I have played on live sets many times: Sang in groups around London produced songs that have had massive impacts in my community and continue to wow people with my lyrical content.

We all have something to offer young man!

It's not wise to not use a feature that some one else has used. The wise thing would be to use it erm why John?

Why should I be curious to use something that I used before and I am happy to use that function in a way that works for me? I am struggling to see your logic Spock!
I'm not sure what you are asking. So that I am clear I broke up the post into sections that had a particular idea in each.

Anyone of the ideas could be looked at alone or in context to the others. The theme was simple. Features in a broad powerful program are not bad. They may help a user complete a project. Nor is it important that another person isn't using a feature or that another is.

In other words I don't see the point of this thread. I am also a little embarrassed by those that say they don't use this or that feature and do so proudly. I could see and appreciate people saying " I wish I had time to try that out or I as yet have not had a reason to use that feature".

But thats just me.

Best
John

Sensible post John!

I have used the punch in punch out but feel more comfortable in the way that I use it.

I don't think this post to be not useful. I was wondering the other day that whilst I use X1 alot I seem to only use some features and not all. I thought to be pro I would need to know how to use all of it.

This post makes me realise that not all features are heavily utilized by people or pro's who are more pro than i am.

to utilize some of the other features in X1 I would have to be making alot of mistakes just so that I could use them. Take for instance V-vocal I do not use all the time as I like to get things right first or second time.

I would not could not get too deep into how v-vocal works its just not something that i want to specialize in. Although, I am glad that it is there! it's a feature that I use from time to time but dont like to use it too much. I think I use it just to touch up a vocal performance which doesnt make a huge impact on anything that I perform vocally.

Some may use it consistently, I have used the arpegiator a few times but could you imagine that taking from the song you have designed to sound natural and not over processed.

Mod Bod has done a great job by introducing us to this thread John!

I am sure you could see to agree?

I await with baited breath, but if your songs are as devoid of content as your responses...

Please enjoy this musical interlude:

Oops, I hear a small mistake, maybe they should re-record the whole song as opposed to punching in. Shouldn't disrupt the workflow or add any expense to the recording session at all.

And yet you are presumptuous enough to suggest to others like myself how they -should- do things. I could care less if you use the punch in feature or not, but to suggest it is not a valid tool to others is a little contrary, n'est ce pas?

I feel like punchin something else but forsake of not getting band I will hold back right now lol

Stoons I hope your music is as deliberate as your postings madame masielle!

Stoons when I got home from work yesterday I did a whole song with lyrics too!

It is fun working in Sonar using the tools that it has at my disposal fabulous. Not saying that no other DAW can do this but I really feel comfortable with X1 at the moment.

I seriously hope that eventually when I do upgrade to X2 it will be equally as sublime to work in. I may even go X2 Pro.

Thats how happy I am with Sonar at the mo...and I am the kind of person that will rip into Cakewalk if it is not right. I am their biggest critic I think.

Also want to say thanks to the team. I complained alot about the metronome now it is fixed. I mentioned that they should bake their products for longer and also sell products in the meantime whilst they do bake. They have done exactly that too!

I am sure over the next few months after the release of X2 they will continue to add modules to this version, using X2 as a foundation that you can add to, over its predestined cycle. Giving X2 a longer life expectancy. I think that it strengthens the product over all and gives it some authenticity!

Anyway Stoons I hope that you are happy using your Sonar to help you to realise your dreams. As I use it as a hobbyist who enjoys writing and producing. I am glad they are so many tools that are implemented in Sonar. Making it a fuller well rounded product which enable to get you immersed in to every aspect of producing without breaking the bank.

Well done Cake!

This is kind of a strange thread. I agree with Bitflipper that it would actually be cool to have a poll. That said, I rely on many of the things listed by folks above. I'd be lost without the wealth of features in Sonar. It appears when someone says they only use three features in Sonar and that's it that they are not really using Sonar like a regular user. And if someone lists a rock solid feature as useless that they either don't have a personal need for it, or they don't understand what it does. Sonar has a great feature set and I'm really excited about what I've seen for the automation improvements upcoming in X2.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Re:What features do you never use? 2012/08/11 06:25:52 (permalink)
i agree, very strange thread in the sense that many of the features commonly listed are legacy features that i doubt Sonar develops anymore and many that do not install unless you make a special effort beyond a regular install. Even stranger is the many people listing features that would never apply to the styles of music they record. i can't imagine the step sequencer being of use to someone recording opera. Any powerful program is going to have tons of features that are usueless to many. many of the best photoshop users I know use only a fraction of what's available in the program due to redundancy, but let one of the known gurus develop some trendy trick of the moment with a little used feature and in no time, it's the must use feature. The same applies to Sonar, Cubase or any other DAW. If Deadmaus or some other trendy dance producer or remixer claimed they used Pentagon for bassline, it would suddenly jump to being a a highly used synth overnight.

Yeah, it is/was an odd thread.   Does anyone really care what features I don't use?   Doubtful.   Do I really care what features others don't use?   Nope.  Why I would care what others *don't* use?   I'm more interested in what others *do* use, things that I may be missing out on.   And to that end, I think this thread is useful!

One feature overlooked by many is the PDF manual.  This is evident by some of the "how-to" questions asked on these forums

SonarPlatinum(22.11.0.111)|Mixbus32C(4.3.19)|DigitalPerformer(9.5.1)|Reaper(5.77)
FractalDesign:DefineR5|i7-6850k@4.1GHz|16GB@2666MHz-DDR4|MSI:GamingProCarbonX99a|Matrox:M9148(x2)|UAD2solo(6.5.2)|W7Ult-x64-SP1
Audient:iD22+ASP800|KRK:VXT6|+various-outboard-gear|+guitars&basses, etc.
Having fun at work lately

Well - I look at it this way.. I could name the futures I do not use at this moment, but I cannot be certain I will NEVER use those futures. In other words - all these lists here paint a still-picture of the uses some people have at this moment, but do not take in account what will happen at a later time-frame. I do not use PX-64 Percussion Strip at this moment, but (as an example) I going to record a drum session in the near future it is fully possible I will use PX-64 Percussion Strip and have no need for VX-64 Vocal Strip. I think it is good Sonar has a wide pallet of FX/synths/Utilities, because you never know at forehand what you will need in the coming months/years (even if you think you are certain about it now)..

I'm guessing the whole point was a way of starting another staff view complaint thread without being so direct.
