Where are the Cakewalk Talents?
I think the problem with New Sonar Subscription is that “upgrade” version does not offer any significant improvements and relies on users trust. They promise improvements and useful content but we all had disappointing experience in the past. I remember free content samples bank they offered- that bank sounded like leftover samples that did not make in to any paid library. FX1 and FX2- remember those? Cakewalk was already trying to offer monthly content to registered users- they hardly offered anything that we cared to install. How do we know- this will miraculously change? Think about it as a stock market: if you were offered to buy shares, would you buy them, knowing that the company did not release any new product in last 2 years? The software syths they trying to sale hardly go for $50 on sale, because everybody already has them. What improvements will realistically be released in the near future? “New Sonar” has virtually no new features compared to X3 that we already paid for, so what would convince us to subscribe and be hopeful regarding new features if it did not happen so far? I remember Cakewalk looking for new Software engineers. Did they hire anybody promising? Why not have “Creative Staff” page with pictures, biographies, resumes, and work experience of the programmers? Any music software company has the pictures of their “creative force” members. How do we know- Cakewalk even has anybody to make those promised improvements? Have them step forward, tell about their work, experience, ideas, and projects- make it interesting. I collect software synths. I have very good idea who makes those synths. If Cakewalk has personalities worth of investment- we should know about them. This way we would know what to expect in the future. Empty promises are not inspiring.

ROFL! No matter how much information anyone has there is no way to know what to expect in the future. That's why it's called the future.

I disagree that there are no real improvements in this version, but I agree that this new policy would be well served by a coding team keeping a high profile. I can't say I've been disappointed with the five patches to X3, to be honest, nor with their presence on the forum. Personally I care much less about in-house created plugs or synths (since I'll go third party 90 percent of the time anyway) and way more about workflow and core DAW functionality. Comping and ARA were huge for me in X3 for example.

Vlad. you seem like a cool person, but I think your expectations are a little off on this. i suspect that people who do have the current Adobe option have a clearer picture of how it works on the product side of thing even though payment model is completely different. Much of the talk seems to assume Cakewalk is shipping an incomplete product with promises of adding to it. What is shipping could easily be released as "X4" and the usual praise would be heaped by those inclined to do so and it is equally true there would be a fair share of "i don't need this feature", "what about notation", "i still want patches for X3", etc would occur too. Patches would be released several times throughout the year and then there would be speculation on X5. Will the new release have bugs? Of course it will. All software does. The difference now on the product end is they can respond to smaller fixes quicker without waiting months to release a big letter labeled update. If there was some feature that was not quite ready for launch, that feature can be introduced without waiting for "X5". Will there be hiccups along the way? It would be foolish for Cakewalk to guarantee it will all transition perfectly with even the best intentions. the bottom line is the biggest change in what you receive in this upgrade vs the past is how updates and fixes are applied.

Hmm maybe cakewalk should release a daily horoscope and advertise staff in the personal ads ;)

I dont think patches and fixes should be paid. Fix implies that something did not work as planned, caused conflict or crash and developers fixed it. That should be free. This is about the same as new car warranty. If I buy Toyota new car, I expect it to have no issues. If there are issues, Toyota will have to fix it. Now I am not starting discussion about car manufacturer's integrity. But the idea is that company can not sale software that works half way. Anybody who used Sonar for more than 2 years, knows how unstable it used to be. And every time new update, we had to spend money, saying, "Yey finally it will not crash!" and another $150 later- guess what- it still crashes. They were releasing new updates every year asking for more money for the same product that they supposedly fixed. So- now- we will not have to wait for them to fix and test everything- they just going to release it with more problems and then follow up with fixes sooner. And if we don't pay- they will bot fix what they already sold. Personally I care much less about in-house created plugs or synths (since I'll go third party 90 percent of the time anyway) That is exactly my point. Cakewalk could make money, but they let money flow in hands of 3rd party developers. I do not own Abeltom Live, or Bitwig, so I can not give specific examples of what "other" DAW offers. But I know that it offers cool things that Sonar does not have. Why not research what it is that attracts users to other DAW and make the same or better options? I recently bought Nora arpeggiator. It is a nice tool. In their manual, they had step by step for Logic and Abelton. When I contacted them and asked if it would work on Sonar- they had no idea and said- nobody uses Sonar. Sonar is good to capture live musicians playing, like guitarists, vocalists and drummers. It is not good in making music out of nothing. Taking noise and converting it in to music, such as desktop electronica, dubstep, trance, progressive and so on Sonar is no good. How would I attract new kids to buy Sonar? I would offer functionality young generation needs. Music production technique changes, and Sonar is behind.

vladasyn I remember free content samples bank they offered- that bank sounded like leftover samples that did not make in to any paid library. They were free. The new content is part of what you get when you pay for membership. I (and others) could never have contributed content without justifying the time put into it. Now I can. The Amp Sims and new effects are a good example. Think about it as a stock market: if you were offered to buy shares, would you buy them, knowing that the company did not release any new product in last 2 years? SONAR X3 was released in September 2013 and had four additional updates within the first six months. The Z3TA+ iOS app was the #1 app in the app's store's music category at one point. Scratchpad came out. My EB5 expansion pack appeared and did very well, the forum has been revamped, hosts are now involved, the web site has been streamlined and single sign on implemented (although it needed some fixes, it was a necessary move), there have been a ton of tutorials and tips on the blog - keyed to an editorial calendar - to help people get the most out of SONAR, my "Tip of the Week" is up to almost 100,000 views (although my promise that I was going to stop after August was an "empty promise," I guess, so you got me there ), new distribution avenues have been opened up with Hal Leonard and Steam, collaborations are occurring with TASCAM, people are being signed up to create content...a lot has happened in the last few months, with much of it being the steps necessary to create a really cool, new way to buy and own software. “New Sonar” has virtually no new features compared to X3 that we already paid for, so what would convince us to subscribe and be hopeful regarding new features if it did not happen so far? New features. I don't find these trivial, but maybe that's just me. This was already done with the "Meet the Bakers" month. Not just the engineers, but the marketing team and others. They even went slumming, and got me in there as an honorary Baker - check out Bedtime Stories from Uncle Craig. Empty promises are not inspiring. My personal opinion is that X3, the first major product under new ownership, fulfilled a lot of promises (not the least of which was the additional updates and the continued vitality of the company), as did all the other line items mentioned above. Compare the year after the acquisition with the year before the acquisition. Stay tuned! (But when are they going to fix the "forum changing font size" issue?!?)

Apparently they don't receive MI SalesTrak. It used to be that products weren't tested very much with SONAR at all, but that has changed a lot. For example Universal Audio didn't care about SONAR; now they do. Panorama Nectar has a SONAR template. SSL developed one for Nucleus. These are all fairly recent developments. Sure, some smaller companies are a little slow to catch on...that's okay. In many ways SONAR was ahead of the time with music production. Dim Pro could run four REX files simultaneously and pull out the MIDI files for jumbling long before Reason's OctoRex. The Matrix view is the only other view that resembles what Live can do. Aside from Acid, AFAIK SONAR is the only program that lets you create and edit Acidized/stretchable files. Every MIDI track has an arpeggiator. Logic just re-discovered MIDI piugins but SONAR not only had them for years, but created an open standard for them.

They have already revealed one that possibly falls into that category; the drum replacement feature. If this had been on the table under the old model it may have been released as a paid optional plugin or simply pushed back to next version. In some ways Cakewalk may have been better off not announcing it and making it a pleasant surprise instead of announcing it early to be met with skepticism and accusations of releasing a beta product.

What is a scratchpad? Never heard of it. I guess, revamping forum and introduction of hosts makes big difference when you producing music. I do not read/watch tutorials. It has very little to do with my workflow. I already know how to do what I am doing. Was there a tutorial on how to create a Dubstep? I dont think so. I am sure they making new ways to distribute their product. Also it would go much better if they had something to distribute. I did not say that Sonar is a bad software for music. I am using it and not something else. But all the marketing is catered toward new buyers. It does nothing for us, who already has Sonar. I would like a new product if they want more money. I can not pay for the same product I already have. For some people $150 is not much, for others it is a lot. When I buy something, I should get new software synth or new effect or new arpegiator or new samples- I can not even verbalize what the new updates are for. There was nothing wrong with Transport and nothing wrong with Snap to Grid- it was fine. There was and IS a lot wrong with Staff view, with Piano Roll, step sequencer and several other things that should of been addressed first. For example Midi Through is not working properly. A lot of times it will send MIDI notes to software synths that assigned to different outputs. Plugins (Beat Tweaker) start randomly play because it receives command from somewhere that was not sent, and there is no way to play on more than one MIDI track simultaneously. Only active channel plays. So if you have 2 keyboardists or keyboardist and electronic drum set, 2 people can not play at the same time. But you would not experience all this instability if you are a guitarist and record live guitar. I missed the "meet the bakers" event, and this is exactly my point: there should be a web page that talks about new developments and staff. Not everybody has time to stay on the forums and hear release rumors. My Sonar did not change from the day of release. And now they want additional $150 for the same Sonar X3 with different name, vocal sync and new transport. All the other features on the list are not applicable for me.

Ryan Munnis [Cakewalk] Not everyone likes being in the limelight, but the marketing group did a "Meet The Bakers" thing a few months back where they introduced some of the folks here at the company. http://blog.cakewalk.com/category/news-2/inside-the-bakery/
Looks like a great crew. I went through all of the profiles and one thing that I noticed is that no one mentioned being into electronic music or synths. Everyone is posing with their guitars or saxes, it's all good, they look like great folks. However, it does explain why the EDM production workflow tends to be awkward in Sonar, it's not part of the culture. I hope you guys can find some whiz kids who are into new music and listen to their ideas.

I have read two profiles from the Tom Harvey's link above. At least these two bakers talking about being musicians. So the "Bakers" does not mean "Programmers" and "Coders"? I see no programing background.

vladasyn I dont think patches and fixes should be paid. Fix implies that something did not work as planned, caused conflict or crash and developers fixed it.
This is one aspect of the new model I don't like. I buy something, it should work and the responcibility should lay with the manufacturer. I haven't seen a logical argument against this. If a fault is a one off, ok, but if it is a smaller spread fault and you fix it for a still subscribing member, then make that fix freely available. No matter the timespan. vladasyn ...........music, such as desktop electronica, dubstep, trance, progressive and so on Sonar is no good. How would I attract new kids to buy Sonar? I would offer functionality young generation needs. Music production technique changes, and Sonar is behind.
Reading some posts yesterday, I think Sonar is missing this market and some activity would enhance this. My drum and bass days are left in 1998 (along with my old drum and bass name, coincidently it was 'Sonar') and my psychedelic trance days in 1995 . So I have no real interest in making Dance music beyond funk, but gaining some Dance music cred would bring in more cash and benefit sonar because of it. A thread yesterday mentioned the lack of tool, and a poster rightly pointed to AD2 and the Reel Kits, Anders mentions Z3ta+2 is great for those genres. It was argued that you can buy this for a smaller fee, but Platinum lacks any big Cakewalk plugs recently, there is nothing new for existing x pro users, apart from a reverb (which is not a unique addition) and Ad2 3 kits, which for many are either of no interest or were of interest when bundled with x3 and expanded upon in the past year. Offering 2 adpaks in Platinum and Z3TA 2 would have made it a more rounded offer. With that you could show the appeal to dance music musicians, show with a foundation of Z3ta 2 and reel machines, there were the tools for the foundation, and then pad out the compositions with the wealth of other already bundled plugs. Show the range of effects for manipulation already bundled, the side chain effects. Run a series on youtube of how too, get a known artist or producer involved, and SOS interested. Seems you guys a missing a whole market, and dance music musicians on this forum and really in the minority, and posters from other forums say they say Sonar is not for dance music.

I am a keyboard player. I make electronic music disregarding of what you call it. I became interested in Dubstep because it was new technique. I am interested in new techniques that produce interesting outcome. Z3ta 2 is years old and has grainy sound. I see many independent developers on KVR that offer their software for free. I think they have the same problem that independent musicians have: nobody supports them. If Cakewalk took few of these indie coders that making synth under their cover, gave them some money and the most importantly- inspiration, made a team of few of them, they would produce a product that would bring thousands of dollars in revenue. Continuing to force Z3ta on everybody makes no sense. We already have it. I paid like $99 for Z3ta 2 update- it is silly to say that now they give it to me for free in New Sonar. Thanks. I prefer discount for the Zeta 2 and AD2 that I already paid for- why should I pay again. Even beginners attempt to make soft synths with Synth Edit. Why continue sale Z3ta when they can hire people to use Synth Edit and design new synths, that go for $150 each. Here is a yearly membership in one purchase.

For beats I’ve never heard anyone better than Dr. Walker." "check out my latest music videos at http://www.youtube.com/thecraiganderton. It’s an eclectic collection, to say the least…from cover versions to French Antilles dance music to EDM to hard rock to a live ambient performance" [photo caption] "DJing with DJ Russ Reign. I love playing with people who are good on turntables." Here's an EDM-meets-rock-meets-DJ performance I did 8 years ago at the PreSonus booth. I mention the following not to brag, but to give you an idea of the type of person who has input considered by Cakewalk. I built my own synthesizer in 1968 and a mechanically programmable drum machine in 1970. I've been playing and doing solo live EDM sets since 1998, guested with Air Liquide and Rei$$dorf Force multiple times, and had remixes on several European dance compilations. I did two synth expansion packs for Rapture and programmed synth patches for Alesis, Ensoniq, Peavey, Roland, E-Mu, M-Audio, Oberheim, and probably some others I've forgotten...I was a regular at the Battery Park EDM festivals in Cologne when they were happening, and played other dance venues in Germany, Miami, and Switzerland. I've been writing for Keyboard magazine since 1975 and still write for them, and Kurzweil says their "punch" switch was based on my articles. So I've been into this a looooooong time. At this point I'm almost in a "been there, done that" mode when it comes to dance music, so I've been doing some hard rock lately to keep myself amused. Now, you might say "Okay, but you were doing it way back when. You're not hip to the latest stuff." Well, I listen to it and check out what's happening, but I just don't find it as interesting as what's happening these days with Caribbean dance music, like Soca, Zouk, and Konpa, or some of the current Afropop (internet radio is your friend!!). If you listen to Maladie Du Coeur from my YouTube channel, you'll hear the kind of dance music that spins my crank these days. I want to explore new places. I think that a blend of groups like Kassav, melded with EDM and with a little techno aggression thrown in for nostalgia purposes, would be an interesting place to travel...SONAR lets me do that, so no complaints. Then again I make most of my own sounds so it's probably not a fair comparison for people who want presets and loops oriented toward what they do. But hey! Now I have a chance to create content!! How convenient...also you'll see that some of the drum processors I've come up with tend toward the industrial. I guess I basically just like everything. The only music award I ever won was for classical music mastering. Go figure.

My point Vlad was to bring in new users rather than established. Bundling Reel Machines and Z3TA 2 would give a base for new comers to build on. Regards the grainy sound you say, I have no idea I've not used it, but isn't there an option the 2x oversample or something, or am I confusing with something else

I listen to dance music, and was my primary interest in the 90's to early 2000's, I'm still into synths, but physical instruments have taken over.

Anderton, I am glad that you have such a wide experience with electronic music and synths. It does not show from your forum avatar. Also it is confusing- if you work for Cakewalk, may be you consider to have "Cakewalk" instead of "Forum Host" under your picture, this way we would know. It is great that somebody knows about electronic music, it would be even better if this person was software developer. I have a lot of love for EDM and can program sounds, but I can not make my own software. "Bakers" to me are people who make software- nothing else is matter when it comes to software features. You either know how to make them or not. Electronic music value is not only in dance. It can be anything. You can use any drums and combine any types of instruments. The value is in technology. Before Massive, not many people heard sounds used in Dubstep now days. With introduction of distortion in software synths it became possible. We want to know where technology can take us and what can be discovered and invented in the future. Checking what is new on the market is not the same as making innovations. I would like to see Cakewalk hires real talents and innovators who will move progress of computer music.

Actually I'm not a Cakewalk employee, I am more like an in-house consultant for Gibson Brands and work with all the Gibson Brands. However I have a special place in my heart for Cakewalk because I've been using the software for so long and have had so much success with it. I'm also the one who engineered the acquisition by Gibson because I felt it would be a good home. Tell them to send in their resumes!!!! +1 on innovation.

Now that you said, Gibson, I realized- it is a guitar manufacturer. What do I expect? Roland was surprisingly neglectful as a keyboard company- may be they did not want to develop software synths because it would compete with their hardware keyboards. Gibson- no competition to guitars sales from software synths, so who knows... Is the Cakewalk still hiring? I would love to post reminder on KVR.

I firmly believe a small agile group like the bakers should focus on DAW issues and NOT drum machines... the entire vst arena is awash with amazing new stuff; recently I bought Serum which is amazing in it's own right but does nothing for the DAW.... I'd rather be able to "Hide all console tracks without data"... a huge DAW usability for me. And, per drums.... there are a zillion ways to go. Hell, Audiobro: LA DRAMA DRUMS (LADD) is blowing people away over at V.I Control... this is a wide open field! The joys of "VSTs"... or take a look at Xfer's "Nerve".... totally rad! amazing! We already get AD2... or go get some of the unique free offerings... A new, amazing floatable "Arp" module? fantastic... a new drum maschine or synth? There are many already... which do nothing to improve Sonar's functionality. Focus on the DAW, please! It's what they do best! And from the look of the "features request" forum, there are many awesome improvements we'd love to have taking our DAW to higher levels...

Oh look. Angsty people with nothing to do trolling on the internet is still a thing. How quaint.

One of our product managers brought his Arp2600 in one day, that was a lot of fun to explore. He has a lot of hardware and is into all sorts of electronic music. The meet the bakers isn't all the bakers by any means. There are so many amazingly talented, dedicated people that have been crafting this release with a lot of care. There's much more than bullet points. We've all poured our hearts into this company wide. I'm proud to be part of a great company. We can't wait to show you what we've been up to. Keith
