I'm more concerned about it's upgrade path with USB 3.0 coming out and I am wondering if the boys at Cake will be upgrading these units to use 3.0. If Eventide can upgrade their hardware then why can't our guys?

About the Fantom

Firstly, I didn't think I would use the Fantom too much either, but I find myself reaching into its huge library for sounds on every project now.  It is a hell of a device.  I was going to buy a keyboard after buying the Studio 700, but now I don't need to.

As for the 64 bit VST issue, I used the workaround they are providing from tech support.  It worked for a while then I started getting some issues.  I find that pulling up one Fantom audio track and then slapping in mini tracks is easier, especially with instrument definitions.

I have both 32 and 64 bit installed (they can work independently of each other and you can pull up projects on both) and the 32 Bit is smooth sailing.  The 64 bit has its shortfalls.  Bitbridge renders X-Ray useless, and the Fantom issues are a pain.  I have super fast ram (1600Mghz) so I'm not having any issues.  Plus, because I find myself using the fantom so much, I'm hardly using 25% of my system resources even on the   thickest projects.  That's with latency set to its minimum.

I've had the V Studio 700 for 6 weeks now, and I couldn't be happier.  Tech support responds to phone calls within 15 min (usually 3).  The Fantom is beast.  The Control surface is AWESOME.  The quality of the 700r is amazing.  A world of a difference compared to my 003 console that I sold to get this thing.

Don't be scared my man, DIVE RIGHT IN and I swear you won't regret it.  Haven't read a single negative thing about this piece of gear.

The same thing happened with me and the Fantom. Wasn't sure about it at first, but now I love it.

I was going to buy a keyboard after buying the Studio 700, but now I don't need to.

A keyboard Midi controller is a great addition to the VS700 and the Fantom. If you get a keyboard with Synth capabilities and the ability to send Midi data on more than one channel as in backing tracks, main voice on ch 1, lead-live input on ch 4, bass on ch 2, strings on ch 9, drums on ch 10. You can drive the Fantom with a backing track while playing the lead. With the ability to drive multiple voices from each channel, you can create complex textures and basically record a whole peice in Midi data in perfect sync.
Adding a percussion pad on ch 10 will also give you live input drums.

ya i know... you missed me... lol just thought I'd drop one...

i bought the 700 system because i liked the look of a larger console. i know this sounds like a "Jones"  thing to say but it's kind of embarrassing to say... " look at my studio"  and all that's sitting there is a tiny little io box and a laptop... i guess I'm old but that's not a studio that's your computer.  that and i'm used to consoles... the bigger the better i say.  one nob for one job... to me it's way less confusing.  all that layered crap drives me insane.  i think maybe that's what Roland had in mind when designing the thing... make it look more like a professional studio than your sister's laptop.  if your that worried about having  too large of a console... well i say... "it's just not Cristian"  lol.  i wish the thing had 48 faders with a fully functioning eq section on each channel and a full meter bridge on top.  good god man... it's really the knobs, dials, leds, and all that other cool crap that you should be demanding... not... i'd like to  pay a massive amount of money for some gay little gadget(i-phone) that will fit in my pocket...  i choose to have my daw replace the reel to reels,  not my recording experience.  truthfully... the 700c pretty much just sits there looking cool anyways.  i still spend most of my time on the real console with the transport.  as for the edits(very few of them), it's easier to point and click.

i know you missed me didn't you

sorry one comment about the vstudio....  i think some one else mentioned it... yah... get rid of the phantom... it's gay!  i don't care if you lower the price.

I don't know about it being 'gay'..., but the Fantom is easily the most disappointing feature in the V-Studio 700 package. It was also the one thing that made me decide to go with the V-Studio 700 system instead of something else.

The included 'editor' software is pretty much completely disconnected from SONAR and the control surface, yet it presents itself as any other VSTI. 'Editor' software alone is fine if you're using a device that also has its own display like ...ohh, I don't know... a REAL Fantom. However, when the software is the ONLY interface into the Fantom chip, then it should at least be able to do simple synth-like things like allow you to step thru patches sequentially or update itself when it receives a program change. Synths have been doing these basic tasks since MIDI was invented over 25 years.

What's also disappointing is that its still essentially a 1.0 release (for over two years now) and no one from Cakewalk/Roland has given any indication that it will ever be improved or at least made into something that's actually usable in a pro environment.

What really ticks me off is that the Fantom actually SOUNDS great, its just such a pain-in-the-ass to use that I rarely have the patience to mess with it for more than a few minutes at a time. I bought a control surface so I wouldn't need to be tied to the mouse and they ruin it by including a awesome-sounding synth that REQUIRES 3-4 mouse clicks/moves just to change patches.

Instead of them 'getting rid' of the Fantom, they need to at least make it usable first.

Smoochy, where ya been dude? You know a hardware synth has no sex. It depends on the player and his choice of voices and playing style to supply the sex element. Hmmm.

Can you view the patch's via the console or is a mouse is needed to click through them? or as long as the first patch is loaded you can view scroll through via the console.<--- thats what I would think..
Also Any new's about usb 3.0 and the V-studio.. Is Cakewalk even working on upgrading the console to meet its needs, or will it be forgotten. I know that sales on them have not been that great. To me they seem they were targeting new users , as an all in one solution, to recording and mixing. What new user buys and all in one solution. Bundling the software is rip off, considering the software costs $500 new and they give back a lousy couple hundred dollar rebate. And they Bundled it with a synth No one really wanted, but after owning it and it being your synth , of course your gonna start to like it , but its not on wish list to be combined with a console and an Audio Device. Really did they think this out or is Roland Calling the shots.. I hope they redo the console and fit it with usb 3.0 and get rid of the proprietary cable that is impossible to get or get a quote on . Im still waiting for my email about it.

You know, I haven't gone through the console controls yet when the Fantom is the topmost window. So, I don't know if the patch change thing is possible from the console. Right now I'm dealing with life and strife but as soon as I'm clear I'll look into it. I'm still working on organizing the complex set of voices I've selected. The Fantom Synth is an amazing Synthesizer. If you've studied all the pages involved in the construction of just one voice in the Fantom, you'll soon see that the Fantom can teach you much about the subject. All the negative hype about the Fantom Synth is pure B*llsh*t. The amount of sound structuring possible in the Fantoms pages is amazing. I have hit the 128 voice limit on several ocassions. In my attempts to see what is possible. I wish I had some finished examples to make public but they're not complete yet due to my own limitations. I know everyone is afraid of the price and they are reluctant to purchase because they haven't been able to test-play with the unit. Well all I can tell you "big boys" is if you can use the Fantom to it's full ability, I'll kiss your A**.

If the MOTU provided a stand-alone mode. I'm very lucky to know that it is possible. I really appreciate it.

 Thanks Craig.

CONCLUSION Despite my [ hopefully-objective-and sincerely-good-willed-critical-comments ] I am still having trouble dismissing it as my "ultimate-long-term" DAW controll

Well, the headphone and main controls being dependent on the V700R is only partially true because you can configure those buttons I beleive to control Sonars controls for such. But why would you need them when you already have faders for everything on the V700C? Admitedly, they are a conveinance when used with the V700R, along with the AUX input.
Perhaps it's just a money thing for you at this point but the V700R is a great interface and well worth the money in my humble opinion.
