I must say that Windows updates are the worst. I previously went into services.msc and disabled the Windows update service, however, Windows 10 now forces the updates.  I keep receiving messages that Windows 10 is performing an update, however, I receive a message that the update failed.   I refuse to fix the problem, so I will continue to get the messages and will live with it as long as I don't receive the Windows update.

Peace,

I don't know if this is related, but I recently went into Rapture Classic and found that the Program Browser is not showing anything anymore.

EDIT:  I had set up a link from C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Rapture to D:\Cakewalk Content\Rapture where my content was installed.  Somehow that link was messed up.

1709 also seems to be messing with my audio drivers. Each time I boot up now I have to disable/enable them and reboot to make them work.

I believe that drivers are going to become a bigger issue with the new rapid release model for Microsoft Windows.

Since drivers are usually only updated for supported hardware, you are out of luck if a Windows update changes something under the hood, if you are running older hardware.

Even if your hardware is fairly new, other than GPU drivers, updates are usually infrequent.  At least with supported hardware you can hope the vendor will push out fixes to play catch up with Microsoft.

This is gonna become a huge game of whack-a-mole!

If you use wi-fi you can set the connection as metered. That allows you to download manually. If you want to install an update you just check for updates and if one is available you can download it. I don't want data pushed to my PC if I'm tracking ...

Why do you need to be connected to the Internet when you’re tracking? Or doing anything in Sonar for that matter except transferring files which would be part of preparations which get done before tracking etc.

... so I can post problems I'm having with the internet here?...

I probably do waste a lot of time doing that.

Besides, who said I'm tracking at the moment?! Unless tracking is the same as "following".

Then again, "following" used to get you in big trouble.... or was that stalking?!

Setting your interface to metered did not stop update in my case.

Unbeknownst to me it installed 1709 and I was forced to install or never shutdown my computer again.
Not noticing any issues with any plugs or SPLAT after install.

Hopefully this is the last major update for Win 10 !

Not likely.  MS plans to keep rolling them out at regular intervals for the foreseeable future.

I am running Win 10 Pro on my desktop, and take advantage of the Group Policy Editor to prevent checking for updates.  So far, so good.

On my Windows 10 Home laptop, I use the MS 'wushowhide' [Show or Hide Updates] utility.  That tool checks the update pipeline and you can select any updates that are available, but not yet applied, and hide them.  The trick here is you have to find them before they get installed, and so far that 'metered' trick has bought me enough time to hide the major updates.

You could make a partition for your OS that isn’t large enough for an update. My laptop C Drive got pretty full because of a backup partition HP had added but with W10 I don’t need. It would never download an update until I deleted the backup partition. I dont know if it would be that straightforward but if you can somehow make Windows think space is low, it won’t update. I think it wants to make a backup before it does but I’m not sure. I just use the mouse pad and look at the screen but I did notice this stopped updates for almost a year.

Today I turned off Defender's Controlled Folder Access as it keeps blocking 1/2 a dozen processes everyday, that need to run, loading up my Notification window which I have to clear.

I have disabled Windows Defender.  There are better options, such as Avast Free, Avira Free, and Bitdefender Free.

Take your pick, all score well on the AV comparatives testing...

Avast used to be good, now it feels like Spyware.

I've always paid for antivirus myself after seeing free versions not block very effectively. I came to the conclusion you get what you pay for.

(I use bitdefender and malwarebytes).

Unless it causes me more issues I'll stick with free Defender. Years of paying for A/V are a welcome loss.

Years of playing with free A/V not detecting or not cleaning viruses aren't welcome imho. When you get something major your way you'll understand one day, I've seen so much mess with freebies on customers PC's over the years.. they thought they were protected but were not. Anyway you pays or don't pays ur money you takes yers choice. Your fault if something goes wrong in the end.
