Where can I easily find drum parts?

I need an O-ring (or whatever it's called) for a snare stand. Got any ideas where I can find one of those things? I also need the nut and bolt for the part that holds the bottom section to the top section, but I figured that might be easier to find lying around the house.

In my experience it's pretty much impossible to get hold of spares like that unless you know somebody with a small engineering workshop that will do the work for you.

For me things like that have mostly meant having to resort to getting a whole new (or used) replacement stand.

I had collected a big box of spares over the years but even then different manufacturers of hardware all use slighty different sizes and styles of nuts and bolts and things like that it is still difficult to find the part you'd actually need that is the correct fit.

I just checked on Ebay UK for snare stands there's quite a selection there.

Plenty of good ones around the £20 ($30-$35?) mark which is probably around the price you'd pay for the spares if you could get hold of them.

A lot of drum parts are available here:

    http://www.drummaker.com

The standard hardware is standard, so you can get that here:

Don't ask me how I know.

What year did this standardisation take place?

When I ran the bicycle shops that was my exact specialty.

I added value to people's bike's and bike parts rather than advise them they needed to replace them.

It helps if you are a mechanically inclined nerd and can actually measure for what you need.

The nice thing is that you and I grew up in a day when there were many national standards for mechanical fittings... now a days most stuff is ISO standardized so you have a better chance of finding some generic piece of hardware that will fill the need.

    all the best,

I've never found two parts from different stands that match.  Which normally ends up with some part working loose, falling off when you don't need it to or becoming an annoyance.

Like I already said you can find a small engineering shop that will help you out, or you can spend hours poring over a catalogue and hope you've struck gold at the first attempt.

Economically I've found it's just easier to start afresh in most cases.  But that only applies to my experience with drum components.  I never had the lateral thought of taking my kits into a bike shop to add value.

It's probably been a failing of mine but there ya go.

For the sake of £20 though I'd go the new stand route, life's too short.

"What year did this standardisation take place?"

In my estimation the adoption of ISO standards took place in the mid 1980s in Japan, the early 1990's in Taiwan, the Phillipines, and Malaysia, and finally occurred in China in the mid 1990's.

It was the end of what we in the Bicycle industry called "french threads", "British threads", Whitworth threads, "Italian Threads", "Swiss threads", "American threads" (yes, there was more than just good ol SAE... there were some weird legacy threads... just like in Europe) etc.

Now a days we still persist with SAE over here but Metric is also ubiquitous. Metric has been universally adopted under ISO standards and it's every where.

The standards were adopted to enhance the ability to profitably trade world wide and allow vendors to plug and play product into supply chains with ease.

I'll dare to appear to lecture you here... as I often find that you ask a question and then get angered because I answer it as if you didn't already know the answer:

The adoption of standards in manufacturing hard goods is very similar to the adoption of standards we have experienced with media... things like JPEG, and MPEG are great examples of how standards have been infiltrating our daily experience and making stuff seem universal.

I'd opine that you and I grew up during the very beginning of the trend to universalize standards and that we have lived through most of the implementation of the idea.

We can enjoy some of the benefits of all that.

    It's worked out real good.

    all the best,
    mike

    No Mike

What would anger one when one is trying to convey a practical solution is when you try to give the shortest route that somebody would then come in and complicate it all up with a bunch of barely relevant ISO standards.

I say barely relevant because I understand the nuts and bolts of standardization and I personally don't mind being reminded of their advantages.  But when manufacturers deliberately choose to adopt different standards in order to specifically prevent the exchange of common parts between those manufacturers it becomes a maze of detective work to find what part will fit what.

Sure I already mentioned a local engineer as being a good choice to help with that but £20 worth of his time will get you a brand new stand.

I do believe you are being an arse here for the sake of it rather than trying to help the OP.

That's what would be a little annoying if my belief contained any truth at all.

Re:Where can I easily find drum parts? 2012/05/07 08:27:05 (permalink)

Oh guys, please don't get into it over my little question.  :)  I found this catalog:  Spare parts, and since I have the stand sitting right in front of me, I'm hoping I'll be able to find the right parts.  I think it's the one on page 19 and what I need is called a nylon bushing...and the wing nut.  (and most companies have good return policies anyway...I haven't checked the prices on these little things, but I'm hoping it's not much)

What I think is really cool is that I even know what a snare stand is!  :)  Yes, I'll admit....5 years ago, I didn't know which one was the snare drum!  LOL.  And today I can even play the silly things if the band happens to be in a pinch, (so I got to play last week and may be playing often this summer!)  :)

Now that's what's cool! :)   And yes, Jon, I know I could buy a new stand, but when I looked a few months ago, they wanted $70 for the silly things.  And I'm old enough and poor enough to think you oughtta be able to get the whole blasted kit for $70!   And yes, I'm well aware that that borders on ridiculous.  But I've been called worse.

    Thanks guys!  :)

I don't think it's nearly as complicated as it used to be.

I don't think manufacturers purposefully make stuff less than universal any more.

The manufacturers want to buy the nuts and bolts from the the cheapest source and the cheapest way to do that is to ask for bolts that are being made in large quantities in sizes that are shared by many.

If you can become angry because we simply assign different value to time then maybe we can agree that questions of time value are all so personal and relative that it may not be worth arguing about.

That's what I did at the bike shop... I offered options and let the customer retain the control. I tried to let the customer decide if/when it was better to replace something or not.

Ironically, I did help my drummer friends on occasions... we fixed a few lawn mowers, and did while you wait service on wheel chairs too.

    Parts is parts.

Ironically, the last time I tried to buy some pickguard screws at the local Fender dealer he said it wasn't worth his time to keep the all the right ones in stock. I said ok. 2 days later I had 100 of em from Macmaster Carr in my mailbox for less than the price of the 12 pack of wrong ones that he was hoping to pay the bills with by selling to some customer that didn't care about proper fit.

    :-)

Anyways, There are lots of good solutions for the OP to choose from.

    best regards,
    mike

Oh and the final irony, I had a friend stop by to see the remodel yesterday... he found an old Ludwig snare stand that I felt was useless laying on the the top of my trash can in preparation to being taken to the metal recyclers.

He had to have it... so he took it home. Happy Camper!

    :-)

    LOL

Sorry Janet, I'm just trying to administer some behavioural therapy to Mike via the forum.  It might look ugly but I think he enjoys it really...

Yes the nylon bush and nut and bolt combination makes more sense as a candidate for replacing if you can.

I think my figure of $30-35 is nearer what you'd be looking to pay for a complete replacement rather than $70 if you shop wisely, but good luck with the fix anyway.

Well, as long as you're both from Mars. :)

Jon, I may look into a whole used stand...maybe there's a decent priced one out there now.  But like I said, I haven't even contacted this company yet.  Hopefully their prices are decent.  What I'd like to do is find the model # on this stand so I can be sure.  I'll ask some of my real drummer friends (I mean the ones I can see in person)  :)

Mike seems prefer vintage so I'd say Imperial. Probably 3/4" with a retaining ring.

I'm hoping he'll correct me if I'm wrong...

    I had considered that.

I had also considered it was probably wise not to mention it.  I've been hit with too many drum stands so I already know that it's just better not to ask.
