It's about 13 years old and it aired for less than one season, but Firefly was (in my humble opinion), one of the finest sci-fi shows ever to air. I have the DVDs at home, but I saw that Netflix has it as well. If you have never had a chance to catch it yet, do yourself a gigantic favor and get out the snacks, turn up the volume, and kick back in the recliner to watch this show. You may want to call in sick for a day or two just to binge watch it. Some of the dialogue goes by quickly, so you've got to pay attention. Follow it with the movie, Serenity.

Interesting that with all the great educational and documentary fare available on Netflix, every one of you guys is recommending escapist entertainment. OK, Orange is the New Black is pretty good. So is Lillyhammer. If you like sci-fi action and aren't offended by gay folk being portrayed as normal people, check out Sense8. But 90% of what I watch on NF is non-fiction. I became a Rush fan after seeing Beyond the Lighted Stage on Netflix. Runnin' Down a Dream (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) is a must-see. Ditto for other biographies Chasing Sound (Les Paul), The Language of Music (Tom Dowd), and Atlantic Records (Ahmet Artegun). Then there are the making-of docs such as Classic Albums: Making Of Dark Side of the Moon. And don't forget the concerts. Pulse (David Gilmour), Hell Freezes Over (Eagles) and Premonition (John Fogerty) are three that offer outstanding performances and great audio quality.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Thanks Bit.....great recommendations and will definitely keep all of these on standby. As much as I would love to see these, I'm not sure if the Mrs. would like it as much.....will still suggest it to her. :)

I am a little surprised by all the comments and recommendations that this inquiry generated. Apparently there are others beside myself that still enjoy a good TV show. It seems in the past that when someone asked about TV, there would be a bunch of responses basically saying something like 'I don't waste my time on TV nonsense'. Personally I can respect this feeling should the person wish to engage in other creative endeavors. I myself have been a long-time believer though that TV does have a lot to offer, if you search it out. Granted much of it is purely for relaxation purposes, but nothing wrong with that (assuming you don't do this everyday for 12-16-hours). Many of today's shows are just incredible in their production (e.g., Game of Thrones), at least as far as what TV shows used to be like. And with cable, the restrictions are looser which can offer more gritty type shows (although am sure to the dismay of many though).

+1 Ken Majority of shows have good production/graphics, but the lacking in solid content. Netflix is nice because there aren't any commercials......just have to search for "good" shows. Generally speaking of TV, it's very difficult to find a true "family oriented" show (even children's shows like Sprout have commercials that promote contraception or some other adult oriented material that's targeting mothers). My wife & I have a tough time selecting stuff from cable TV for our 4 little ones to watch, but we've seen the Andy Griffith show (all seasons) at least 2 times :). On the other hand, the cartoons coming out now are practically just garbage with pop/hip/hop themed music......the children of course are drawn to the colors/characters/graphics. So happy they all love to read books......and the library is our friend.

With all the soccer/football games on lately it's rare that our TV has any other show on it. Then, when that happens, How It's Made (Science Channel) tends to be the big favorite for background entertainment.

Absolutely!! We also like watching "How it's Made"......good stuff there. The little ones just love to bake, so anytime there's something to do with "cooking", they're very interested. Of course when I take over the remote, it's always on to the Willow Cricket channel.

Well, Netflix streaming is nice if all you want is TV shows. Their offerings of movies are paltry and abominable--a lot of stuff that they could not even go direct to DVD. And every movie shows up in a dozen different "categories," so one movie is like a comedy, drama, action, adventure, independant, sci-fi, thriller, romance, kung-fu, musical, foreign film. They claim to have thousands of offerings, but that can only be if they count each TV episode separately. They have a bunch of kid's stuff, but that is not much use to me, and they have recently stocked a bunch of Mexican soap operas, that are not much good to anyone. Bitflipper is right that there is a lot of good documentary stuff, that did a first run on PBS or National Geographic or BBC. Their user preference robot seems a bit weird. The Suggestions for Slartabartfast list seems to be full of stuff they think I will hate (1 star).

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is a great show. Kind of like Seinfeld, in that it's about a group of delusional, selfish screwups - but on crack & PCP. The writing and performances are great, and of course from season 2 it has Danny DeVito in what is definitely one of the best roles of his career as Frank. It's worth watching just to witness the gradual decline of Frank, who becomes more and more disgusting and depraved as the show progresses - and Rickety Cricket (played by David Hornsby), who starts off as a respectable priest in season 2 and ends up as a filthy street bum due to him getting screwed over by the gang so many times. By the end I can hardly stand to look at him, he looks so effed up with teeth missing and scars & scabs all over his face. Yet still the gang do their level best to make his life worse every time they see him. I love this show. Another good watch is An Idiot Abroad in which Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant send the half witted but strangely insightful Karl Pilkington on trips to exotic locations to see how his narrow, insular mind copes with it. Some genuinely great moments in that one, and travel shows are always great. Extras is fantastic, if only for Darren Lamb, surely one of the funniest characters of all time.

From the description of "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" doesn't seem like it's very sunny. I'm not really that interested in delusional selfish screw-ups as it'd be like being in the real world. I might check out those travel shows as well as Extras sounds good.

Hi, I was thinking that there was some of the old stuff that might be found, in there, though I doubt it. Of interest: Ken Russell's biographies, specially Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and his version of Isadora Duncan I, Claudius -- still way out there! Sharpe - the series, all 17 shows, including the last two that are not about England/France. There is some good stuff there. Lillie Roundtree - (Lillie). Was really good until the last 2 episodes that got a bit over written and they tried to revive it, but couldn't. It was all good as long as Bertie was there, and then died! Mile High - A stewardess thing, that was not great, but had a couple of excellent performances. Fun watching stuff, though. For more recent, I will get the unexpurgated Game of Thrones when it comes out. I am not a fan of censored television at all! Monarch of the Glen - Also some fun performances, specially the doggie and the old man, otherwise OK. Cracker - Had the guy that went on to do some Harry Potter, and this show, was incredibly good and non-sentimental. It had some great moments! And, lastly, I miss Absolutely Fabulous ... love to see those two women drunk! That show would probably go well in Broadway with a double bill of the French films about the rich .... and his butler ... and ... (don't watch the Robin Williams film if you saw the originals!)

Moshkito Sharpe Game of Thrones Monarch of the Glen Cracker
We have series 1 -4 of Game of Thrones on DVD, brilliant stuff, it's getting better each series (as the budget grows!) Series 5 is on Blinkbox but I haven't seen it on Netflix yet. Robbie Coltrane was superb in Cracker. Monarch of The Glen was on Netflix a few years back, we watched them all, love that show. Got most of Sharpe on VHS, but nothing to play them on...

It is indeed an issue ... where to start, and where to end. My suggestions will always be ... go for the different stuff and the odd stuff because you will never see it again, and they just disappear. It's the same thing in Film Festivals ... never/ever, see the American or the English films ... see everything else, because all the rest will never be released or shown again anywhere!

Hi, "Mile High", when it was done, towards the end of the series they had this bit about one of the stewardesses that got hired by a certain Arab country's airline, and the first thing they did was take your passport, so you could not leave. And in the past year, during the build up for the soccer cup, guess what you were reading and hearing about? In the story, it was a bit more about the fast living and rich side of it all kind of thing ... and party and all that ... but in the end, it is the same thing!

Peep Show is a masterpiece, very well observed comedy especially if you're familiar with the kind of social circles Jez and Mark run in. And of course "Big Suze" is a complete and utter babe if you're into posh tottie
