starise thanks man.... appreciate the comments, very postive.
purple multiple listens, thanks! a lot of times, it does take more than one... for things to become more obvious, for choices of pan, mix, eq, all of it starts to come together. there are a LOT of layers in this one, but because it is such an aggressive mix, it can start to sound all one level..... i'm working on new songs now, with more dynamics WITHIN songs that really are just flat out. old55 appreciate the listen!

There's no denying you've got the playing, writing and production chops down.

bapu thanks man. so, translation's good on your end? this is an older mix, by going on 3 years now..... i've learned a lot since then, and i'm dialing in my translation in my room. or at least, i think i am, comparing my new stuff to this, is kind of what i'm in the middle of doing. i'm running freq analyzers, i've added treatment, i've moved all of my room around now, added the ARC2 thing, just a bunch of stuff going on that changes what i've done before.

Sounds good here on crappy pc speakers - what a lot of music gets listened to on. Headphones are an even bigger crap shoot for quality - I wouldn't worry too much about trying to make it translate over many kinds of headphones. There is too much difference, esp. when you throw in ear buds. It is all mid range then. The toms were really punchy - on these speakers I couldn't hear the kick. That may be due to vinyl mastering - it seems to drop off below 50 Hz. But everything sounds pretty clear. It is funny - if you are mixing on good speakers one tends to push the mids a bit from habit. Sounds great and separate. Once on small or ear speakers, some (or a lot) of that mid clarity gets masked. Maybe it is just a trick from not having the bass to hold it all apart. Anyway, pretty much a first world problem. Excellent song and mix whether you bump that up a dB or pull this back a little to the center. It will still sound great. Keep working until you are happy, tho. I hate going back and hearing a finished song and thinking "If only I ...". @

And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Sounds great to my ears. Had to listen again as I was too busy rocking out on the 1st go :) Through my ATH-M50 Guitar wise it is all crystal clear. Bit more snap on the snare, and a little more clarity on the bass gt. Really good rocking tune and sweet solos. Please vote for me! AT thanks for responding on this one.... headphones, yes, they are all over the map. i have discovered, tho, that the midrange is fairly typical, so it's always about the highs and lows, and how they dip and peak and rolloff, there is a LOT of disparity about translation there.... kick is tricky. you look at a lot of modern mixes, the kick sits peaking at 100hz. most speakers can't reproduce below about 70hz anyway, and the problem is, if you don't tame your low freqs, that when you DO get played on a full-range system, it sounds tubby in the bottom. to hear kick on PC speakers, you have to add a LOT of high end info, and a lot of peak around 2khz, to get it to sound right i decided a while back, that i did not favor that sound, and would mix to a fairly full range system, with rolloff around 60hz and 17k. so, this is a fairly old mix... and my new mixes should translate better on the same system, at least i hope so. gusrogers thanks gus.... you know, this particular song, was the first song i mixed using Superior Drummer. and, i mixed it thru the internal mixer...... now, these days, i output the RAW wav files of each part of the kit, and mix them from scratch with very little FX, a bit of EQ, and a bit of compression. i've come to like the sound of a natural kit, over the highly produced sound that is more common now..... everything you suggested, is exactly what i've been working on, on my newer mixes. this is good info, thanks.
