I figured it would increase like everything else.
Now that prices have dropped with them always being on sale they'll make it up one way or another.

    When does it take affect?

    heres the email I received

    Dear Valued Waves User,

We're writing to let you know that, effective January 1, 2013, Waves Update Plan will have a new cap of $300 per product, regardless of how much time has passed since your coverage was last updated. Like an extended warranty which you can buy only once you need it, Waves Update Plan may be renewed at any time; however, if you renew within one month of expiration, you'll save 20% off the regular price, effectively making the new cap $240.

With Waves Update Plan, you'll receive new plugins as they're added to your bundles. Plus, you'll receive, retroactively, all the plugins that were added since your coverage was last active. Additionally, for every dollar you spend Waves Update Plan, you'll earn credit toward the purchase of any product or upgrade. Plus, all new products and upgrades automatically include one full year of Waves Update Plan coverage. As a Waves Update Plan member, you'll receive the technical guidance they need from experts who know Waves tools inside and out. Regardless of DAW host, plugin platform, or computer operating system, Waves Tech Support has got you covered.
You get the latest Waves versions, which means total compatibility with all major audio hosts and operating systems. You can move between Mac and PC, from Pro Tools to Logic to Nuendo and beyond - and back again.
No matter how many non-overlapping products you own or how long their coverage has been inactive, you'll never pay more than $300 per account to re-activate your coverage for one full year, starting today.
For every dollar you spend on Waves Update Plan coverage, you'll receive a Waves voucher toward the purchase of any product or upgrade. Plus, all new products and upgrades include one full year of coverage.
For overlapping or identical products, the cap is $300 per bundle. And for most Waves bundles, yearly coverage is less.
You don't have to renew your Waves Update Plan coverage every year - renew it only when you want to. And when you do - it'll still cost only $300 or less.
With Waves Update Plan, you receive new plugins as they're added to your bundle. Plus, you'll receive all the plugins that were added since your coverage was last active.
Get the technical guidance you need from experts who know Waves tools inside and out. Whatever your host, whatever your platform, Waves Tech Support has got you covered.
    Best Regards,
    The Waves Team

    Thanks for posting.
I haven't received that 'good news' & email yet.

So they're touting the $40.00 increase as a sale for early renewal while
an additional $60.00 fee is added on top of that for letting it lapse over a full year.

    Nice......

Yea...that "per product" thingy always puzzles me as I have many individual plugs as well as a handful of "bundles".  Last fall I "re-wupped" everything I had up for two years through wavesuniverse IIRC and it was only $200 or so.  And the only reason I did that was to have everything 64bit and V9.  I guess if you're like ol Bapsi and own Mercury it's an OK deal...but it has a funny smell to it.  Or is that just my upper lip?

I just got one more year for $175 (Audiodeluxe.com) and my current WUP expires in two days, so I'll beat the Jan 1 deadline (this year).

Ya, I got great value for my first year WUP (considering it was thrown in on the purchase price of V8 Mercury )

Yeah, I too am bepuzzeled here.  I have several plugins that were purchased for $49 or $99 and several bundles.  It seems wrong to charge $300 for each of these $49 updates.  I had thought that the cap was cummulative like your experience over at wavesuniverse when you got everything wupped for one price.  This increase will bring a lot of ill will for Waves.  However, nothing anyone can do about it as they have had this wupp thing forever and now they just upped the wuppng.

cecelius, WUP is not $300 each, it's a $300 cap depending on what you own.

IOW, since I own Mercury (everything but the SSL stuff) my cap is $300.

Also, you can get your WUP at a discount at audiodeluxe.com. With a cap of $200 this year, I only paid $175.

Thanks bapu for this info.  WHat you say is what I always thought.  However I was responding to our ol friend's reference to "per product".  I am glad you helped me understand it a little better.  Also, I checked over at wavesuniverse and their price is just a little better than that of audiodeluxe.

I guess one day I may get that Mercury and have it all, except for their SSL--I never understood why that is not included in the Mercury deal.

One of the bonuses of the WUP Plan...

For every dollar you spend on Waves Update Plan coverage, you'll receive a Waves voucher toward the purchase of any product or upgrade. Plus, all new products and upgrades include one full year of coverage.

So , if you pay the $240, then you get $240 voucher good for your next bundle purchase...

I will definitely be purchasing the WUP, as it will put me MUCH closer to Platinum from Gold...

    Cheers!

I just bought my first 2 Waves products. One for $50 and one or $70.
Should I be worried about this (I don't really understand it) or should I ignore it and hope it goes away like my Credit Card bill?

Only if you believe you'll need to upgrade in the near future...it's basically insurance for you plugins...if Waves releases a new
version of your plugins, you get them for free, rather then having to pay an upgrade price.

The benefit is that you can use what you pay for the WUP to buy new stuff...it gives you up to 50% off bundles...
You get a Waves Voucher for every dollar you spend on the WUP which is good for 25% off plugs or 50% off bundles,
    AND you get upgrade insurance...

Like cclarry said with one more point--that is you only get support from Waves support if you have up to date WUP.  Usually this is not an issue because you have probably worked out the kinks to get a plugin working within the first year, but if Waves eventually issue a new version to work with let's say Windows 9 (in a couple of years) you might need that version and you only get that update if you have paid your WUP.  Of course you can wait and pay when you need it, but it appears that waiting means that you will have to pay the premiium $300 fee (or whatever wavesuniverse.com or audiodeluxe.com are discounting those for in the future).

One other reason to update is if the newer versions of Windows need updated drivers from Waves.  So let me ask:  does the current v9 version of Waves work with Win8?  I have not updated to Win8 yet and probably won't until I see a need to do so--Win7-64bit is working great for me.  So any issues with Win8?  If not, then I may wait to WUP.

I've been using Sonar X2 and Waves V9 on Win 8 since release.  There have been some minor issues.
The only one I've had was adding a Waves plugin to the FX Bin in a project created in X1 and opened
under X2.  X2 would crash every time I tried to add a plugin to the bin.  This was resolved by
saving the file under a new name in X2 and then re-opening the project.  All issues disappeared.
Even though my completed X1 projects had Waves V9 plugs in them already, those would play just fine.
I have been using all my Waves plugins under X2 in new projects without issue, although many here
    have reported some issues.

I believe X2 under Win 8, with Waves V9, and even with my 32 bit plugs, has been solid for the most part.

    Cheers!

I know its just me, but waves is the biggest disappoint ever.
The forum is full of whining when Cake charges $99 for the latest Sonar.
And waves "caps" WUP at $300?
    What a deal!
I love the spinning "W" while I wait for it to load.

FabFilter and TRacks; just me, just sayin'...

    I never even downloaded v9.

...or, if you decide to sell them.  My understanding is that your WUP has to be current before Waves will allow a second-hand sale.

cecelius, WUP is not $300 each, it's a $300 cap depending on what you own.

IOW, since I own Mercury (everything but the SSL stuff) my cap is $300.

Also, you can get your WUP at a discount at audiodeluxe.com. With a cap of $200 this year, I only paid $175.

Hate to be the barer of bad tidings..but it is PER PRODUCT.

I just checked my WUP on Waves site and the price was $272.00

I own bundles and individual plugins, hence the price.

If I removed Vocal Rider and the Free One Knob Louder then the price dropped to $182

So it is a PER PRODUCT price with a (current) $200 CAP PER PRODUCT, NOT for EVERYTHING.
That's why Baps only paid $175...he owns Mercury, considered ONE PRODUCT.

I'm currently waiting on a quote from AD ..to see what they want...

Sounds like he made a mistake & didn't check the box-
'I hereby confirm that I run all products on one machine at a time.'
Doing that will drop  the price down quite a bit.

If you have 2 separate purchases of the same plugin it should show up in your account. As long as you check the 'one machine' box the price will be based on which ones you select to upgrade.

Do you need to upgrade 2 licences of the same plugin though?
If you need  licenses on another computer you can place the authorizations back to the cloud, then re-download to another computer.

Yeah, I saw that. Bummer!  But, I don't update much. The last time was the leap to Waves v5.2, and now I'm on v9 as of two weeks ago.

If you only have Gold then the WUP will only be about $80.00....
The only advantage at this point would be that you would be covered for 2 FULL years...

My WUP just for Gold is $72.00....but I have a lot more...so I would be at the Cap of (currently) $200 ($171.99 @ Waves Universe and I can't get a quote from Audio Deluxe)

I'm sure the Gold price will go up along with the WUP in January...
