What a f***ing disaster! I've gone almost completely deaf

........in my left ear!!!

Wax buildup compounded by the fact that I need ear plugs to sleep at night.

The nurse at the walk in centre advises olive oil four times a day in my ear (I'd rather put it on my pizza).

Can anyone recommend anything more subtle than a corkscrew to get it out?

Yeah - lots to choose from.  My husband had a problem with this a few years ago.... I think he just used the Murine one??  Anyway, it worked pretty quickly and he was back to normal.

Get it syringed properly on the NHS Jeff, there's too much delicate stuff down there to be prodding around yourself.

    Hey there.

Earplug user myself - caused buildup in left ear, but my issues were not with hearing.  Loosened up the ear-canal with olive-oil for about a week, then went back to the doctor (ENT specialist) who dug into my ear with what looked like a dentist's pick and hauled the whole nonsense out in one fell swoop.  Fairly painless, just weirdly uncomfortable for a second until he presents to you on the end of the spear your excess luggage!  EEEWWWWW!

Don't use Q-tips.  Will exacerbate the compression of build-up.

    That'll do it!

Yeah... this happened to me many years ago..... woke up one day and the left ear was really plugged bad.... I tried the over the counter stuff, and it didn't work.... so a call and a visit to an Ear Nose & Throat specialist, and $50 bucks later, I could hear clearly again. Nothing but wax build up that was pretty dried and gross.

    Make the call.

Happens to my kids (and dogs) often. My wife uses the same thing that the doctors use to get it out. It's like a plastic version of the dentist pick. You have to be careful, though.  I hadn't heard about the olive oil, but I'm sure it helps!

Rubbing Alcohol will loosen it right up. Suck it out with an ear syringe. Remember to moisturize afterward.

Also from Devon - hi! I've never had the old wax buildup issue in a bad way my self, but have known others who had it. For ***'s sake don't poke about in your ear with anything, and don't try sucking it out with the hoover! Olive oil is good because it will unstick it from the ear canal, and then it might fall out on it's own one night when you are asleep, and end up stuck in your hair or something. If that doesn't work go and have it removed by a doctor. Hope you manage to get unwaxed soon!

as strum mc strum said.. OR you can use that other stuff.. errm it breaks down the wax..

    Audiclean

    it's purified sea stuff..

It works in 3 ways: 1 - Cleanses the ear canal safely and effectively 2 - Helps prevent the formation of wax plugs 3 - Disperses earwax and helps extract obstructive wax plugs. It is made from 100% Sea Serum

boots etc sell it, but it's £10-£15 lasts ages though

do not I repeat DO NOT use wax candeling.. it's not good for your ears.. and the thing they show u as "ear wax" from burning them , are just burnt matter from the candle..

but yer slightly warmed olive oil is good for it.

I've used hydrogen peroxide.  It bubbles up and tickles but dissolves whatever is in there.  Tip your head to the side to drain.  Dry Q tip to mop up.

Ouch, I've had this quite a few times now.

I can recommend olive oil, its not as abrasive as the other ear drops you can get with hydrogen peroxide in them. Alternate between the two.

After a few days of this, get yourself round to your local surgery and see your nurse to get them syringed.

The feeling of relief when it unblocks is quite amazing!

That's what I have to do after swimming in the ocean. For some reason, it clogs my ears right up, so if my earplugs fall out or leak, I need to get one of those plastic tipped syringes and use a 50/50 water/hydrogen peroxide mix to get all the gunk out.

I went to hospital with a blocked ear and as well as some wax there was some fluff down there right against the ear drum (probably from using cotton buds) .  They actually did suck it out with a vacuum cleaner - albeit a specialised ear one. Really weird sensation but beautiful stereo clarity once it was all done!

The annoying thing about the timing is that I just finished doing all the tracking for my current project and was supposed to be doing the mixing this week!!

Get an eye dropper (i.e., what I'm talking about is like a mini turkey baster).  Suck up a few drops of the oil and release into your ear while you're lying on your side.  Let sit for a few minutes.  You'll need to do this repeatedly.  It won't loosen everything up in one or two applications.

But as others have said, in the end, it's best to go to a doctor's office and have them blast the buildup with an ear syringe.

Jeff, this happens to me once every two or three years, nothing to do whatsoever with personal hygene, some people just produce more ear wax than others, simple as that I have been informed.

The Pogue is right, just ring up your local NHS surgery, and book a visit for the doctor or the practice nurse to syringe it out for you, job done. My practise has had a machine for several years now that the nurse controls via a footswitch. Some people baulk at having their ears syringed but I have to admit it is a strangely pleasant sensation, well, to me anyway. Also the sudden return of your full hearing is very welcome. I always let the nurse know I am a musician and my ears are the tools of my trade, just to make sure she doesn't turn the dial on her gizmo to 11 straight away ! Leave it to the experts, dont poke around in there and best of all in the UK, it's a free service.

This exact same thread came up about a year ago.

I use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and warmish water applied with a needle-less syringe, being careful to not form a seal between the syringe and ear, which could cause a dangerous level of pressure in the ear. I have been to the doctor a couple times with this, and here is the exact product they used:

     Elephant Ears

The above site does not disclose the fluid used to clean, but I asked the tech doing the cleaning and she said the peroxide as stated above. Ask your doctor to be sure.

Just found this link that does mention the peroxide:

I bought Murine Ear Wash hoping to cure this unending tinnitus. So far no luck, but that's probably because I've only done it once.

The product you need is called Cerumol and it is a rather strong-smelling mixture of various organic solvents and oils. There are two methods for use

    1. The official method. Apply several drops into the ear while lying on your side and after a few minutes, use a bit of cotton wool to soak up any excess and then repeat daily until the problem is resolved

    2. The rather gross but effective - and, I think, pretty safe - method, which usually resolves the issue in one session. Make sure you have tissues handy before starting. Using the supplied eyedropper, apply several drops into the ear while lying on your side. Then, WITHOUT POKING THE EYEDROPPER IN TOO AGGRESSIVELY, use the bulb of the eyedropper to suck the liquid back into the dropper, then squeeze gently back into the ear. Repeat several times, leaving the liquid in the ear on the last time. Then gently blot away the liquid from the ear with a tissue. You will probably have rather a lot of earwax visible on the tissue - eww!. Now repeat the above process several times. This gentle syringing usually sorts things out in a single session. Do not continue if there is any pain or discomfort, or if the first attempt does not yield visible results on the tissue, whatever's in there is too impacted and you may need to follow the official procedure for a day or two to soften things up first. Cerumol is much much more effective than olive oil but it does smell strongly of, well, industrial solvent, so be aware of this.

As others have mentioned, don't go poking cotton buds or anything else in there. At the least you will just drive everything further in and you could rupture an eardrum, damage the delicate bones that connect to it, or provoke a nasty ear infection.
