What DO you get with Cakewalk by Bandlab

I was curious so I grabbed a W10 Laptop we have at work. First I unistalled Home Studio and anything but the SI instrument suite. I was told that is the additional content you can choose to download.

So I signed up under a made up name etc and signed in to Bandlab home page. Iwas expecting to find a huge link for the download of the assistant app? It was hard to find and was just a little link at the bottom of the web page.

Anyhow got that going and downloaded and installed within 15 minutes.

So I opened and poked around and here's what was there:

Under VST's there was only the SI instruments and TTS-1 for synths.
In the Effects there is only the Sonitus stuff, Boost11 and TH3,
The Pro channel is very stripped down with I guess what came with Artist. There are no Compressors. Just the Consol emulators.
OK I did not dowload the addition stuff as it was over a GB and IT Dept will notice me. So if there is more than just SI stuff included someone let me know.

Otherwise this is more or less Sonar Artist  certainly not Splat.

Hmm. No drum replacer or vocal sync? Adaptive Limiter?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

The drum replacer and Adaptive limiter are not part of the SONAR Platinum installer so are not part of CbB either. VocalSync is in CbB along with the MFX plug-ins.

I was thinking about installing CbB on a laptop too, just to see what's what, but SPlat's already on that laptop and in the end I don't guess it really matters.  Either I go with CbB or I don't.  I'm just bothered by this whole debacle, I guess.

regarding Cakewalk by BandLab ....
instead of looking for plugs & stuff..... why not look at what you are getting feature wise ?
i put it on 2 machines where i had Splat .....as far as i can tell I still had mix recall and a bunch of other features i didn't get when i was running  X3 PE ....
need i list them ? that in it self blows away the whole comparing CW BL E to HS ...

Yes ? No ?

Certainly not. Compare Home Studio with Platinum General and Control bar sections of the comparison chart

Edit: Even better BandLab finally produced a comparison chart for CbB and SONAR http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3750958

OK it might be closer to using Artist.

I was just curious as to what a brand new user would be getting VST and Plug in wise, I totally understand that the features might be the same as Platinum. But my experience on opening it is it really reminded me of Home Studio more than Splat. Mostly because of the sparse Pro Channel offerings and the VST offerings. Yes it does have the synth Rack and Event List etc unlike HS.

Don't get me wrong the intent of this is not to bash it at all, I just was curious about what the experience would be like for a new user who didn't have prior versions installed. We will end up helping new users here and it will be good to know what they have and don't have.

Re: What DO you get with Cakewalk by Bandlab 2018/04/13 01:47:39 (permalink)
I see all the other regular PC modules and Style Dials that are bundled with Platinum in the Cakewalk.exe installer.  This confirms what I have read but if they do not show up, it may be a support issue (if not something peculiar to your installation). There should be a bunch of folders and dlls in C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\Internal - the default PC module folder.

Also not sure about your info on Instrument.exe. I did not download it, so cannot look in the installer for what it contained but read it was the Artist Instrument Collection. The SI Instrument Suite is a different installer.

Some of the things in CbB missing in Artist: VocalSync, patch points/aux tracks, plug-in load balancing and MIDI tranform tool.

OK I was wondering about that.
When I was un installing everything I had Artist Instrument and the SI and I un installed the Artist and kept the SI.
So only way to really do this is I'll bring the Laptop home this weekend and download the supplied extra files.

I got a nasty email from the IT dept last time I was downloading big files.
I'll also load up a project with Audio and see whats up with those tools. So far I only loaded a midi file.

Re: What DO you get with Cakewalk by Bandlab 2018/04/13 03:15:15 (permalink)
You basically get the core version of Sonar Platinum DAW that will integrate with one of the 3 specific versions of Gibson's Sonar.
If you were an owner of Platinum all of your plugins and add ons would be able to scan into the new CbL version. The Daw engine is identical to the Platinum engine. Like wise if you were an owner of "Artist" then all the "Artist" ad ons would be able to scan into the new CbL version. I was a SPLAT owner and I have been able to set up everything [unless I'm forgetting something], just like I had before under the new Cakewalk by BandLab.
Of coarse if you never owned one of those versions you basically get a highly respectable award winning Pro level Digital Audio Workstation. . . for free. Plus you get BandLab!
Welcome to the Bands of Bakers and Labbers.

Thanks but of course I'm aware of all that, this is about just figuring out how it will be for those who do not have any Cakewalk software from the past.
I'm sure Noel could just tell us, but I always do things the hard way :)

I really dn't understand why a feature list wasn't created. It wuldn't have taken anytime. Take the Platinum feture list and delete the extras. Being this would probably lead to someone creating a comparison with the  Comparison Chart they already had, then it cud have just been added to that.

I would think that BandLab will monetize on Rapture Pro, Z3ta, LP-EQ, LP-MB, Adaptive Limiter, LA-2A, other PC stuff, Drum Replacer etc. not in the first installer for those non-SONAR Platinum users.

Those of that had that in SPlat wil eventually get installers. Which should negate the need for CCC.

Sorry, I posted this on the facebook group but not here - a comparison chart is coming. Please remember that there will be more things added and updated into the next version that weren't able to be part of Early Access. Drum Replacer will be back, for example!

So we didn't want to put out misinformation as to what exists and also there are still a few things pending contractually for other things as it's a new company. Lesser of two evils, hope you guys can understand.

When CbL leaves the Early Access stage it will continue to be free? I continue without understanding the business model of the DAW Do you plan to monetize plugins and kept the core DAW for free?

I have installed the free version on my test computer and apart from a few issues with registry entries (my fault due to an earlier steam version leaving stuff behind) it works quite happily on the next windows build so far and scanned in all my 3rd party VST's.
Also this time you do get a warning that a new build is about to take place before you shut your PC down and on the plus side it didn't screw up my audio set-up for the 1st time.

Yes I downloaded Cakewalk by bandlab. I have splat and have forever, at least as long as it has existed. Upgraded to the top level every time it was available and when I open CbB, after going into preferences and rerouting the search for vsts everything is there. And everything works. That was about all I expected. I figure if I was starting from scratch I'd just invest in a good quality package of plugs.

The drum replacer and Adaptive limiter are not part of the SONAR Platinum installer so are not part of CbB either. VocalSync is in CbB along with the MFX plug-ins.

I got Drum Replacer and Adaptive Limiter as part of the monthly update of Sonar Platinum(SPLAT) for free.

Re: What DO you get with Cakewalk by Bandlab 2018/04/13 16:02:23 (permalink)
Thanks Meng a list would help for sure.

This morning I did some experimenting.
First, the assistant seems buggy still. It took 4 tries to get it to wake up.
It was just going round and round and I had to kill it with Task Manager.
Once I got it working I went to the APPs and found out the option to download  Cakewalk and the additional content is now gone. Oh well.

So I loaded up an project with real drums etc and tried a few things I commonly do in Splat.
First I dragged a Bass track to a MIDI track, hey, it's working, it said "Mixing Down Audio" and  showed a progress bar like always. But sadly when it was finished there was nothing there. Was what I expected without Melodyn but I was briefly excited that it was going to work.

Under Regional Effects there is only Vocal Sync. No drum replacer.

I'll just add this here.
Because there is no theme editor yet first timers have only the 2 themes Tungsten and Mercury.
Tungsten I can no longer use because of the Dark PVR so have to use Mercury.
Murcury defaults to your track colours overlayed on each track which is almost more annouying than the Dark PVR.
Noel pointed me to a little box you uncheck in Preferences/Colours that disables this.

People with the Splat version can copy over the Sonar  Tungsten theme to the Cakewalk Theme folder.

How does my old Sonar Platinum licence interact with the new BandLab licence ?

Can I now legally run Platinum and CwbBL concurrently ?

Different products from different companies each with their own license. Given that BandLab purchased Gibson/Cakewalk IP and recommends maintaining your previous SONAR install while adding CbB, I doubt there is a legal issue.

I thought I'd update my experiance so far with the bare bones DAW.
Here is my Pro Channel options.

So no compressors.

I've been populating my sparce VST collections with some of my favorite freebies.

First is under a new user name I installed the XLN installer and grabbed the demo for the AD keys. Great piano but with a 4 octave limitation. Hasn't bothered me yet.

Second the Ample P bass free. Best bass I've ever used also with a small issue of no notes below E. Bummer for a few songs of mine but good for 98%.

Ample also has a Guitar VST that I grabbed while on the web site, Havn't tried it yet.

Then I downloaded my favorite free  60's organ VST called the Combo F.

Not sure this is correct. Check the PC modules in the track. If either the PC76 and PC4K are already on the track, they will not show in the insert module menu. The one not in use should appear on the replace module menu.
