This does sound better than your first mix, but the vox could still do with some more warmth/intimacy to my ears. Maybe it's just me, but usually when I hear your stuff everything sounds right. This one is still very good, but not quite as "perfect" as usual to me.

Hi Frank,

I missed the previous mix but this sounds great.

Kristan has a nice voice and you've done a good job of showcasing it.

Her voice sounds much different now, and I do not hear it the same as with the rough mix.
(I was not trying to be critical and probably just pointing out what was obvious before with the rough mix.) Makes the entire song different and better.

As a keyboard player I doubt if you want my review of this song now. Yes, somehow now I agree that some ladies will be more important than men in the future. I don't know if you want to meet in the back street alleys and discuss how the South will rise again, or just scratch it all and put in a lamenting love fiddle player's part discussing the woes of how this world really is??

But whatever focus for the song and view that you have, it is your song to do with as you please.
I think you will have to relisten to the song a few times and decide for yourself what you really want the song to be.
(and I hope you take it as constructive.)

I'm a bit late to the party here, Frank, and I'm not sure what mix I heard, but whatever it was sounded freaking great.  The mix was spot on IMO, and the performances, vocal and instrumental, were just superb.

Great song too.  Were you the writer on this?

Loved it!

She sings terrific, Frank.

I would space her voice out to the sides a bit more, she' s in the middle as she should be, but only in the middle, IYKWIM.

Great song.

Well, after the 8th time through, perhaps I was tired earlier. The song sounded better, but.............then perhaps a bit more tweak but then we all are different with different ears.

The song moves right along.

Something lost and something gained. I like this one better.
I love the tune and think that it deserves a more popish approach myself. And, I think you are struggling with how to make that happen with guitars. I think it needs more keys/synths. But, then again, it could be perfect as is.

Re:When I rule The World featuring Kristan Mikala 2011/02/19 23:56:19 (permalink)

I haven't been on the forum here as much lately due to the treatments and all and how I've felt,
but I sure have missed doing so. I'm on a friends computor with akg 240 cans at the moment so it's
cool to have a listen from a different playback system (on a laptop). I was giving thought to what
some have mentioned on the mix and the changes that have been made. You have such a good way
of starting off with your mixes in such a way that they already sound good. It's just a point of
the choices in the "tweaking" to take it where you want to go with it.

One thing that came to mind was the mention of the "sounding commercial" subject be it the mix
and or the production. To me your style of mixing etc sounds very tasteful (like a mix done with taste)
Maybe sometimes a person may lean towards (thinking) pop, comercial or whatever when mixing
so that it may sound "in the norm" so to speak. This mix to me sounds like a nice combination
of taste and style and such that it sounds individual (call it franks style) in a good way.

I do hear hints of things that may be what some people might call "things" that people do such
as effects, panning and such things that are heard on comercial music, or at least thats the
term I'm using.

For example the lead vocs sound a bit "chorused" or cloned and just in the middle. That
seems to make the voc more alive, but it takes away from the lush, warm sound of a "great tone"
that a voc would otherwise have.  (and it could maybe use) a touch of stereo imaging.

The harmony vocs have an exagerated stereo imgage. As if to say that the harmony vocs
could use less stereo imaging and the lead vocs a touch more stereo imaging so they
blend together. I really enjoy the mix and if there were anything that I'd mention as
far as mix tweaks go that would be about it and even that would be subjective to
a persons taste.

Very well done Frank. Your works are so good that they set standards in quality.

Re:When I rule The World featuring Kristan Mikala 2011/02/20 00:27:35 (permalink)
Personally I like dynamics a bit in the song. So to me the vocals are a little too out front, but not all the time. Say like the first two long verses to me the vocals should be softer but of course louder in the chorus and up to about somewhere 2:00 minute mark where the louder chorus of course is around 2:14 ends or so. Whether on the short verse that comes next the vocal is too loud is subjective of course if (like I like to hear) the song building in dynamics a bit from the start to the end, so by the end which seems better for the vocal to me but maybe a touch softer than the seemingly short loud verse, then the song ends there about right to me at the finish.

I like the interaction of the instrument between the left and right channel which gives (at least to me) that down-home rhythm in the song and then perhaps building up a bit more in the short verse after the second chorus (or lowering the vocal there a bit) and then the last part of the song (which to me) rings out the best for me for the song.
Perhaps a bit more drums building up a bit more also.
(that's a lot of work also to do all of that to the song) so perhaps the short description is that I thought the vocals were a little bit too out front now.

Re:When I rule The World featuring Kristan Mikala 2011/02/20 12:10:34 (permalink)
I've never tried to mix this many guitar tracks together...
I played 3 acoustic tracks, and 3 electric guitar tracks, plus E. Piano, Bass, & Drums... then Dave Adkins added another 4 tracks of Electric Guitar... 10 guitars... a record for me...
James I know what your saying about the lead vocal only in the middle, but I don't know how I could spread it out more without coloring it... is there a plug I need... I'm running 64-bit Sonar 8.5 PE...
Jimmy, yes maybe that's what James means... more stereo imaging, and you're right about the harmony vox having an exaggerated stereo image... I must work on that too... keep fighting Jimmy, I'm praying for your full recovery...
Spacealf, thankyou for listing and the feedback... very helpful...
And thanks to everyone else for your kind words...
What a great resource...

Frank the Vocal Channel strip has an imaging section which can be used independent of the other parts.

Re:When I rule The World featuring Kristan Mikala 2011/02/20 14:03:31 (permalink)
Heck I don't know for sure, it to me is close or on, depending if the singer should be out front like she is in some of it.

(I'm not going to get into it. The only way I done any of that is through volume envelopes on every track and tweaking and tweaking and tweaking, and it took a long time, the ears get tired, you let it sit for a couple of days, and go back, and again and again. That was 32 tracks.
I figured out at that point that if the recording was made better in the first place and played better then the volume swells and lulls would just be done better into the recording in the first place and I needed more pinpoint accurate playing (which duh may be possible or not.))
(but all I have is Sonar 7, and and automation and using the mouse is not what I have really done, or care to do. I figure it is more work but in the end for me the volume envelopes on each track was the only way to sit there and change it a very little or change it or change it or change it until that was good enough).

After 50-100 times through that song I did which is not all that good, I rather listen to your song than the one I did.

Wookie..  I did not know that, thank you sir... I'm going to look into that right now...
Janet, I'm so glad you like it... I'm too close to it, and I'm burned out on the tune to make any kind of rational judgement... They've already shot the video footage, and they're waiting on the final mix... I really respect your opinion... Thanks ...

Re:When I rule The World featuring Kristan Mikala 2011/02/20 22:06:22 (permalink)
Ah, it is different, and weird. There is a story on the Internet that came out about a supposed time traveller, and of course all I had up to really recent was gaming soundblaster audio cards, because well, nothing I have done (except really work on that one version of that song) has been carefully done. It started out as midi back in 2000-2001 after this guy posted on the Internet, so then someone put it out across the Internet, then all the forums and people found out and saying yeah or nah, while I was trying to remember science and some books and catching up with that. So, it is kind of a symphony piece (sorta) but not all that great. I probably should not do this, because people may be on edge enough in this Country lately, and I am older and retired early for health problems but since I took computer programming I should be able to get a job. Well, no, not really for jobs went a year after overseas and I was already old after that two-year college programming stuff.
So the short version is that I hope it does not happen, and really some stuff has not happen, but then again, there are parallels maybe. Since then there has been science articles about mathematically proving parallel universes and work going along with science papers, but still sometimes I wonder if the scientists are not more concerned with the way this world is going (or not going depending) and concerned that it may all end with that N-war in the end. So......after all of that, this song is a response to the threads the guy posted on, and the response of the people (sorta) and the story and subsequent linear progression in time up to 2036.

About some people favorite subject (but not mine anymore):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Titor

I hope some of it has changed but really it was not spot on with his story anyway. (if anyone wants to be bored, it is all at Anomalies.Net:
http://anomalies.net/object/titororiginalpost.html

http://anomalies.net/object/johntitor.html

It raised a stir for a couple of years or so on the Internet, but actually it was dead on this anomalies forum but someone else decided to post it a lot of places or something. So, video movies have been made, and all of that.

I finally put this song (?) into a video that is kind of just all not that good originally done with midi at first, then changed over to audio files and then actually finished whatever this song is bit later (month and a half for I had a little bit of a life back then and was still working and had not had my heart attack yet, which....................well, I sit around too much and have to exercise, for I been sitting around too much for the last two years, too much.)

So I have not done much and maybe won't but then....................
here it is I guess:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjvk_4P0Clw

and not that good of a video anyway with cheap soundblaster cards (computer games seemed to be more important to me until lately.)

Well, all I can say is that it is too slow to me, and blah about it all, story, and song.
So it is all kind of corny and out there I guess wherever it is in spacetime and just out there, I guess.

But not all that many people even know about this, and I am not here to scare anyone either.
