Although more expensive (as it requires a UAD card), I use the Precision Limiter from Universal Audio on my master buss when exporting a mix (or master) for review.   Very clean.

Geo525:

Thanks for sharing these plug ins. They have some very impressive testimonials, especially for freebies!

You're welcome Thomasabarnes. In my own comparisons and for the music I do they stand right up to some of my waves plugins. Kajaerhus Audio "free classic plugins" are also pretty good. Nothing earth shattering but definitely usable.

Why not try Cakewalk's PX-64 Percussion Strip as a "limiter"?

Use those settings (both saturations on, and turned all the way down; compressor on and threshold all the way up, 4:1 ratio), and overdrive the input. Also play around with the compressor ratio.  Turn down the output to avoid any final overs, or follow it by Boost 11--in this case, Boost 11 won't be doing much so it won't do any damage.

This is a very interesting "character" limiter.

I find the Pro Channel useless for limiting as well, have used sonitus comp a few times, shame you cant control the 0.1 limit on it though, I like mine around 0.5 brickwall.

GClip will do the job for now:-)

You can control the limit in the Sonitus compressor/limiter to any level - the THRESHOLD slider.

Stillwell event horizon is pleasantly dirty.
George Yhong's W1 is nice and transparent.
Sonitus compressor - 0 attack/inf ratio/gain as required.

Why would you want attack controls on a limiter? If it ain't instant it's pretty pointless..

I found the perfect combination, as suggested by some use the sonitus compressor then if I add boost 11 to adjust the out limit. Since sonitus is already limiting the output to 0.1 its never going to push boost 11 enough to muddy the sound, then leave boost 11 volume boost at 0. Attack & release don't seem to mater in sonitus since it not compressing in this instance.

Just copy the settings shown in the screenshots, Sonitus comp first then boost 11. Just change the gain output in sonitus to your own needs as with output in boost 11.

Something doesn't look right in your screen shots.
The Sonitus ratio is only set to 1:1, which does not limit anything. For limiting that should be set to inf:1 (infinity : 1)

However, I'm not sure if this is automatically done once you turn on the "limiter" button near the bottom right. Maybe once that is engaged the ratio is auto set, and as you suggested, the attack and release become non functioning as well.

EDIT: A quick look through the Sonitus manual confirmed that your approach is correct. If the limiter button is activated, the output level becomes fixed, and the sound will never exceed that level. The other controls actually remain active, as you can still run it as a compressor prior to the limiter feature.

Sorry I doubted your approach
I'll have to give this a try myself.

Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take!

The fact remains that Boost 11 should do the job on its own, but its no good for "boosting" as it really does muddy the sound, above solution works for me, but would still like CW to have a look at Boost 11 at some point to at least give us some control over it.
