Weird things you did or thought as a kid

Every now and then I recall my trash hoarding phase. I must have been about 6 or 7 when for some reason I started feeling sorry for garbage and couldn't bear to throw it out. So the drawer next to my bed was full of sandwich crusts, orange peel, candy wrappers and other crap that ended up going moldy until my mother opened it, said "WTF" and put and end to the whole business in one fell swoop despite my hysterical protests. Boy I really did feel sorry for that trash.

Going back 2 or 3 years before this, I had a very strange concept of money. I honestly thought that if something was $10 and you only had $7, you'd buy it and they'd give you $3 change. You can't get more ass backward than that.

At around the age of 9 I developed a head flicking habit. I think it started when I had a long fringe which would get in my eyes and I would flick my head back to get it out - but when I got my hair cut I found myself flicking a phantom fringe away. I couldn't stop. My mother would say "WTF are you doing, stop that at once" and I would sit there on the brink of bursting until I had to leave the room for an epic head flicking session to make up for lost time. It all came to a head one day when after a particularly violent flick I put my neck out. I tried to tell my mother that it had happened at school when I fell against a goal post but she immediately saw right through it and said "you've been flicking again haven't you." She was like Sherlock friggin Holmes a lot of the time.

My Brother seems to be able to remember every detail of our childhood.  The level of detail often shocks me.  Once he mentions it, some of those details come back to me, but I still wonder...how the heck did you remember that.

Me, I can barely remember where I left my car keys from day to day, let alone what shoes I was wearing in 1971.

I'm sure I had plenty of weirdness in my youth due to losing both my parents in separate accidents at a very early age. But your post made me remember two oddities of a good friend when he was about 7 or 8. One was he thought electricity could leak from the sockets in his room and so placed cups beneath them to catch it. Another was when we played, along with many of our classmates, in a young people's string ensemble. He grew weary of having to retune his violin constantly so one day he got it in tune and simply glued the pegs with model airplane glue. Much to the chagrin of our flighty music teacher.

I don't remember these, but my mom and grandparents told me...

I got drunk for the first time shortly after I learned to walk when I emptied my grandfather's glass while he was in the bathroom.

I shaved for the first time when I was 3 or 4. Only, I shaved across my face, from left to right. Apparently there was a lot of blood...

Stuff that I actually do remember.

Around age 6-8, I used to play Barbie with my little neighbour. The rules of the game were simple - whatever piece of clothing Barbie took off, she had to take off to. Comparative anatomy.

Around the same time, I kicked my best (and only) friend out of the house with a fly swatter because he was talking too much while I was trying to write a story.

Age 9 - I destroyed all my paintings and drawings in a fit of artistic despair, crying that I was worthless as an artist and that I'd never amount to anything...

Age 10, my mother forced me to take dance lesson. I didn't like my little partner but I fell in love with her mother. I had convinced myself that her husband didn't deserve her and started making plans to rescue her, so that we could run away together and "make love". It didn't quite work, but they actually filed for divorce 2 or 3 years later...

Age 10, I brought my mother a container of strawberries and flowers. She didn't seem quite excited as I was when I told her that I got them from the cemetery, across the street. Me I ate strawberries there all the time...

Then I became a teenager and started to do some really odd stuff...

Well after eating our cookies we wanted more and had seen him stash the other ones so I got on my brother's shoulders and reached up to the shelf and, well, we ate a good deal of them. This was a very large ingestion of strong Moroccan hashish for any stoner, let alone a couple of brats. You can imagine my dad's horror when he realized. I don't remember much about it but apparently I kept him up all night asking questions about space while my brother snored in bed. We were kept off school the next day. Best not to have your kids show up to school stoned, I guess.

Did similar things with the girl up my street when I was even younger, about 4. Absolutely no idea of why I was doing it except a vague thrill which I didn't understand. I used to follow her into the bathroom, and sometimes I would shine a torch up her skirt. LOL! What a little perv. Also, my mother worked Saturdays at a fashion boutique in the city and I would hang out there all day with her sometimes. I had this very healthy interest in the mannequins in the window and for thrills would put my hand up their dresses. In fact I even have a photo of me doing it....

The funny thing is that my mother too worked in a boutique for a few years. Needless to say I had a fascination for the naked mannequins in the back store and also those cut outs that advertised bras and lingerie.

I really don't remember going through what Freud calls a latency stage - if I did, it was probably shorter than a commercial break.

Well just to the right of those mannequins in the photo was a large stack of Elle and Cosmopolitan magazines. Believe me, I had a good pop at those once I was done with the mannequins

I bet most here (male) remember picking up through those big catalogs that sell everything and flicking straight to the bra and pantie section. Then some kid would come to school with a page he'd ripped out of his mom's catalog, it would be the shower section and you could just make out a woman's nipple behind the frosted glass. EXCITING!

Nowadays kids are just logging onto Pornhub. I kind of feel sorry for them in a way.

Watching some 2 year old play games on an iPad during Thanksgiving dinner, it really struck me that nowadays, kids seem to require a constant flow of external stimulation, whereas, as I remember it, we had to use our imagination to make things interesting.

The funny thing is that, just before we went to that dinner, a friend had posted a picture of this toy on FB:

And I remember thinking - "what the heck was that supposed to be? what were we supposed to do with that?" I guess we really had to use our imagination...

I was a bit too old for that particular toy, but I remember my younger cousin had one, and we'd basically re-purpose that, use it as a console for an imaginary spaceship or whatever...

Later on, indeed, those Sears catalogues stimulated that imagination of mine.

I loved coconut so much I snagged one of those big bags from our kitchen and took it to my room. Munched on it for a couple of months as I recall.
Still have a thing for coconut.

I also wired an ac cord to a 6 x 9 speaker cause I thought that was enough to make an amp like my big brother had...

Oh lord I just remembered another one....

When I was 8 or so my friend David Scott and I decided that it would be a great idea to put on an exhibition of dog poop in his bedroom. So we went around the neighborhood picking up every specimen we could find with a couple of lolly sticks, took it back to his place and arranged it on pieces of tissue paper on his bedroom table, complete with labels indicating which breed we guessed it came from. You can imagine his mother's horror when she came in the room. I was from that day forward banned from his house and we were forbidden to play together. Seemed like a great injustice at the time but looking back I think it was the right move.

I remember as a boy the famous radio race call during the `56 Olympics and hearing
"it`s Herbaliot coming around the final bend"
it was strange because later I realised it was odd because everyone was shouting at a horse race and Dad was dead against gambling...
Turns out it was the runner Herb Elliot during the mile race-everytime a I hear a racecall it reminds me.

but then I thought Viet Cong Guerillas were actually trained gorilla`s with machine gun belts and attitude.

what a magical time childhood is.
cheers

I know this is pretty embarrassing but when satellite TV first came out I could not shake off the image of the presenters broadcasting from a studio in space. Full disclaimer - I was not a child. While my rational mind knew fine well that the studios were firmly on the ground, every time I thought about satellite TV I had this mental image of weightless TV presenters floating around.

That makes sense.  Their stories carried no weight and weren't grounded in reality anyway, ya?
