Ah I see you went and read the other posts.

Don't worry I keep a plastic cover on the couch when you are not here.

Mooch would (probably) recommend that you keep in the couch when I Am there.

I was hoping to keep the plastic clean.

It's no trouble taking it off and putting it back on after you leave.

very interesting, Michael and I am not necessarily arguing with you, but proposing some scenerios similar to your objections of the term "musician"

you didn't specifically state anything regarding a vocalist only falling into the category of "musician" or "non-musician."  what are your views on a vocalist only who uses BIAB or "loops" to construct a song and record vocals on?  in other words, using BIAB or loops to construct the song as a backing track for the vocalist to sing along with (well, either live or recording I guess wouldn't matter)?

First off Reece as I made it clear that we all make our own determinations of defining what a musician is...there is nothing to argue about.
Secondly I made no objections to how others define the word and in fact pointed out that we may all have different reasons for making
the determination.

I didn't state anything about a vocalist because I don't refer to them as a musician. I refer to them as vocalist and my opinion of BIAB was
very clear. I said nothing of a musician messing with recording tools. I specifically stated a person with a computer and BIAB.
I feel you may be trying to twist my statements so let me make it very clear, again. I do not consider somebody using a PC and BIAB a musician.
I do not refer to vocalist as musicians. I call them a vocalist. If they can play an instrument when I refer to them I will state they are a vocalist and then mention that they also play an instrument.  I've stated many times....so and so is a vocalist and also plays bass.

The definition that you may have is yours....I'll put my simply....as in real life situations that I have experienced and lived...not what
an opinion for print might be.

You and and another musician are talking about forming a group.....the question is very simple...one asks, "do you know any musicians to call?".  Well I have never had computers or programmers enter that scenario. They have always been somebody that could play an instrument.
When the musicians were needed and usually found- none could carry a tune....the question would be, " say, do ya know any vocalists?"

Pretty darn easy Reece.  You and I may call ourselves anything we  want...other musicians will determine if a person is one and to what level of musicianship one has....and as I previously stated , their determination may be based on more than ones ability to play.

A musician is someone who makes dead people look good at their funerals.

(or am I confusing this word with another?)

Michael - I had no intention of twisting your words at all.  I was just asking your opinion of a specific example.  I have no malice toward you for anything you've said (typed!) even if your definition of a musician is different than mine.

again - this is just a discussion - I'm not trying to do anything to your opinion except asking you to discuss it!  or not.  if you don't feel like continuing the discussion you could always yell "becan!!!" and point the other way and I'll probably run after it like a stupid mutt who doesn't realize you didn't throw any becan over there!

since you differentiate between "vocalists" and "musicians," would it matter if a vocalist has a degree in music?  if a vocalist could tell you that the chord you're playing is actually an A9 instead of an A2 - does that still make that person a "vocalist" and not a musician?

again - I'm NOT trying to twist your words or make you look foolish.  I'm truly interested in your opinion - even tho it may be different than mine, so please don't take it that way.  if you don't want to participate, that's fine, too, just ignore my question or tell me to "becan off!"

How do you get a guitar player off your front porch?  Pay for the pizza.

Did you hear about the guitarist who played in tune?  Neither did I.

How do you know when the stage is level?  When the drummer drools out of both sides of his mouth.

Why are most guitarist jokes one-liners?  So the rest of the band can understand them.

It's not over here!  I missed what you were saying, Beagle, because I heard someone yell, "Becan" and then point to a distant corner of the room.  I don't know how I could have missed it.  I'll keep looking.

Oh, (not that it matters a great deal), I've known outstanding instrumentalists that really couldn't tell you with any certainty what key they were playing or what chords they were playing over.  But they could play leads and solos that would make you cry they were so good.  Maybe since I place a higher personal value on the feel of the music than on the theory, I valued this type of musician more than someone who is more classically trained.  But that's just me.

I found it!!!!  No, sorry.  That was just some beef jerky someone left on the floor.  I'll keep looking.

mmmmm...nice can of worms you have here...

uuummmmm...I'll go with a slight point here...I "play" keyboards, guitar, some sax..and I do use my voice...but my primary job is in healthcare...I do not "see" myself as a "musician" simplly because I am not a professional in that sense..OK..maybe in my past I was...bar bands and such.

In model railroading there is a distinction made between a model railroader and a collector...one models a railroad while the other is collecting the locomotives...two completely different beasties...

I find myself agreeing that a musician is 'someone who makes music', and maybe also with a qualifying descriptor 'Pro', 'Bedroom', 'Gigging' etc.

Probably what's more important is how others pigeon-hole you - "Self praise is no recommendation" as my dear old Grandma used to say.

Depends a lot on who they think they are as well...some brass collectors do have rather large layouts..but others have display cases...

Several of the piano players I have know who play in churches can set down and sight read music with 4 sharps or flats in the key signature, but ask them what key they're playing in and you get the deer in the headlight look.... they have no clue, yet they can sight read it well.

Ask that same player to jam in  a key like "A" with a 1,4,5 progression and again they have no clue.... but they can play Chopin like nobody's business from the sheet music.
