Wichita Lineman (Glen Campbell Cover) Updated Mix 3/4/15
Cover of the Jimmy Webb song, Wichita Lineman, as recorded by Glen Campbell in 1968. Was watching a Glen Campbell documentary and his struggle with Alzheimer's and was inspired to record a cover version. Guitars and Bass are played by me, the rest is MIDI. NI Kontakt Strings, Session Horns and Superior Drummer. This is the first project I have done with my new UAD gear. The guitar and bass are recorded through the NEVE 1073 UAD Plugs and Vintage Amp plugs and the guitar solo is also going through the NEVE 1073 plug via Line6 HD500. Geno P (guitartrek) is providing the vocals on this track. He did a really good job... Hope you enjoy it. As always, comments welcome. Updated Version 3/4/15 http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=13066645&q=hi&newref=1 Original Mix http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=13042228&q=hi Regards

It sounded a bit midi and stiff as it started but once you got into it I REALLY enjoyed it. First of all, a great, great song. It was popular when I got out of the army and that was a wild time for me. Took me 20 years to recover. I have always liked Geno's music and vocals. Very nice job on this classic tune. Mark, thanks for a wonderful trip down memory lane. Your musical interpretation was great. Glen lives here and has been colorful to say the least. I saw him with Andy Williams in Branson about 18 years ago. Two old fogies who tore it up. It was a massively great show. I wouldn't have gone but my friend got tickets. Bless him for that.

Nice work. Glen is one of my wife's main rotation CD's in her car. Glen was quite the guitar player as well...... if you've ever seen that cat pick.... when he can tear it up.... vastly underrated. As Warren said, we went to Branson a few years back and went to another old timer who had a career back in the day...Jim Stafford..... another really talented guy who performed a super show to a mostly empty theater. We got 2nd row seats the morning of the show if that tells you anything.

IMO, one of the finest pop songs ever written. Excellent version, 10/10 from me. Vocals are beautifully sung and produced, and the backing is exemplary.

Mark did a great job on this - very nice orchestration and fabulous guitar work. The guitar tones both electric and acoustic sit beautifully in the mix. Mark sent me the backing tracks and I immediately wanted to sing it. It was one of my favorite songs back then. Thank Warren. Herb - Cool your wife still listens regularly. Yes Glen is a fantastic guitar player. A natural shredder back when shredders were far and few between. A young studio guitarist of the 60's, recorded with Sinatra, the Monkeys, the BeeGees, etc. You're right - vastly underrated as a guitarist. I don't think most people really know how good he is.

A young studio guitarist of the 60's, recorded with Sinatra, the Monkeys, the BeeGees, etc. and the guitarist for Phil Spector's wall of sound. Nice job on the cover fellas. and Gino you ought to bump your rendition of 'Eleanor Rigby' you did a few years back. Still one of the best productions I've heard on this forum. :)

A long time ago (late 70's I think) he came to Canberra in Australia and did a great show there. They played an intro to this for 15 minutes before he came in with the vocals. It was the most incredible thing to hear and all live of course. You were in tears before he sang the first line. I will never forget that feeling in that second. Needless to say they did a very extended version. Really took it out.

I love that I can hear reworkings of seminal songs here! Pretty unexpected, and very cool. I think anyone would be hard pressed to recreate a classic like this with such accuracy (apart from some nice vocal noodling at the end) - it's just like putting a nickel in the jukebox. And I mean a nickel, NOT a quarter! However, the one thing I don't think was in the original - seems like an added alien cricket synth patch, pitched way up high, panning left and right - supposed to add shimmer, which it does, but I would vote to cut its volume in half. Things like that are subliminal ear candy at best and should not be the center of attention in such a fine song as this. Just a thought . . . Holy crap, great job. Let's have a "rework a classic" competition - you would win. -Tom

You nailed it perfectly. This was one of my favorites way back when. Glen Campbell was one of the few artists that stood out back then who had real talent. Such a shame he's struggling with Alzheimer's disease. Thanks for sharing a tribute to one of the best.

Sorry I have been a bit delinquent in responding. Our company started a physical move last week, over this past weekend, and just wrapping up loose ends today. Moving sucks. Warren - Thx for the listen, I bet that was a fantastic show, Andy Williams and Glen Campbell. Would have been a shame to miss it as those old fogies aren't around forever. I do like to mx it up, Van Halen and Genesis, to Glen Campbell;) Keeps things interesting. Herb - Thanks for the comment, yes Glen was quite the player. Not sure if you have heard about the Wrecking Crew Documentary. http://www.wreckingcrewfilm.com/wheretobuy.php Seems like they have had a lot of issues releasing it but it looks like a really interesting inside look at some of the most memorable recordings. Outlines the members of the studio group that played on many of the hits from that era including Tommy Tedesco, Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye, etc...... Glen was definitely a big part of that sound with the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, al... James - Thanks, I have to agree with you, as many will, that Wichita Lineman is one of the finest songs ever written. It was a lot of fun recording. Really starting to enjoy playing the bass, picked one up a few months back and also purchased Carol Kaye's bass tutorials on Amazon to get it together.... Much different after playing guitar for so long...Glad you liked it... Regards

Excellent cover. Solid production and crystal clear vocals which I would turn up half a dB more. A song often destroyed by Karaoki but your version Glen himself would be impressed with. Good job.

What a great sounding, authentic cover! The atmosphere is perfect. Great vocal, guitars and the strings sound very good and match the feel of the era very well. The only nit I have is that the drums don't feel real. They are lacking some dynamics that a real player would add. Otherwise, great job! Regards, Dan

Emeraldsoul/Tom - Thanks for the listen. Not sure about the cricket sound, I have a pad in there but I really can't hear it that well, I think as we advance in age there are certain frequencies that are not as audible. Will have to re-listen for it. Never really thought about a competition, to me competition is always against my own previous postings I have done to improve the quality of mixes, playing, etc....The forum is quite invaluable for improvement for those willing to take the criticisms with the compliments and implement good suggestions from other member (like fixing a cricket sound). I do appreciate your compliment though:) Mark - Thank You, that is a great compliment considering your own incredible guitar and production skills. Much appreciated. LoranP - Thanks for stopping by for a listen and comment. I think Glen is one of the few artists that had mass cross-over appeal with pop and country fans. In an interview he said he never really considered himself to be a country artist. I guess if you look at his history he really did it all from Jazz, Rock, Pop to Country...and all he did very well. Great talent. Bat - Thanks, I remember your cover of Highway Star, that was a great rendition.... GaryBrun - Thanks. No doubt Geno could sing it with a live band. I gave up the live band thing many years ago (about 25) Much prefer recording and dabbling at home to the live scene. Regards

Walt - Appreciate the listen. Mahavishnu - Thanks for the comment, I may boost the vox up a little as the background builds in volume. I think the intro is OK but can hear where a slight boost later on may improve the clarity when the strings start popping through. Tom - Thanks, yes I can imagine this was a big hit in Wichita. I think the song was originally called Wa****a Lineman (Wa****a County, OK) but Glenn felt that Wichita "sang better." than Wa****a. Funny stuff. Dan - Appreciate the comment. Sorry you aren't a fan of the drums, I tried to keep them pretty mellow and may have compressed some of the dynamics out of them to get them to work... Lynn - Thanks, appreciate it. I did try to keep the original instrumentation, while making it a little more modern sounding. Glad you noticed. Geno's vocals also gave it a much more contemporary sound. Appreciate the challenge but I doubt I could top Glen's MacArthur Park performance on the guitar, check this out. He really hits this hard starting around 5:04. What an incredible talent.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZINUEmXGWhI Regards

BEAUTIFUL job on this tune! Absolutely an epic song originally, you guys have done a fantastic job with it. Last night,m on the Oscars, they had one of the country singers sing the very last song that Glenn Cambell wrote - and it was about his having Alzheimer's disease and that he would be soon forgetting his wife and kids, but that they would be in the very last thoughts he would be able to remember. Brought tears to my eyes. That guy was HUGE. Thank you for such a fine job on a great tune. Bob Bone
