Here's another twist on the comparative merits of different approaches: I really like Steve Reich, especially his thing from the early 70s, Drumming. The way that, and a few of his other things were written was that he'd have a handful of very very simple short parts, and they would come in and out and change slightly according to a set of rules he would work out in advance. So the rules essentially write the music for him. Now Steve Reich absolutely knows his music theory. Yet there he is, essentially whacking up a load of loops, with a deliberate disregard for where they might end up. Indeed, no two performances of Drumming are quite the same, there's a ton of deliberate ambiguity in it, and the conductor and the performers have plenty of latitude to change stuff. Yet at the same time, it has an absolutely recognisable character; you always know what it is when you hear a version of it. Now, none of this is because of a lack of ability; he's deliberately chosen to do this. But it's pretty much the exact opposite of your traditional "musicianship" he's working with. He's exploring what happens when you deliberately take the process of concious decision making out of it and just let whatever happens happen. Of course, if the end result was just horrible, then none of this would count for much. But Drumming is, to me at least, absolutely mesmerising and beautiful. I think this is an example of why "X approach is valid, but Y approach is not" is always going to be flawed. The only thing that counts is the end result.

If all that mattered were the results... Mr Reich could have easily made a cassette tape of the Ghanian drumming he was studying and inspired by. If all that mattered were the results. But in fact what really mattered was that a western academic had traveled abroad and assumed ownership of an ancient "idea" and then the academic was able to make a formal presentation to people who choose to be entertained by a recital hall performance. Other wise, a cassette tape of the guys playing the same thing in Ghanna surely would have sufficed... if indeed, all that matters is results. regards, mike

I wonder if we will have more information about the innards of X1C? just to try and get back on topic. I figure that when the cakewalkers gave the timeline for X1C they were just "round about" type of comments rather than specifics. it may have been their hope to have info available for publication by the end of July but haven't been able to meet that objective. Big deal. I think they really need a bullseye with this update. and I'd reckon they do too. I'm sure that when they're good and ready we'll hear about it.

As for Sonar – I like it because it has the tools to do whatever I want. ~ProjectM Which is why it's greatest strength is also it's greatest weakness. As a church musician, I know the frustration and impossible task of pleasing everyone. All in all, Cake has done a good job of balancing that (hang in there Cake and keep improving!) I own R & S1 on my machines but still find myself coming back to SPE/X1. Here's trusting Cake keeps it's head on straight and hold true to their calling! Which BTW has to change with the times to remain relevant - no?

I just have a gut feeling that we are going to hear something in the next few days and I'm getting really excited. I went back and read the X1c announcement here: http://www.cakewalk.com/P...f-SONAR-X1-has-arrived This really is a Big Deal. I read it as bug fixes, new features and enhancements , and a webinar. Plus, the bakers are asking for Our feedback about the topics to cover in the webinar. I see this as a very positive opportunity. I can't think of another product I own that has provided so many Free tutorial videos and the reps actually participate in the forums. Other perks include some of the best tutorial info available by industry experts: Scott Garrigus - Sonar X1 power book and upcoming DVD tutorials Craig Anderton - Advanced Workshop video just say'in, I'm Really Excited Kind regards, Rick

That's fine. But this idea you seem to have that you can do a couple of seconds googling and pass off what you've misunderstood as a definitive and informed position is just... embarrassing.

Here you go John: http://alimomeni.net/file...frican-Polythythms.pdf I found a nice well written paper for you at the bottom of a wiki page. This paper supports your assessment of my comments. My Ghanian friends however, laugh every time this subject is brought up... they have explained to me that the layers of misunderstanding seem to multiply with every analysis because every western analyst seems to begin by assuming the Ghanians are a bunch of villagers that can't have the same conversations and sense of imagination that academics indulge in. I tried getting analytical with my friends and they were kind enough to give me the time to figure it out. regards, mike

Drum Circles? Is that like when an image of a Ludwig Black Oyster kit appears in a cornfield? This wasn't near Stonehenge was it? PS: I think my ol pal musicman was referring to the fact that there's a lot of throw pillows and beanbag chairs downstairs. And flowers on the wall...but it don't bother me at all.
