Curious question as the chord movements are only as potent as the melody over them (or implied)....but..having blurted that out, i would say my favorite chords are the common ones that are so well interwoven with different voicings that you'd hardly believe it. Here's one of my favorite chord/melody movements: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2yLMpGPU8A

Raba, It's much more efficient to use Roman Numeral notation for progressions. It's a relative notation from the tonic, so it eliminates the key. Uppercase "I" is the tonic. Lower case numerals for minor chords. For example, C, F, Am, G would be I, IV, vi, V. If learn to think this way, you can cover a song in any key that the singer needs.

I dunno, MurMan. Maybe the original poster really means those particular chords in that particular key, and that it wouldn't work in B or G. Later Albert

vi IV V I V or vi IV I V vi I II IV III It's true though, every key has it's own 'color' or feel to it. The key of E is far different in power from the key of C or D. 10-4 roger wilco over and out

Albert, You might be right. I know this is opening up a can of worms, but if we're using an equally-tempered scale, a progression is the same regardless of the key that you play it in. Of course the key does matter because real instruments and voices don't sound the same across their range. But, the progression is still the same. Because a progression played on actual instruments does sound different in different keys (because of the voicing of the instruments mostly), some guys will argue to the death that one key is better than another. I'm just throwing out some food for thought for the OP. Not trying to confuse. M

Albert - I've only taken 1 semester of theory so far, so forgive my ignorance, but why won't that work for B or G? G = I, IV, vi, V = G, C, Em, D B = I, IV, vi, V = B, E, G#m, F# for reference to "any other key" C = I, IV, vi, V = C, F, Am, G D = I, IV, vi, V = D, G, Bm, A

Reece, the progression works in any key, you are correct. And to everyone else, it was just a thought I had when I read the post. It seemed that while mentioning progressions, which have nothing to do with the key, including the actual chord names, maybe the key is meaningful in this case. Later Albert

Most songs can transfer to most keys without problem, but I'd add that some songs just seem to suit the lower keys - for example if the guitars are not at standard tuning, maybe tuned down a semitone. Apart from the lower sounding notes, the slackness of the strings adds a whole sound of it's own too.

MurMan If learn to think this way, you can cover a song in any key that the singer needs. In CHB land we don't change key for no steenkin' singer If he can't get low enough, he's force fed cigars and H 2SO 4 - if he can't reach the highs, I apply my patented Rob Halford brand pliers to his gonads. Change key - the very thought of it It's in A or Am or E or Em, or very occasionally B/Bm or D - and that's your lot (unless it's F#m) It's bloody singists and pianoers that write stuff in Eb just to annoy me

It seemed that while mentioning progressions, which have nothing to do with the key, including the actual chord names, maybe the key is meaningful in this case. Later Albert while intervals are intervals no matter what the key a certain "key" does have its own flavor. (F) has been called the "love" key for its softness. (E flat) the mellow key while (E) is a bit hard sounding. Then add to the fact that the ops (fingering) for those chords may have a certain voicing specific to that key. Using a guitar for example an open (g) chord may have a note order of: G B D G B G (C) chord C E G C E So the sound is different because of the voicings used. I too would have used numbers instead but it is unclear if the ops means he likes the progression (and) the key (and) the chords. (In that key) My answer to the ops question of favorite chord progressions? I like jazz chords, Oh wait he said (chord progressions) Hum? how about. I Maj7, I#dim, IImin7add9, II#dim, IIImin7flat 5, IVsus4 resolving to a IV then end with a IV with a (V bass) which is actualy a V11 chord

SteveStrummerUK In CHB land we don't change key for no steenkin' singer In MurrayLand, we change the key willingly for attractive singers in a low-cut dress. (Since you're from the UK, I should clarify that; make it "attractive female singers ...") You're right about Eb. Most annoying. I grew up playing with bands instead of classical.

Hi, Doesn't matter as long as it is Daevid Allen or Steve Hillage doing the glissando ... and dang'it ... I wanna hear Strummy doing an acid rock glissando with nastier sounds ... and pound it out good! (I took this photo a few years back ... click on it to make it bigger)

Herb, I agree. Strummy, I don't write in Eb, or any flat cause I don't wanna make the guitarists made. (and because it's harder) :-( And, for the record, no song has EVER, no matter WHAT the chord progression, done what he said above. Yeah, you know what I mean. Carry on boys...I'm outta here. lol

i agree different keys have a different sound when playing certain chords/cadences, and different instruments do too. for example, i love Db major when playing piano but would not dream of starting a song on guitar in this key. however, i love B/G#min on guitar, it's great for soloing and producing some unusual open chords, but it's a key i hate playing in on piano!

Sorry...it was late and I forgot to put link for the changes I like and posted. Trying to put my studio back together as been taxing. Pat's very good but I still prefer Wes. For those that care...one may have heard, many times, about the II-V change-up. Very popular in jazz. This is a great example. Not trying to be smart-a...just trying to share one of my fav progression's. Four On Six

I bet it's very cool. Could the problem be tying the two together? a C chord is a fairly close common denominator if you can sneak it in between the the keys. It may work in a bridge between. Also a Db chord (and all it's variations) will work with both. It's the III in Amajor and the VI in Fminor. Keep hammering away. If you can tie those two keys together you've just learned a lot about harmonic theory.
