Will there be an X1d ? ...... or is it full steam on to X1.1 / X2 ?

Hi all

More curious than anything.

X1C seems pretty good so far but was wondering, is this it for the X1 " branch "  or  will we be getting another  [ free ]  update ala  X1d  ?

My guess would be X2. There seems to be a cycle of about 3 updates per major release then another major. So let the X2 requests start streaming in! X1c is very stable on my system.

X1C has rendered my DAW useless. I hope there's an X1D that fixes that.

The only thing I'm curious about is if there will be quickfixes between now and the next big update. From what I gather around the forums, people don't think there will be.

My hunch from reading between the lines in the marketing blurb is there won't be a X2.

Of course there will be paid updates but I think it will remain being called X1 with a letter signifying the version.

However I have been wrong before - just ask my wife.

X1 "officially" broke the sound barrier.

    X2 didn't end well.

I think from Cakewalk rep's comments that Cakewalk are not going to follow their previous release or update model.

I think the shelf life for a version will be longer with more updates especially considering the probs with X1 and we may well have to pay for an update mid cycle in a similar fashion to SONAR 8, 8.5 then X1.

Perhaps we'll have a hotfix or 2 over the next 2 months and X1D around December 2011.
Then around March 2012 we'll get SONAR X1.5, a paid update at a lesser price than what we used to pay for a full upgrade. eg US$99 like from 8 to 8.5.

The next major release following this period will be SONAR X2 at which time the SONAR X code will be bedded in and a regular cycle for release can resume though not necessarily at annual intervals. In fact I would say that the Producer product will attract a premium  payment and targetted to the big pro studio user head to head with Pro Tools, and the other programs will be aimed at more specialised user groups who individually may not need the whole SONAR kit.

I think there'll be price breaks for pre-orders and Cakewalk will continue to promote the download model with a premium to be paid for disk sets and optional full printed manuals. I fully expect that SONAR will soon provide MIDI data exportable as XML files so that it can link to any score editor curretly on the market. This will quash any need for a major update to the score editor and allow Cakewalk to concentate on what it generally does well.

I'd say with the recent advertising for senior programmers we can look forward to updates for Dim Pro and Rapture as well as a suite of 64 bit plugins that can be purchased independent of SONAR for use in any VST compliant audio program. As well as this there'll be a high end suite of 64 bit plugins being exclusive Producer inclusions in line with the current Pro Channel. How's that for dreamiing out loud.

I remember what they said in the "Summer of sonar" promo. They said : "and more to come for x1 before the end of the year." So i believe it means the X1 development process is not yet achieved. Sounds like a x1d for me...

I would be happy if there was an X1D - AND if they even charged for it, ($100, etc?) - I would not mind - as long as they put everything in ONE File to upgrade from 8.5.3.  (Like an X2 would do).

I'm suggesting that in a few short years that a DAW will come in a very small box running a bank of small and fast CPUs and lots of SSD memory.

The software vendors will have price war-ed their soft products down to a point where hardware will be reinvented to serve as dedicated audio workstations just to justify price points that provide enough gross revenue after the margin.

I think it will be like running Radar on a iPhone with a tiny little hardware controller to make it seem real.

The zoom 24 track system is a harbinger of what is to come.

I'm predicting that soon the digital hardware will be running *name brand* software instead of "proprietary" software.

    best regards,
    mike

That hypothesis assumes that the revenues for DAW software makers are in decline. Which may be the case, but I know of no data that suggests it is, and haven't heard this suggested anywhere else.

There's a lot of money to make in the garage band market. And technology rolls downhill. I hav the latest MC6, and I can tell you it's more than a decent entry level DAW for the $50 or whatever it costs. You'd be surprised how much of the core SONAR technology is in their (in fact if anybody is looking for a lightweight SONAR to take on the road, check out MC6). That consumer-level portion of the market is not going to go out to buy specialized toasters. They'll either be looking at their existing desktops/laptops sitting on their desks, or the handheld platforms of the future (which will naturally be getting more powerful).

Avid have been in decline precisely because they've spent too long focussing on an outmoded hardware-based approach. I would bet a month's income that in the meetings where releasing pro tools for native was first discussed, a chart very like that one was waved around.

No idea what the first chart is supposed to show.

You have to account for market erosion due to all the new DAW software as well so that picture alone may not tell the health of the sector. If people are opting for free versus pay, which I think they are, then the future for any company trying to make a profit is threatened.

Is that a guess on your part or do you have access to some data. I didn't know that CW was publicly traded company.

Roland Corporation engages in the development, manufacture, and distribution of electronic musical instruments. Its products include digital pianos, synthesizers, stage keyboards, organs and harpsichords, accordions, drums, computer music systems, recorders, guitars, DJ/VJ club systems, amplifiers, accessories, headphones, commercial equipment, and audio-visual equipment. The company also offers media production software; and computer peripheral equipment, such as color printers and 3-D tools. It markets its products under the Boss, Rodgers, Cakewalk, and Roland brand names in Japan and internationally. Roland Corporation was founded in 1972 and is headquartered in Hamamatsu, Japan.

It's a bit doomed to failure, this tangent, I think. None of us have anything like enough data to draw meaningful conclusions here.
