What desk(s) do you use?
Need a desk and im on a budget ($500). I simply dont know where to shop for good studio desks. Id prefer it to take up relatively little space, i need two monitor shelves, room for a 23 inch display in between them, room on the actual desk for my interface, midi controller and mouse pad, and a slide out drawer for the computer keyboard, that if i wish could also fit my oxygen 49 on it instead. Im sure theres plenty of desks that fit, i just have no idea where to start looking. Id prefer not to have to order it online, and im looking for under $500

I have two desks, and one is small, from my old studio, and I would be willing to part with it if you don't mind a used desk. I don't know what monitors you use, but there probably isn't enough room on the desk for the monitors. I used to use some stands and they worked pretty well. I still have the stands, and a couple of Mopad cushions if you are interested. I'll look around and see if I have some pics of the old setup. Paul

Okay not the best pic, but it will give you some idea: I'm not too worried about getting money for it, but I don't want it to cost me either. Let me know what you think. There is a riser on which I currently have two 17" video monitors. More than enough space for a 23" display. There are about 4 rack spaces , a sliding drawer, and I have a couple of Edirol monitors on it right now, but they are dinky. If you want some better pics, and pics of the monitor stands let me know. Shipping this will be expensive, but I'd rather see someone using it than donate it. BTW, this unit is called the Studio RTA Workstation. I paid about $120.00 for it. Paul

This is about twice as much as you want to spend, but I love my KK Audio "K1" desk - just posting this to provide another idea of what's out there: http://www.kkaudio.com/K1.html I got it in black with the keyboard + mouse shelf option. The K1 is smaller than their flagship A1 desk.

I'm currently suffering terrible GAS for a Studio RTA Producer desk. They hit that terrible spot of being more money than I sensibly should spend right now, but within the reach of affordability. The devil truly finds work for idle credit cards.

Tim, Are you making fun of us for using pre-built desks? I know this pic shows a mess, and it is a bit tidier now, but still, I would rather be making music than building desks. Besides that, I am a musician primarily, and those tools always hurt my hands, break my nails, and keep me from playing classical guitar for weeks. Paul

I'm totally down with the idea of not spending money on stuff you can do yourself. But I am the most incompetent handyman the world has ever seen. There are entire health and safety departments devoted to making sure nobody ever has to sit near to a desk I've brandished a screwdriver in the direction of.

total price for all the elements for main desk was les than 300$ (including moving keyboard deck, screws, polishing, paint etc). On the first photo you can see additional desk on the right side - I bought just the deck (plate?) which is 1,2meter lond, and egs are from 1930's carpenters machine. Right deck costed me 20-25$

yeah - I'm the freak :) Behringers costed me about 100$ for BCR and 130$ for BCF, modification coted me maybe 10$ for now (materials / screws). Additional 10,4" monitors costed 33$ each + 35$ for two universal power supply units for them.

as you can see - I have Win7 (64bit but it doesn't matter). the clou is to install two DIFFERENT graphic cards: ATI and nVidia (not ATI-ATI or nVidia-nVidia). it can be one better, one worse - in my case - main is nVidia GT 440 and second is ATI Radeon HD 4350. Then you just right-click on the main screen (desktop) and configure layout. No problems. Trick with using two different card is because system can eventually want to make Crossfire/SLI - and if you have ATI and nVidia together - you have no such problems with drivers, SLI/Crossfire etc. Just remember to instal first (BETTER, main) card, reboot, then add/insert another card, then start system and eventually add drivers for the second one.

This is what I use and love it. $429.99 new on amazon. Unless you build one yourself this is probably the best one in the under $500 price range. I think Guitar Center will match the price as well so you won't have to wait or pay for shipping. Studio RTA Producer Station Also, you might be able to find one used for cheaper. A friend of mine did.

bladetragic, That is a good deal. Issue I had is that the V-Studio 700 Console is too deep for most things designed as computer desks. The one you are showing would be great for 90% of the population and I wish it would work for me. Jungfriend, You have a good set-up and I respect anyone who has a pod on his desk (like me). What mixer do you have on the stand that looks like a tape machine remote stand--and where did you get the stand? I am referring to the roller stand on the right that looks like it was made for the remote on an Ampex 24-track.

I built my desk myself also. I am terrible with tools, but i had a neighbor who was good at building furniture. I told him what i wanted to do an he gave me advise on how to do construct it. I designed on paper and figured out exacly how many pieces of wood i needed and what size. I built the desk out 3/4" plywood and figured the best way to cut up 4' by 8' slabs. I went to a hardware chain, Builder's Square, and they cut the wood to within 1/8" of my specs. I assembled the wood by glueing most of it. I used a small mitor saw/box to hand saw trim for all the edges. After that I threw a big, heavy coat of stain over the wood. My desk is better than anything I could buy in the store, mainly because it perfectly suited to my needs. It was less that $100. If I can do anyone can.
