We Drift Apart - feat. G. Reynolds & R. Robbins
A while back Gary (geeare1) posted an instrumental called We Drift Apart <- Original Instrumental Version. I asked if I could provide lyrics to and Gary graciously said yes. Then I approached Robby with rev 1 of the lyric (with almost no melody to speak of). Fortunately he was not feeling it. Determined to get Robby to sing the song I went back to the drawing board and did a rewrite of the lyric and this time I did the best I could to "sing" the melody I was hearing in my head. And he was able to work with that. Phew!!! Without any further fanfare we present: We Drift Apart <--- 2013 Version Soundcloud Link Verse 1: Day after day, life gets in the way And we realize there's no reason to stay That's when we find, no more peace of mind And all the love we had gets left behind Chorus: We drift apart From the love in our heat While living together each playing our part In all of this pain, falling down like rain Making a heavy heart We drift apart (Driftin' apart) Verse 2: A time for joy, a time to cry There are no real answers, no one can say why That's when we find, no more peace of mind And all the love we had gets left behind Repeat Chorus: Cast: Vocals - Robby Robbins Guitars, Drums, Percussion, Piano, Strings & Organ - Gary Reynolds Bass and Production - Ed "Bapu" Kocol On a personal note I want to thank Gary for allowing me to write the lyric and melody for this song and Robby for putting up with me on this process. Thanks guys. In the spirit of Gary's initial song being downloadable, this version is allowed to be downloaded in 24/44.1 WAV format. Enjoy. Robby re-tracked the vocals and I re-mixed it slightly on 17 Feb, 2013. Another slight remix on 28 Feb 2013 (lowered the triangle level).

Really nice tune guys, and beautifully performed and sung. I know a lot of work went into this and it really paid off. Great job.

great performances from all. Ed, i definitely heard more than one chord in this. Rob, you are one of life's great natural singers. Gary, last time i was around, all your stuff was unbelievably perfect acoustic guitar stuff. unfortunately, you're just as good on electrics...

Vocals are always the most difficult to get right. Sorry, but at times they made me cringe. I can't really put my finger on it but it was either the mix or the tonality of the vocals. The Hawaiian guitar gave the song kind of a drunken sort of vibe to it. The little dinging noise was annoying, is it really needed? Overall though, it was better than the original instrumental.

Nicely done gang. Not my cuppa tea musically but it sounds lush and full, and Robby's voice is out front clearly where it should be. Musical bed is beautiful. There's something odd happening at 1:17 though, sounds like a couple of syllables got chopped? Ah, it happens again later (2:52). I think there's a bad edit there, and it's been copied over.

Nice job.... I loved the steel. Who did the steel? It has a kind of Maverick's sound and feel. The Mavericks tend to be one of my favorite bands that never really made it as big as they should have...... Desert Rose is another band that didn't get the acclaim they deserved for the talent they had. The song is written well. kudo's to all involved.

I listened over the weekend but wanted to let it stew in me for a while before listening again to confirm what I felt the first time. I loved the intro so much. I like the chorus quite a bit. But two things are bugging me: The snare drum is waaaay too snappy and punchy that it distracts and seems out of place with the rest of the instruments. Robby's almost-instantaneous vibrato from the get-go on the first verse really made things seem old-fashioned, like Englebert-old fashioned, so not retro, but cornball. He's a much better singer with better sensibilities than that.

Nice country ballad, I would like to see the words in print as it's just easier to follow the first time through. I liked this, but upon listening to the instrumental version I liked that too. I look forward to hearing Robbies version as well. I thought it could be just a touch faster, although the instrumental felt a little more right, at least the groove did. Nice lyrics - Great song title for the genre for sure. It just sounds like a hit. Good song Gary. I think I favor the instrumental backing for some reason... Daryl

Ed did a good job editing my performance to the way he wanted it. But I'm going to re-record the vox the way he wanted them over the next few days (Hopefully, if I'm not coming down with the boy's cold). He'll repost the re-recorded version. Then in a few weeks, a re-re-release with the version I heard when I did it. You people may want to be drifting apart from this song by the time we're done! LOL! When you deal with artists and producers, people have strong opinions. (And by people, I mean people like Ed? HE'S DEMANDING!! And also, he has a ways to go to catch up to Mr. Markno999, HE'S A TASKMASTER!!! He's like a corrupt guard in a Turkish prison... I feel like I'm reliving Midnight Express when I work with that guy...) I try to understand that everyone does not see the world as do I :-) Which is probably a pretty damn good thing! hahahahah :-) Again, as Ed said, "It is NOT a competition!" It's just two different views from two different points of view. But I'm going to first try to make his version better by re-recording it (5 tracks!)

Sorry, but this production really ruins a great tune and performance. I would think it might be a good idea, but trying to work a vocal into an existing instrumental track like this is just not working for me.

Robby, if you are going to re-record the vocals, might I suggest a shift in style? I do not know what Ed wants, but I can tell you what I heard for a few fleeting moments here and there, and that was a very rich Danny Elfman style (think Nightmare before Christmas - forget the content and listen to the tone (he sings the lead characters parts)). Lose the false vibrato. You know better. Your natural vibrato will express itself when appropriate.

Yeah, there are some competing styles for this piece? And competing ideas on if there should be vocals. I'm re-singing this for Ed? I would have tonight? But after tonight's "State of the Union?" I spent most of the evening cleaning my collection... (of 45s (records)) And other speeds as well? It really wasn't a false vibrato? But it seems to have bothered a few people, so I may try to control it better on the re-recorded versions. I'm a little shaky on vibrato personally? I keep going back and fourth on the issue.
