I really like the scratchpad feature. Take notes, Cakewalk! I'd love this in Sonar.

Looks like they took quite a few things that Sonar has in it as well. Interesting to see how these develop off each other.

FX Chains in the way they are done, AND!!! the multi synth control on a single track is a major jump forward.

Downloading the demo which I had no interest in before because of the limitation on multi synths, same as Sonar.

If it gets much better than this, will have to even retire Reaper. The flexibility of ver 3 in this aspect is now state of the art without having to resort to third party help. Presonus moved to the head of the pack overnight.

Anybody know if the authorization is online activation or if it is a simple key code or serial like Sonar.

John

Yup.  I believe Reaper is, for the most part, history for me.  I've got a couple of legacy projects from a few years ago so I'll keep it installed in case I want to fool around with them again or test Toontrack products in that environment.

I've got the V3 demo installed and I'm very impressed with it, so far.  It's a bit hard to get used to after working in PT and SONAR because of how the GUI works but once you learn where everything is and how to mouse around and change zoom levels, you remember how good the audio bending is.

Re: Watching Studio One 3 online preview 2015/05/20 22:04:40 (permalink)
Thank you Kite for clarifying this. More than generous allowance from the devs.

A guitar banger, vocalist  can do all and everything within Sonar. Studio One 3 has some nice tweeks, but nothing revolutionary for audio input that would raise a concern.

My problem has been an outcast crying in the wilderness over the fringe requests to gang multiple synths in series on a single track. Sonar, please get with the program and allow us this option. Years upon years of requests falling on deaf ears until this function, and the critical importance of the request is listened to and acted upon by someone else.

To this point, only Reaper sailed beyond Sonar in this aspect. Not that you could not accomplish chained synths, but such a bloody chore of cloning tracks, pasting midi files. Totally defective.

Objective and no flame, no fan boy analysis is that Reaper flew beyond where no Sonar had gone before. Reaper could gang synth after synth on one track, something that Sonar and every other thing from ProTools to PowerTracks could not realize.

Limit in Reaper achieving perfection is the pan function of a synth in multiple episodes. To realize this fundamental ability, it was necessary to load third party softwares (Energy XT, Console, now P&P Chainer) to support real stereo expression.

Mighty Allah, it looks like Presonus Studio One 3 has finally crossed the threshold, doing the task all inside the DAW. Such a beautiful breath of fresh air for the piano player.

Will never dump Sonar, but Presonus has broken through the frustrations, limitations for keyboard players. Like they said, they listened to their users and did the fix.

Glorious day for keyboard players. Worth any price for this gift.

Cheap as hell, so trying the educational route for a discount. Don't know what it will cost, but worth it ultimately. Thanks Presonus.

Yeah, I fall into that category...   So it's a $200 upgrade which means looking for a sale at some point in the future.  Bummer, since some of the new features do look good.  Just not $200 worth of good, for me, though I'll certainly be keeping an eye on how others make out.

I hear ya, Tak.  I use S1 too little which is another reason why the cost is too high for me, despite those nice new features.

S1 V3 is a huge step up in functionality over S1 V2 IMO.

I love the multi-instruments, one note chords, new XT Synth, Arranger and Scratch Pad features and the new sizable mixer. The custom color scheme is really nice as well. They put a lot of effort into this release and new videos help explain the major new features.

The multi-instrument feature has been something I too have wanted for years. I have been duplicating tracks and then assigning a different VST to the 2nd or 3rd duplicate track and then blending them through the mixer. With S1's new feature, all of that is really simple and laid out very well. Lot's of options using just one track.

The upgrade at $149 is much better value than Sonar X3 producer to Platinum, in terms of added features and nearly 30gig in new content.

Re: Watching Studio One 3 online preview 2015/05/21 00:20:03 (permalink)
@ BobF - There is cross grade pricing from other DAWs. It's $299.00

Although I have S1 - 2 Professional, I've since skipped any updates and went with Cubase 7 - now up to 8 in the summer of 2013 - mainly because after countless repeated requests for Presonus to answer the call of many of us to do something more within the confines of their MIDI department, [or rather lack thereof], they continually ignored us - through each and every update and version - and it looks like they've done it yet again.

I see absolutely nothing new in the MIDI department, whereas Cubase is a MIDI monster.

Seems a little odd to ignore the MIDI requests and yet boast about Kontakt support.

An upgrade price for me chimes in at $185.52 CAD.  I'm gonna have to have a door to door salesmen who'll not only vacuum my floors, but also leave a Bible or 2 on the table in order to sell me on this to lay out almost $200 more bills.

I'm one of those who used to ask for improvements in the MIDI department, and also frequently posted feature requests. If version 3 still doesn't have a MIDI panic button and if the clip colors and names are still not linked between shared MIDI clips, the DAW is still not good enough for me. I also need percentages for humanizing MIDI notes. Not just "Humanize" and "Humanize Less."

I use Studio One exclusively for the Mastering/Project View, and so far I haven't seen any enhancements in 3.0 for that feature.
Really, it's so good, I can't see what they could add without "damaging" it.

So I'll stick with 2.6 Producer for now.

On first glance the things that pop out (in envy) to me are:
  • fx chains - not that most DAWs don't have them already, but the UI looks pretty sweet, almost like Reaktor. And, they have splitters, which is what I've wanting for the ProChannel for some time.
  • Scalable UI - S1 has always been a little ahead with their UI tweaks (you can rotate the PRV!)
  • Arranger Track - Cubase had it first, but this looks way more elegant than the cheat of using the otherwise not so great Matrix view for this purpose.
  • Scratch Pad (or whatever it's called) - I'm not sure if this isn't quite similar to Mix Recall or not, have to look into it some more
  • Browser - looks like they've implemented their own metadata for finding stuff, cool...but first you gotta tag EVERYTHING right?
  • Multi-instrument sounds - this sounds cool, especially being able to layer split with multiple synths.

OK, now I'm intrigued.... the multi midi layering (multi instrument per track) shown at 1 hour 10 minutes in...with independent effects, arps, repeater, etc as well as independent keyboard ranges is really cool and creative... me likes a lot...

However, it seems like you can only do two instruments from the  live show... they didn't mention more than the two they showed and this wouldn't make sense if you can do oooodles.... like the effects splitting, which they clearly pointed out it was endless...

The concept is totally awesome and well done but if only two I'm disappointed....
The scratchpad and rearranging features are also way cool...

Bakers!  Get on it!  I love Sonar and can't imagine shifting because of all of Platnium's strengths... but this is really cool and creative and lots of folks want this...

Though Sonar Platinum is my favorite all-around DAW, there are some unique/intriguing features in S1v3.
JRR Shop has the upgrade from v2 Pro to v3 Pro for $126.65 using code twitter15 (15% off).
Ordered yesterday... still waiting for the SN.

I loaded up 7 instruments for fun and could not find a limit listed in Help.
I don't think there is a limit on how many you can add but your memory will take a big hit if you go crazy with it!

I just checked the new videos on YouTube, and, while the GUI is a big improvement from the previous version, I actually found it too black to concentrate and also couldn't recognize pane separators. Sonar's GUI is very neutral IMO and that's probably why I find it easy to use and concentrate on working. Also, I found none of the new features relevant to my workflow. Still, I'm quite happy for S1 users. They waited too long, so they deserve the excitement.
