IT network engineer since 1985 the dawn of the micro computer. I retired six years ago. I'm 59 now, you do the math, I can't count anymore. Prior to computers I was a plummer.

I'l bet you can still see backfall without a level, can't you?
I was a plumber for 15 years before I came to Texas. When I see roller-coaster drains under mobile homes, I feel like I really should straighten those out. But that's not my gig any more.

I've changed jobs a lot during my life. Only fired once, though.
Currently a sales associate for the world's largest retailer, desperately trying to hold on until I can start collecting social security (if it still exists in 5 years). It won't be much, but I'm pretty sure living in a tent in the woods (or a van down by the river) won't cost too much.

My career that is at the 27-year mark is heading for a dead end.
I run printing presses. I print newspapers first and fore most. Then it's envelopes, cards, letterheads, mill forms, books and just about everything else that you can think of.
As a lot of you are probably aware, newspapers are going the way of the dinosaur.
Most folks want their news now and it is so easily obtainable with the net and smart phones and such.
Where I live is a small town and I can see the local paper (where I work) spiraling into that big dark pit of doom.
So, for the last year or two I have been working on a side business hoping to transition into that when this whole newspaper thing blows over. I plan (hope) to have my own BBQ business soon.

I started an exterminating business in 1989. I now pay other people to work. I also married well. My wife worked and supported me as I got my business started from scratch, never took a loan, just got after it. Then when I was on my feet she went to college and got a masters in accounting in 4 years. She is now the fastest growing and best CPA in town... so, I work very little anymore.
Life's been good to me so far... (I've taken risks and worked long hours).

I work for a big fur auction company, since 1976 already. Many kinds of tasks from producing teaching material to teaching breeding stock selection at farms and being a member of the selling team.
A branch that arouses debate. You couldn't find a more reliable employer, though.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Re: What do you all do for a living? 2015/02/21 22:11:35 (permalink)
I've worked dozens of different (and usually very physical) jobs in my teens and 20's - from lumberjack to farmer to painter to working warehouses and eventually working security.

My 30's I've spent working desk jobs in call centers - started on the phone and ended up a part of workforce management. Funny because I hated math and never could figure out Excel, but I spent my days staring at Spreadhseets...

I found comfort in the idea that I could earn enough to support the both of us working from home, and that I had the best "real job" I could ever hope for, considering my lack of any formal qualifications.

Sporadically, I'd play live or write for documentaries or video games...

When my wife signed with Cirque, we decided that there was no option other than me following her. I started writing music for her, recording her demos and being the male equivalent of a housewife. (I'm a "houseband" I guess).

We finally settled down here in Vegas and were recently approved for the green card. So I'll be able to get a social security number and work. We hope to start our own business but I should be mostly working from home, part time, in the studio. We have tons of project. And a couple of live music projects.

Used to be here under a different name a few years ago but lost my password and the email that went with it was gone so I have lurked for the past few years. With upgrading to platinum I had to get a new profile so I can post again. In my 20's I worked 3rd shift buffing and refinishing floors (as well as moving the bodies and a host of other things) and getting into trouble at the local hospital. You wouldn't believe what goes on in places like that after hours. Had a lot of fun, made some good friends and earned just enough money to pay the bills. At 30 I had enough of 3rd shift and barely scraping by. After that I went into full time ministry (which really wasn't part of my plan but I enjoy it) and I have been a pastor for the past ten years. I have always been able to make some money off of my music and 3 years ago was able to score a film. That was certainly a highlight for me. I hope to be able to do some more work of that nature in the future. Cool reading about everyone. Good thread.

Re: What do you all do for a living? 2015/02/22 18:00:27 (permalink)
I am retired now and grow most of our fruit, vegies, herbs, poultry and eggs.
we are solar powered, collect our own water, cut our own firewood for heating and hot water and dispose of all our waste which all take up most of the day.
I left school at 17 to work on the grain harvest for a few years and got into the transport and inventory side and spent the next 30 years off and on designing materials handling distribution and inventory systems,12 hour days living on coffee and egg n becan sandwiches.
I ended up in NJ in 91 ,on contract, amortising company assets using Lotus 123 on an IBM36 mainframe got sucked into the widespread habit of artificially extending your working day, wigged out and did a runner home and built this house out of local stone which became the worlds first off grid recording studio using an 8 channel Hoontek card and with the help of Beagle and others upgraded to an industry standard studio around 95,when I joined the CH.
I used to record allcomers but these days I concentrate on young musicians although they are invariably broke and most of it is pro bono.I could probably get more work but I am a dinosaur and only record live-which means I do a lot of demo work for bands to send to the venue bookers as they need to know if you can cut it onstage as opposed to your cd.
there is an awesome DW kit still setup in the drum room from the weekends recording so this morning I am hoping to nail a drum track with it although I can only drum for about 20 minutes these days so that gives me at least 3 or 4 takes.
its a song about forums so all being well I hope to do guitar, bass and vocals today and maybe get it it up on the songs forum whilst the topic is still relevant.
cheers
tony

ha-I have only 500 posts in 9 years because I was concerned about incriminating myself and offending others but these days I don`t think anyone really cares if you choose pot over booze or other drugs as long as you are functioning and effective.
the political climate is changing rapidly here and with decriminalisation now only a stroke of the pen away it`s amazing just how many ordinary people as well as " celebrities" are fessing up to the after dinner doobie.
