and to not do a clean install the 1st time you install Windows 10.

Sorry not true..! :)

You can do a clean install from the DVD no problems. There is an option but it is well hidden. In some cases it's the only way if upgrades are failing. All that is required is that you run the DVD setup whilst windows is running, select clean install there. Do NOT boot from DVD.

Btw a clean install from the DVD isn't really a clean install. If you really want a full clean install you need to boot of the DVD and do it again, and do a partition format. But ONLY after you've installed Win10 at least once.

Hi Doktor:

I saw you post earlier about using an ISO and running it inside the qualifying OS and selecting the fresh install option.

I was posting the requirements I saw listed on a Microsoft site. And see the warning at the top of this site at the following link: http://answers.microsoft....481c-a02d-dadf465df326

WARNING: Do not use the Windows 10 ISO to format your PC. Upgrade first from an activated Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, ensure the Windows 10 installation is activated, then you can perform a clean install.

Using the method that the warning advises against is what a clean install is. Doing as you say about running the ISO in a qualifying OS and selecting the fresh install option is not a clean install. That is still an in place install. :) Doing the install that way, the installation ISO still sees it's being run from a qualifying OS. As you say, a clean install is booting from an ISO of Windows 10, selecting to format the drive Win 10 will be installed on, and installing to that formated drive.

Cya around dude.

So, if you still think what I said is not true, we'll just have to agree to disagree and carry on. :)

It's just a matter of semantics. :)

I believe the good Doktor is referring to the 'Keep Nothing' option from the Media Creation Tool. That option erases/moves all settings and files when performing the upgrade and stores them in the Windows.old folder in case a roll-back is desired. It is essentially a 'clean' installation without going through a traditional clean install booting from the disc.

Yep. As I say (once again) the ONLY requirement to generate a product key (stored in cloud) is to start the DVD within windows7/8. Just don't boot off the DVD and you will be fine.

The option 'keep nothing' (thanks DarinBad for the specific phrase) actually keeps a lot more than nothing, not only windows.old but other stuff. It's a clean install of windows but it isn't 100% clean.

Afterwards (after upgrade) you can format by booting off DVD.

I did one computer with get win 10 icon and one with the media creation tool.

Both were started from within Win 7. Both went flawlessly.

I have not done my DAW yet. Even though I expect it to be flawless; there is so much more to test and I want a totally free weekend to do that.

Yes, I used the Media Creation Tool to upgrade three computers. I kept files and settings on one to see how things would go. I did the other two using the 'Keep Nothing' option. I then did a traditional 'clean' install by booting from the disc, deleting the partitions on the drive and installing completely from scratch. You must skip entering a key for it to work properly (Windows will ask for a key several times). Windows should activate automatically after finishing the Set-up.

I stayed with a Local Account, rather than using my Microsoft Account. Everything went smoothly.

Edit:
Make certain that your upgraded Windows 10 is activated before performing a clean install.

The last several posts discusses this in detail. Looping. I definately recommended this way. I've updated a ton of PC's so far.. By far most reliable...

1st upgrade - Windows Insider Preview = success   Intel Q6600, Intel board - can't be upgraded
2nd upgrade - Media Creation Tool = success  HP craptop, 1.5 AMD mobile processor - can't be upgraded
3rd upgrade - Windows Update = fail  AMD FX6300, Gigabyte 970 board
Start Menu would not open right away.   I had internet but all broken browsers, even Edge.  Many utilities wouldn't  work.  Roll back was fine except it will add those locks on your icons and double check your shared folders as well. Sometimes it will change ownership to system.
