazz piece that required me to tune up from a "Boom, thwack, boom-boom thwack" to a quite unusual, albeit inspiring, "Oomph, boing, oomph-oomph, boing." Grrr....

Years ago playing in a corporate band somebody let off a fire extinguisher and the drummer got splashed. So he just got up from his kit in the middle of the number, walked across the dance floor and just laid the guy out with a punch to the head. Then he turned round, walked back to his kit and carried on playing. True story.

Drummers have a great since of beats and staying in rythm. It cant hurt to have some melodic structure in your mind control. It can bennifit the band to have a drummer who knows melodies so the drummer can chime in and suggest certain rythmic changes alone adding a bit more depth to your songs. It cant hurt. I play all of my own instruments and sing all of my vocal parts but I cant play the drums. Thank God for drum programs, I can do that. So you do what ever it takes for you. Anything that you can bring to the table musically is only a plus.

Check out Sabastion Bach new song Slap that Bit-- the guy has reinvented himself and now he is touching on a whole different type and style of music that is reaching a whole new audiance. dont know if I got the song title write but you cant miss that one word. Sorry Gals let it be known I dont like the use of the word toward any women.

Then there was the poor old drummer who froze to death outside the local cinema.

He'd been waiting outside to watch the latest film "Closed for the Winter"

Kind of sounds like the joke where the hot babe went into the sex shop and bought the cashier's thermos....

Don't be makin' fun of drummers. They are the basis for any good band. Check out Terry Bozzio on the Zappa Plays Zappa DVD. Un-freakin'-believable. If you're making fun of your drummer, it could be because he sucks.
