What is the best Multiband compressor?

So what is the best Multiband compressor to use with Sonar X3?

Of course people will say Sonitus Multiband or and LP-64. But what about the other third party options, and do I really need to spend my $$$ or should I be happy with what I have?

I appreciate Multiband compressors can be a pretty niche requirement for some (although I'm sure many use them all the time).

I did a little bit of research, Sonalksis CQ-1 was mentioned (no idea about that one).

Thanks...

I was about to write that when I saw you already had.

"Best" remains very subjective, but it sure is a nice and extremely well featured one.

Well I'm experimenting with LP-64 over the master bus right now, after placing it on there and doing nothing more other than playback, addictive drums tends to just drop the occasional note (even with the buffers right up). So maybe I do need another multiband compressor (do other people get this?). Anyway I'll detract, if the issue persists I'll start another thread...

Absolutely interested in people subjective viewpoints... Interpret "best" meaning... best for you... :) Cheers...

The best one I have ever used hands down, is this one: http://www.uaudio.com/media/assetlibrary/p/r/pre_multi_hq.jpg

I know not everyone wants a UAD card, but man, honest when I tell you, nothing compares to that in my opinion. It's so seamless and transparent, you have to really jump on it to have it ruin something. I've tried quite a few of these in my time and this just (as well as other UAD tonality compressors) obliterates the competition.

I give the LP 64 MB a pretty high grade too. Just use smaller ratio's when using it than the 2 presets give you. When using similar settings used on my UAD on the LP 64, it really did a nice job. I like it better than the Waves MBL's and the other 3rd party plugs available that do this sort of thing. The good thing about the UAD is, it polices to the point of hearing it but not to the point of ruining anything with artifacts.

Re: What is the best Multiband compressor? 2013/12/28 19:42:09 (permalink)
Izotope Alloy 2 has a fine multiband compressor as well as multiband saturation and transient control.  It's great.

To some extent it'll depend on what you're looking for.

I did some interesting stuff with Alloy recently on a vocal to compress the body of the voice without bringing up the esses.  Rather than compressing and then having to de-ess, just don't apply the compression and consequent make-up gain to the esses in the first place.

I think Alloy's a bit too aggressive in some ways to use on the master buss for example, and it's limited to 3 bands.

After reading this thread, I did a little googling and found this page: http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2010/10/14/bpb-freeware-studio-best-free-multiband-compressor-vst-plugins/

I've read some good reviews of free plugins and bpb seems to like these.

Are they worth checking out?

Have to agree that Ozone 5's Multiband Compressor is very good. But it takes a deft hand to not overdo it.

Hi Dave,

I don't have Ozone 5 so it wouldn't be fair to comment, but I DO have Ozone 3 and 4. Their stuff is pretty cool, but for some reason, I've just never warmed up to it. I've heard people get good results using it but I've heard more people ruin their material with it as well. I know this can happen with any multi band but this is why I'm also so blown away by the UAD. You have to use so much of it to ruin a mix, it's nearly fool-proof. Did you ever just use something when you have a problem and it fixes you every time without artifacts or issues? That's been my experience with it.Sorry I can't be more helpful. Again though, the Sonar LP 64 is quite good and I use it on my pc's that don't have UAD cards.

Hey Danny,

Thanks for the feedback on the Ozone 5 module.....  It is pretty easy to go just "a bit too far" with it so from this thread I'll go away resolved to "be careful".  (It's my best choice at the moment).  From the description of your experiences with the UAD plug it sorta makes me wish I had the bucks to buy the accelerator card or an Apollo and give it a try......something to plan for the future.

I can honestly say that I've never found a need for a multiband compressor. They seem like trying to fix a bad mix. Unless someone can explain them better? I understand what they do but they seem like overkill and make it easier to mess things up.

I'm not saying anything (just in case you've heard my mixes) .

More seriously if used in moderation sometimes you can get great results, and (er) cleanup ... er.... somebody else's mix (cough cough not mine! It was... you know who.... er anyway moving on....)

Hi Guitarpima,
I find that I use multiband comps mostly when I just am looking for very transparent compression. Just leave all the bands at a common setting and it will only compress the frequencies that need it. High female vocals are a good use for this. Frequently traditional single-band compressors can "dull" the sound of the singer a bit because they clamp down on the whole frequency range. Now, maybe this is what you want and you'll just fix it with some EQ and maybe a bit of 'verb or delay, but another way to go about it is with a multiband. It will keep the nasal or chesty-ness from becoming overpowering without dulling the highs. Alternately, maybe she gets a bit "shrieky" or "squeaky"...same thing. I find that when I use it in a "mastering" scenario it's really just because I'm looking for good transparent dynamic control.

Oh, and I like Ozone and UAD mostly. The T-racks Quad MB is OK, but I find that I really have to turn down the threshold a ton to get any GR...almost like it expects a super hot signal coming in.

I nabbed the iZotope Studio Bundle, but only after the 10-day trial. I think the free Nectar Elements was a ploy for sales, and it worked on me, LOL. The Alloy 2/Ozone 5 was not really what I was after, but when the Nectar 2 Production Suite was only $50 more I nabbed the package.

When I was testing those, I saved a few projects with new names and stripped off all FX/PC modules and only used them, and they do a nice job. I have never owned anything iZotope before, so was a bit leery to commit to it at first, but the stress testing proved them out. It is worth downloading the trial for Alloy 2 and checking it out. Be sure to save project files with new names though... just in case you back out, you won't have to redo anything.

Anyone else got tips for use of MBCs? Maybe Groove 3 has a vid on it?

Actually I was thinking about multibands and all the alternatives that could be on offer as I was playing around with Sonar's existing multibands. I literarily fell into performance issues when I reached post #4. By the time I had reached #15 I had enough to build a test case. Anyway that's the other thread... My thread marketing isn't that devious, although don't give me ideas...

Fabfilter has a sale going on but it's only for their bundles. The cheapest bundle with Pro-MB is their Mastering Bundle, which currently costs 314e over here. Not sure what they do with pounds. I hate to tell you, but you will probably LOVE Pro Q, Pro L and Pro C as well, which are also included in that bundle. The sale is until Jan 1st. If you teach anywhere you can get an educational license which gives you 50 percent off (not on deals) but you can't transfer your license.

As an existing FabFilter user when I log in I'm being offered Pro MB at £88.96 (36% off) until Jan 1st, i.e. without bundling it with anything else. I'll probably get it because that's a tempting price.

My stuff

May I ask why? I do have it but Pro-MB seems such an incredible amount better to me in every area.

I've never tried Pro-MB. Only UAD/Waves/Izotope. Gosh, all I can say is that it works for me. I and many other people I work with professionally have been using it for years. I know that is not much help to you.

You are the only person in a situation to compare. What do you like better about Pro-MB?
