Well, if Sweetwater's not interested in it, I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you took it off of their hands.

Re: Where's Rick? 2017/03/08 19:32:32 (permalink)
I lurvs Rickies but they seem to play very differently than other basses IME. The feel of the strings and fretboard is kind of strange... almost "floppy". It makes them eeeeeasy to play which is a little jarring to a derphound (that's me) used to playing on nasty P(ig)-Basses. Like the tension/action is off but I never had enough time to adjust my P(ig) smacking style to the velvety smooth feel of a Rickie.

It looks awesome though (did a googly moogly) and I'd lurvs to have one. The stereo out is a wicked bonus for what we do as DAW dorks (one to outboard gear, one to DI... BRILLIANT, always wanted a guit that does that).

Lots of cashola though but if you can afford it I'm sure you'd lurvs it.

That handrest/string cover might annoy you though but I'm sure it just pops off with a bit of screw loosening. I like that idea meself because my biggest problem playing bass with my fingers is not having a comfortable place to rest my right hand with out destroying the sound/muffling the strings and proper right hand bass technique wears out my hand/wrist and futzes up any concept of precision. That of course could be remedied with practass but ain't no Beeps got time for dat.

tl;dr

If you got the dough... doooo eeeeeetttt!!!!

Re: Where's Rick? 2017/03/08 19:53:37 (permalink)
@Beeps-on-Ter: My first bass was a cheap knock off. My secon bass was P Bass that I got for $15 (had to rewire it). My second bass was an Gibby Eb0 shorly swapped out for an Gibby Eb3. Then Eb3 was swapped out for a Rick 4003. Had that for about three years. So I knows the Rick.

Swapped the Rick out for the Alembic.

@MeshodMan & Beepz: FYI my Alembic is a stereo out bass too.

If I get The Rick the only actual other bass I "need" is an Eb3 and then I'll have all my "once owned bazzez" at my disposal.

Now you can bolt the Alembic and the Rick together like Vai's double necked heart guit.

and thus the AlembRick was born!

note to the reader: beepster does not recommend or endorse bolting multiple instruments together... because that's stoopid

i just wanted to type "AlembRick"... because i'm stoopid

What color Ed, if there is a photo, it's not showing up on my iPhone. Luv my Jetglo 4300, wouldn't trade it for any other Bass. She gets played live once a week and I get nothing but compliments on the tone. Some day I would like to add a 4300s to my collection of guitars, the one with the dot inlays and no body binding.

I had a Fire Glo 330 electric back in the 70's....miss that git as well.

Well, it started out as a Fire Glo, I believe, before the previous owner decided to do a custom paint job on it.

I left my hand rest on for a couple of years, when I first got it.  It didn't bother me at first.  It does kind of force you to play closer to the neck, which gives you a little deeper/ mellower tone.  Eventually, I took it off.  I find myself bracing my palm more so on the bridge now.  I actually like the tone better from that position, you get more of that traditional Rick growl.  It also makes it easier to do a little palm muting if necessary.

Flat wounds bring a whole new joy of tone.  Think McCartney.  Thomastik Infeld strings are very slinky in tension, but awesome in tone.  Rotosound Flats have so much tension they feel stiff.

I have always really liked the low action on the Rick; its fast an precise.  Not a good slapping Bass, but that has never been my style anyway.  I also find that the Bass covers a lot of tones, more than most people give it credit for.  It is not the "trebbly" bass that people think of when they hear Chris Squire tones.  It stays in tune, incredibly well.  I could show up for a gig and never check tuning and be fairly confident that it is dead on tuned.

I am always noticed, because of the way it looks.  They do cost a lot, I guess, though you can find Fenders in the same price range.  It hold its value and has actually increased in value, since I have owned it.

I've never been a flat wound guy. I put them on the Spacey 5-String but I had to swap out to a round wound on the low B.

I've tried them a couple of times, enough to know that I prefer rounds.  I like the tone of rounds better.  Flats do bring an interesting change up of tone.  If I had two Rick's, I would probably leave flats on one and rounds on the other.
